Fashion giant H&M plans to use AI clones of its models. Not everyone is happy
Fashion giant H&M plans to create digital clones of its models this year, raising more questions for an industry grappling with both the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on workers.
H&M, one of the world's largest clothing retailers, told CNN it plans to create 30 'digital twins' of its models this year, though it is still 'exploring' how these avatars will be used. It added that it is working with others in the industry, like agencies and the models themselves, to carry out this initiative in 'a responsible way.'
The models would own the rights to their digital twin, 'potentially work for any brand and get paid on each occasion just like on any campaign production,' the company said.
While this pledge to pay models for their likeness was welcomed by Paul W. Fleming, general secretary for the UK's performing arts and entertainment trade union Equity, he told CNN in a statement that it must be 'backed up by the widespread adoption of AI protections in union agreements and legislation that protects workers' right,' of which he said few exist.
'The race to 'innovate' in the area of artificial intelligence must also not be a race to the bottom to increase profits,' he added. 'Artificial intelligence would not be possible without human artistry and labour, and humans should remain at the centre of creative endeavours.'
H&M's announcement has already sparked some backlash within the fashion industry, where the careers of many workers are already precarious.
Sara Ziff, a model turned labor activist who founded the New York-based non-profit organization Model Alliance, said she had 'serious concerns about the use of digital replicas without meaningful protections in place.'
'In an industry that has historically been a backwater for workers' rights, H&M's new initiative raises critical questions about consent and compensation, and has the potential to replace a host of fashion workers—including make-up artists, hair stylists, and other creative artists in our community,' Ziff said in a statement released by the Model Alliance.
H&M is not the first brand to explore using these technologies. Jeans-maker Levi Strauss & Co. announced in March 2023 that it would use AI-generated models to 'supplement human models.' It later clarified that 'we are not scaling back our plans for live photo shoots,' after intense criticism.
In July last year, Spanish brand Mango launched a campaign generated entirely by AI to promote a new collection of its youth range.
Meanwhile, influencers and models created by AI are becoming increasingly common; there was even the world's first-ever AI beauty pageant last year.

Kyle MacLachlan 'Would Love' To Reprise Trey On ‘And Just Like That' After Rejecting Writers' 'First Idea'
Three seasons into And Just Like That…, one beloved Sex and the City character has yet to make a return, despite the show's best efforts. Kyle MacLachlan recently admitted he 'would love to come back and have fun' on the HBO Max reboot as Charlotte's (Kristin Davis) Waspy ex-husband Trey MacDougal, but he wasn't sold on the writers' original idea for his return. More from Deadline Kristin Davis Reveals Scrapped 'And Just Like That…' Storyline Where Kyle MacLachlan's Trey And Charlotte Run Into Each Other 'And Just Like That …' Season 3: Everything We Know So Far 'The Comeback' Revived By HBO For Third & Final Season 'And what they suggested to me, I said, 'I think there should be more,'' MacLachlan explained to Us Weekly. 'So I just said, 'I wonder, if the relationship that Charlotte and Trey had demands a little more than their first idea.'' Debuting the character on Season 3 of Sex and the City in 2000, Trey is a cardiologist who is seemingly Charlotte's perfect match, quickly getting married and starting their life together on the Upper East Side. But their marriage soon starts to unravel due to Trey's erectile dysfunction, his overbearing mother's surprise pop-ins and Charlotte's infidelity. As for what Trey would be up to during And Just Like That…, which premiered in 2021, MacLachlan has some ideas. 'It'd be very interesting,' he said. 'I had suggested that Trey has maybe moved to Napa and has a very successful winery and label there — you can see where I'm going with this. But no, I actually haven't said anything yet. Regardless, the show's doing great. They're all lovely. And I adore them.' Davis previously admitted on her Are You a Charlotte? podcast that she 'was kind of mad' at MacLachlan for passing on the writers' idea, which she felt symbolized Charlotte's 'unfinished feeling' about their divorce. 'She really wants to see him, and I, Kristin, also feel that way,' she added. 'So I'm hoping that we can kind of revisit a 'maybe they run into each other just at an event or a restaurant or something like that.'' Davis said, 'I did give him a hard time the other day, and then he explained his point of view and I did understand it. When you have played such a wonderful part in the past that people have such a great memory of, and it was so special as a work experience, you want it to kind of stay in this glorious place, and I think he just didn't want there to be kind of a sad note to the end. So I get that.' Best of Deadline 2025 TV Cancellations: Photo Gallery 2025 TV Series Renewals: Photo Gallery 2025-26 Awards Season Calendar: Dates For Tonys, Emmys, Oscars & More

