Galway Races tips: English horse trained by an Irishman to win the Galway Hurdle

It's 15 years since the Guinness Galway Hurdle went for export - the third time in the illustrious race's history.
Overturn's success in 2010 was the first British win in the race, which has been running since 1913, since Sagaman's win in 1991 while Rushmoor in 1986 was the first foreign trained winner of the race.
Today at Ballybrit we fancy a horse from the UK to capture the big prize, although his trainer is very much born and bred in Ireland.
2.10 - Guinness Open Gate Brewery Novice Chase
Galway Hurdle day opens with a Novice Chase and the experienced PIED PIPER can maintain his unbeaten run over fences by making it four wins out of four.
A top class hurdler, who was second in the 2022 Triumph Hurdle and second and third in the 2023 and 2024 County Hurdle at Cheltenham, he's taken to chasing like a duck to water.
He started this summer run at Down Royal in April and has since won novice contests at Roscommon and Killarney and with a mark of 150 it's hard to see him beaten here.
Special Cadeau is interesting for the in-form partnership of Henry De Bromhead and Darragh O'Keeffe and has a life having finished runner-up to Nurburgring at Killarney on his last start.
TIP: PIED PIPER
Each-way: Special Cadeau
2.45 - Rockshore Refreshingly Irish Handicap
QUAR SHAMAR gets the vote for Ross O'Sullivan in a devilishly difficult 1m handicap.
The German bred was having his first run for that yard having been with Emmet Mullins and Jessica Harrington, when sixth at the Curragh on his most recent start.
He can be marked up a bit for that effort having not had a clear run and has dropped a long way in the handicap from a career high rating of 104 to just 81.
The Durkans had a good festival here 12 months ago and Bill Silvers could run well at a price with Chris Hayes booked to do the steering.
TIP: QUAR SHAMAR
Each-way: Bill Silvers
3.20 - Arthur Guinness Irish Corrib Stakes
UK-based trainer Ollie Sangster sends a rare runner west at a venue where his late grandfather Robert's colours were regular winners for Ballydoyle in the past.
His GLAMIS ROAD comes out of stall two and looks to have a massive chance of building on good runs at Carlisle and Epsom.
She's a lightly raced filly who won twice last season and the hustle and bustle of a race like this might just suit her as will coming off a strong pace.
Top weight Bellaphina has a chance of making the frame having finished third to the smart Sky Majesty in a Stakes race at Naas on her last start.
TIP: GLAMIS ROAD
Each-way: Bellaphina
3.55 - Guinness Nursery Handicap
We'll go for the old punting trick of backing the top weight in a Nursery here and select GAVOO to reverse recent Curragh form with Which Wolf Wins.
David Marnane's colt ran a little green on that occasion and should appreciate the extra furlong here too despite carrying 10st3lbs.
Gavin Cromwell's recent Down Royal third Invincible Will is one that might be capable of improvement on handicap debut.
TIP: GAVOO
Each-way: Invincible Will
4.30 - Guinness Galway Hurdle
The big race of the day, if not the week, and one where a huge gamble on the JP McManus-owned Puturhandstogether could have bookies running for cover.
We missed the boat there so instead our selection is the UK raider DYSART ENOS, who can give Fergal O'Brien a massive winner on his first visit to Galway.
The mare has lots of experience in these types of races having placed in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham last year. She was a very smart bumper horse and beat Champion Hurdle heroine Golden Ace by nine lengths in an Aintree contest back in 2023.
She warmed up for this with a spin on the all-weather at Kempton and looks a value bet to become the first British-trained winner since Overturn in 2010.
Tipperary native O'Brien's only previous winner in Ireland came in 2014 when the Conor Shoemark-ridden Me And Ben struck at Listowel's harvest festival.
There are a host of horses with chances, but last year's runner-up Ndaawi must surely come into consideration having not been seen since chasing home Kargese in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.
TIP: DYSART ENOS
Each-way: Ndaawi
5.05 - Guinness Novice Hurdle
CAMELETTA VEGA is a daughter of six-time Cheltenham winner Quevega and dual Derby winner Camelot and can back up her Cork success in this 2m4f contest.
She struggled in bumpers but this type of distance looks more to her liking with her pedigree and it wouldn't be a shock to see her progress into a real nice staying hurdler next season.
The mare she beat, Emily Love, ran well here earlier in the week and she's a confident choice
TIP: CAMELETTA VEGA
Each-way: Ndaawi
5.40 - Guinness 0.0 Handicap
Joseph O'Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle are in sensational form at present with the Donegal born rider mounting a serious title challenge with Colin Keane now based in England for a lot of the time.
They can win this with GLENROYAL, who should improve for a step up to 1m4f, having made the frame on his last two starts over 1m1f at Ballinrobe and Tipperary.
TIP: GLENROYAL
Each-way: Astelia Dylan Browne McMonagle (centre) with Joseph O'Brien: will make his Derby debut (Image: PA)
6.10 - Guinness Time INH Flat Race
A bumper to finish a marathon eight-race card and one where Willie and Patrick Mullins can send punters home happy with WARTIME LEADER.
Second to Shuttle Diplomacy on debut in January 2024 for trainer Pat Doyle, that form has worked out well with Tom Cooper's charge finishing third in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham.
He hasn't been seen since but now calls Closutton home and there'll surely be improvement to come from the son of Churchill.
TIP: WARTIME LEADER
Each-way: Ring Of Kerry

