Champlain Area Trails seeks land conservation manager
This role will spearhead land protection efforts throughout New York's Champlain Valley, advancing CATS's mission to maintain trails to connect people with nature and ensure long-term access to outdoor recreation, all promoting economic vitality in New York's Champlain Valley.
'This role strengthens our commitment to protecting critical lands, building partnerships with private landowners, and creating lasting connections for future generations,' Arin Burdo, executive director of CATS, said. 'The land conservation manager will be pivotal in expanding our ability to preserve the natural beauty of our region.'
In addition to general land conservation initiatives, the land conservation manager will focus on implementing critical current projects, including:
— A New York State Smart Growth grant focused on converting temporary trail agreements into permanent trail easements, ensuring lasting public access to these natural spaces.
— The acquisition of the Twin Valleys Outdoor Education Center, which will expand public opportunities for outdoor education, community engagement and environmental stewardship.
'This new position allows us to take bold steps in advancing our conservation mission,' Burdo said. 'We're excited to grow our team and strengthen our efforts to protect and share the beautiful landscapes of the Champlain Valley with everyone.'
This new position, funded through a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will focus on major ongoing conservation projects, identify future opportunities and collaborate with local landowners, communities and conservation partners.
The land conservation manager will also play a role in securing grants and donations to support future projects.

The pet supply retailer on July 11 released a list of the top 25 cat-loving cities in the U.S. and North Canton is ranked No. 12. The rankings are based on PetSmart Charities cat adoptions and sales of cat pampering products bought at PetSmart stores, the company said. North Canton is the only Ohio city to make the list. "We're seeing a remarkable surge in cat enthusiasm, and our top cat-loving cities index reflects this trend," Matt Byrnes, senior vice president of merchandising, said in a prepared statement. Cats have been adopted at a higher rate than dogs in recent years, according to PetSmart. "We've been following this trend as cat adoptions outpace dog adoptions — and it's fair to say cats are having a moment," Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities, said in a prepared statement. "This index shows us that cat parenting is more universal than you might think, and those old stereotypes no longer apply. More people than ever are enjoying the playful nature of cat companionship. The American Veterinary Medical Association last year found that dogs were more commonly found in U.S. households than cats, with 59.8 million U.S. households owning dogs and 42.2 million households owning cats. There were 89.7 million total pet dogs in the U.S. that year and 73.8 million pet cats, according to the association. Cat owners were slightly more likely to have multiple cats, with an average of 1.8 cats per household, whereas dog owners had an average of 1.5 dogs per household. To commemorate its Charities National Adoption Week, which runs from July 21-27, PetSmart is offering new pet parents who adopt within the week a chance to claim "Very Important Pet Parent" status. "VIPP (Very Important Pet Parent) status (is) the highest tier and level of savings for PetSmart Treats Rewards loyalty members," the company said in a prepared statement. Renters in New York-Newark-Jersey City Metro saw apartment listing prices increase from May's average of $2,271, an analysis of new data from Apartment List shows. The average apartment listed for rent at $2,291 in June. Average listing prices in New York-Newark-Jersey City Metro are trending 0.9% upwards from May's $2,271 price, up 2% from this time last year. The data is inclusive of all bedroom sizes, from studios to three-bedroom units, so while it is a good indicator of how rents are moving in the area, it does not include single family homes for rent, said Chris Salviati, senior housing economist for Apartment List. One-bedroom apartments listed to rent at an average of $2,097, 0.9% higher than May, when they were $2,079. Since last year, one-bedroom rental prices rose 2% from $2,055. Two-bedroom apartments listed for rent were 0.9% higher than May at an average of $2,347, compared to $2,327. Since last year, two-bedroom rental prices rose 2% from $2,300. Statewide, New York rental listing prices are on the rise from May's average of $1,938, at $1,956. In New York, one-bedroom rentals were listed for an average of $1,861, 0.9% higher than May's average of $1,844. Two-bedroom rental listing prices are trending 1% higher than May's average of $1,950 at $1969. In New York-Newark-Jersey City Metro, the average apartment listed for rent is 17% above the state average. One-bedroom rentals were 13% above the state average, while two-bedrooms listed 19% above. Nationwide, apartment rental listing prices are essentially unchanged from last month's $1,398. One-bedroom rentals across the nation listed for an average of $1,231, nearly the same as last month, while two-bedroom rental listing prices approximately the same as last month's average of $1,384. In New York-Newark-Jersey City Metro, the average apartment listed for rent is 64% above the national average.