‘The Gilded Age' Creator Stresses 'The Luck Element' Of Marriage As Gladys Russell's Prospects Pick Up With Episode 2 Of Season 3
The Gilded Age. The second episode of The Gilded Age Season 3, titled 'What the Papers Say,' dives deeper into the somewhat concepts of arranged marriage after introducing divorce in the first episode. More from Deadline 'The Gilded Age' Cast Throughout The Seasons Of The Period Drama 'The Gilded Age' Season 3 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Come Out? 'The Gilded Age' Hits Premiere High Viewership With Season 3 Return On HBO Those who tuned in for the Season 3 premiere last weekend will remember that Taissa Farmiga's Gladys Russell ran away from home in the middle of the night as a rebellious response to her mother Bertha's rumored arranging for The Duke of Buckingham to come back to their mansion. It turns out she ran away to the home of her latest suitor Billy Carlton (Matt Walker) and his mother Joan (Victoria Clark). 'For every generation, marriage is a crapshoot. Nowadays, we see much more of each other than they did in the 19th century. We live together more, and we sleep together, and we do all of these things, but at the end, you don't really know the person you've married until you married them,' series creator Julian Fellowes told Deadline. 'The modern world always likes to pretend that it deals with everything better than any previous generation, but you can't take the luck element out of marriage.' This season, Bertha has her eyes on the prize of an esteemed husband for her daughter, and not just anyone will do. Even though Gladys claims she loves Billy Carlton, a suitor she covertly met up with at the opera thanks to the secrecy of Mrs. Fish and Gladys' brother Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), Bertha firmly rejects him as a potential husband for Gladys. When Mr. George Russell (Morgan Spector) comes home from Morenci, Arizona where he is tending to railroad business, he is greeted with a heated discussion between mother, daughter and son about Gladys' lack of agency in who she can marry. The railroad tycoon feels a bit more conflicted about where Gladys' life could be headed, because he did promise her that she could marry for love. Those who have watched the period drama since Season 1 may remember that Gladys also had high hopes for Tom Blyth's Archie Baldwin, one of her suitors before she was even out in society, but it was her father who turned down the young man at the time through a twisted job offer to bribe him. 'I mean, arranged marriages were the norm in this period, and I mean even today, there are still places where people have arranged marriages, sometimes they work out,' Spector told Deadline. 'People do fall in love with each other. Some of those marriages really last. Some of them are very happy. It's not impossible that there can be joy and real fulfillment in those relationships.' Even after Billy attempted to approach Mr. Russell to ask his blessing for a proposal to Gladys and he chickens out at the Young Women's Christian Association benefit — hosted by Aurora Fayne (Kelli O'Hara) and her husband Charles who is desperate for a divorce, George states to his wife that the young man didn't get a chance to present his argument. Bertha doubles down on her desire for her daughter's future to be one of empowerment, influence and high status. 'A lot of the world still operates on the basis of arranged marriages. We always feel superior about that, but it's not safe to feel superior about anything. I think that some aspects of it work better and some don't, and that's life. We take life as it comes and we take chances,' Fellowes said. 'The first few years [of marriage], you get to know your wife or your husband, and sometimes it comes as a pleasant surprise, as aspects of their personality are much more interesting than you'd realize. Other times, it's the reverse. I'm not sure there's any kind of insurance you can take out against that. I think that's how life is.' Unfortunately for Gladys, it looks as if her mother got what she wanted in a way because Billy showed up in the last minutes of Season 3 Episode 2 to call off their relationship and any potential engagement. With Hector, the Duke of Buckingham's return at the end of the third season's second episode — attorney in tow — only time will tell what path Gladys, still teary-eyed and looking like a deer in the headlights, ends up walking amidst the wishes of her mother. As Mr. Russell tells his daughter, he is just as surprised as she is at what this could signal.