Roscommon GAA club ‘shocked and heartbroken' at the loss of Don Connellan

Kilmore GAA have paid a lengthy and heartfelt tribute to Mr Connellan following his passing at the age of 51. Mr Connellan was a standout player for Roscommon throughout the 1900s and featured in their 2001 Connacht final victory over Mayo. He played primarily at midfielder or in the half-forward line and featured in three senior county finals (1998, 1999 and 2001) for Kilmore GAA. After he finished playing, he moved into management with Moycullen GAA in County Galway. After six seasons in charge of their senior team, he stood back from his position in 2023 due to health difficulties after leading them to two senior county titles and an All-Ireland club semi-final in 2022. He had been suffering with illness when he passed away earlier this week. In a statement, Kilmore GAA said: 'Our club and our community are shocked and heartbroken at the devastating news of the sudden passing of our great friend and true Kilmore legend, Don Connellan. 'No words can truly do justice to what Don meant to Kilmore GAA. He represented our club with distinction over many years — as a player, coach, and manager — showing immense pride, honesty, integrity, and leadership both on and off the pitch. Don was a key player for us on countless occasions and played a vital role in the senior team that reached three County Senior Finals in 1998, 1999, and 2001, narrowly missing out on claiming the Senior championship title.' As well as representing Roscommon at all age grades, Mr Connellan represented Connacht in the Railway Cup and won a Sigerson Cup medal with UCG in 1992. He was part of NUI Galway's All-Ireland winning Sigerson Cup team in 2022. 'Away from the GAA, Don was an exceptional person — a loyal friend to so many and someone who lived his life with the utmost integrity,' continued Kilmore GAA. 'His passing leaves a void that we, as friends and a community, will struggle to come to terms with in the days, months, and years ahead. 'But perhaps Don's greatest quality was the love he had for his family and home. From his childhood in Clooncoose to his life in Moycullen, home and family meant everything to him. Nothing brought him more joy than his regular visits back to Kilmore to see his parents — his late father Donal and his mother Nellie — his brothers Adrian and David, the wider Connellan family, and his many friends in Kilmore. 'Don loved Kilmore, and Kilmore loved Don.' The club paid tribute to his contribution to Moycullen GAA, where he lived with his wife Linda and sons Eoin and Conor for the past two decades. 'As a club and community, we are devastated by Don's loss. But our grief is nothing compared to the unimaginable pain that Linda, Eoin, Conor, Nellie, Adrian, David, and the extended Clancy and Connellan families are feeling. We extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to you all,' added Kilmore GAA 'In the days, weeks, and months ahead, we will do everything we can to bring some comfort and light during this dark time. 'Don, you will be deeply missed by all of us who were lucky enough to know you. 'Rest easy, Don - you were one of the best.' Moycullen GAA have also paid tribute to Mr Connellan, who was a member of An Garda Síochána. His funeral details have yet to be announced.

F1 team take action against broadcaster as pundit declares 'they don't like us'

Aston Martin have reportedly decided to refrain from giving interviews to Sky Germany due to what they perceive as recent negative coverage of the team, according to Express Sport. This comes in the wake of alleged biased reporting from the broadcaster. As per a report from German newspaper BILD, Aston Martin declined Sky Germany's request to interview their chief trackside officer, Mike Krack, ahead of the Hungarian GP. Team owner Lawrence Stroll also turned down an opportunity for a live on-air chat. Ralf Schumacher explained the situation to viewers, stating: "I know they're not giving us any more interviews because they don't like us that much at the moment." Co-pundit Peter Hardenacke provided further insight, admitting: "We were a bit too critical of the people at Aston Martin,". Express Sport has learned that Aston Martin have restricted the broadcaster's access to drivers and team personnel for the time being, pending more balanced reporting. Discussions between the two parties are ongoing with the aim of resolving the matter, reports the Express. Despite the lack of exclusive interviews, Sky Germany will still be able to interact with Aston Martin team members during the open media sessions held on Thursdays in the paddock. Schumacher made harsh comments about Lance Stroll after the British GP (Image: Getty) Aston Martin has responded following harsh remarks from Schumacher about driver Lance Stroll after the British Grand Prix. "It's the worst piece of s**t I've ever driven in my life, to be honest," the Canadian told race engineer Gary Gannon. "But it's okay. Seventh." Sky Germany pundit Schumacher was quick to criticise these comments. "I have to say, this statement is very disappointing, and quite honestly, it's a question of manners," he said on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast. "You have to consider the external impact. The mechanics who work tirelessly so that the two can race - and then the boss's son comes along and says: 'Wonderful, and with such a crappy car.' I have to say, that's completely unacceptable, that's an absolute no-go "I would hope that at the next race, he goes and apologises. It's just a shame, unspeakable, and it indicates a poor upbringing. "I don't know what film he thinks he's starring in, but such statements diminish his own results. "These are important points, after all. One mustn't forget: These are also significant bonuses for the mechanics and the like. And when someone then ruins it like that - quite honestly, you have to say: Grade F, dear Lance - and apologise to the team.".

Former Roscommon footballer Don Connellan dies aged 51

Roscommon GAA has paid tribute to former player Don Connellan, who has died at the age of 51. Connellan represented Roscommon at minor, under-21 and senior level. He was a key member of the Connacht SFC winning side in 2001, coming off the bench to feature in the 2-10 to 1-12 provincial final win over Mayo at Dr Hyde Park. He also won three county titles with his home club of Kilmore (1998, 1999, 2001) before moving to Galway , where he managed Moycullen to senior success in 2020 and 2022. 'An overwhelming sense of sorrow and sadness has fallen upon our county and on my own club Kilmore, since the news of Don's passing on Monday,' said Roscommon chairman Brian Carroll. READ MORE 'There are no words that can truly capture what Don meant to Kilmore GAA Club. Don loved Kilmore, and Kilmore loved Don. He was a mighty footballer – a joy to watch on the pitch – and his leadership and class were evident throughout his many years playing for Kilmore. 'Don also showed his immense talent, ability & leadership while representing Roscommon at all levels, making 73 appearances for the Roscommon senior team and scoring 3-38. He also had the honour of representing Roscommon on the Connacht Railway Cup team. 'Off the pitch, Don was equally exceptional – a top-class gentleman and a true friend to so many. I had the pleasure of visiting Don at his home in Moycullen last Wednesday, just days before his sudden passing. Looking back, I feel incredibly fortunate to have had that time with him. It's a memory I will always hold close. 'On behalf of Roscommon GAA, I extend my deepest sympathy to Don's wife, Linda; his sons, Eoin and Conor; his mother, Nellie; his brothers, Adrian and David; the extended Clancy and Connellan families; and all of Don's many friends. 'No words can truly console you at this terrible time. Don's absence will be felt deeply in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to have known him.'
