Not just the US; there is another country that attained independence on July 4

Time of India2 days ago
Every year on July 4, the United States lights up in celebration of its
Independence Day
, marking the country's birth in 1776. But it's not the only nation with significant ties to this date. Across the globe, July 4 also holds deep historical meaning for other countries like the Philippines and Rwanda.
In the Philippines, July 4 was once known as Philippine Independence Day, the day the country was officially recognized as a sovereign state by the United States in 1946 after years of colonization. Though the Philippines now celebrates its independence on June 12, the date of its earlier declaration from Spanish rule, July 4 still stands as a landmark in the country's long struggle for freedom.
Meanwhile, in Rwanda, July 4 marks Liberation Day, commemorating the end of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
While the country's official Independence Day is July 1, Liberation Day is viewed as equally, if not more, significant, as it is symbolic of Rwanda's rebirth and movement toward unity and healing.
So while Americans wave flags and watch fireworks on the Fourth of July, people in other parts of the world reflect on that same date as a powerful moment of hard-earned freedom and national transformation.
How was the Philippines historically related to the US?
The Philippines was earlier ruled by the United States, as a colony following Spain's surrender in the Treaty of Paris (1898).

This came after decades of struggle, including the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule in the late 1800s and the Philippine-American War in the early 1900s.
Although Filipino revolutionaries had already declared independence on June 12, 1898, the US did not recognise this and instead annexed the country. Filipino leaders continued their push for full sovereignty through diplomatic efforts, resulting in the Philippine Autonomy Act of 1916, which promised future independence.
The promise was finally fulfilled on July 4, 1946.
However, in 1962, the Philippines officially moved its Independence Day celebrations to June 12, honoring the original declaration of freedom from Spanish rule.
Rwanda got freedom from Belgium on July 4
On the other hand, Rwanda celebrates Liberation Day on July 4, which marks the end of the horrific 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Although Rwanda's official Independence Day is July 1, when it gained freedom from Belgium in 1962, Liberation Day carries deep emotional and national significance.
The date represents Rwanda's transition into a new era of healing and rebuilding. According to Albert Nzacahinyeretse, Church Empowerment Zone Manager at World Relief Rwanda, 'Independence is a public holiday on the first of July, but its celebration is combined with Liberation Day on the 4th of July. During the event, we celebrate unity, accountability and the nation. The independence holiday is important to us since it helps younger generations to know more about the history of the nation and get involved in developing the country,' as shared in The New Times Rwanda.
So, while the US marks its independence with fireworks and festivities, other countries like the Philippines and Rwanda also look to July 4 as a day of hard-won freedom, for their own history and reasons to remember.

America Party launched: Elon Musk announces ‘The way we're going to crack....'

Elon Musk Elon Musk said that he is officially launching the America Party, ending the two-party system in the US. The Tesla CEO conducted a poll on July 4 - US Independence Day asking X (formerly Twitter) users whether America Party should be formed. 'Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?,' he wrote in a Twitter post on July 4. Announcing the poll result in a post earlier today, Musk wrote: 'By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!'. Adding further, he said 'When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.' Musk first floated the idea to form a political party if the Trump administration's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' gets passed by the congress. With the latest post, he has made it official that he is indeed forming a new political party. However, it remains unclear if the party has been registered with the US election authorities. The most recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings showed no indication of any registration so far. Also, the tech billionaire did not share any other details of his America Party. BJP, Nitish Kumar made Bihar crime capital of India: Rahul Gandhi on Gopal Khemka killing

With prominent businessman Gopal Khemka being shot dead outside his residence in Patna, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the incident has once again proven that the BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar have together made Bihar the "crime capital of India". Gandhi also asserted that in the upcoming assembly polls, the vote will not be just to change the government, but to save the state. Khemka was shot dead outside his residence in Patna by a bike-borne assailant, seven years after miscreants had gunned down his son in Hajipur, police said on Saturday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is your tinnitus getting worse? "Brothers and sisters of Bihar, this injustice cannot be tolerated any more. The government that cannot protect your children cannot take responsibility for your future either," he said. Every murder, every loot, every bullet is a cry for change, Gandhi said. "Now is the time for a new Bihar - where there is progress, not fear. This time, the vote is not just to change the government, but to save Bihar," he said. An SIT, comprising officials of the Special Task Force and sleuths of the central district police, has been constituted to supervise the ongoing investigation into the businessman's murder, the DGP has said. US Social Security Administration praises Trump's tax bill, critics call it ‘blatant misinformation'

After the US Congress passed the tax cut and spending bill and President Donald Trump signed it to become 'One Big, Beautiful Bill Act', an email was sent by the Social Security Administration (SSA) which claimed the new spending bill has eliminated taxes on benefits for most recipients, but the critics have dubbed it 'misleading' and 'lie'. The reconciliation bill, which President Trump called 'One big, beautiful bill', was signed on July 4 during Independence Day celebrations after the Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives passed it. The provisions in the act reportedly include stripping people off their health insurance, slashing food aid for the poor, revoking clean energy development which would trigger an increase in national debt by trillions of dollars. The email circulated by apolitical SSA claims the bill 'eliminates federal income taxes on social security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples.' Commissioner of the SSA, Frank Bisignano, said that nearly 90% of social security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income tax on their respective benefits. Unbelievable. I was a deputy commissioner of the Social Security Administration. Appointed by President Biden. The agency has never issued such a blatant political statement. The fact that Trump and his minion running SSA has done this is unconscionable. — Jeff Nesbit (@jeffnesbit) July 3, 2025 'This is a historic step forward for America's seniors. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump's promise to protect social security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they've earned,' Bisignano said, The Guardian reported. However, in one of the biggest cache 22 situations for the SSA, Trump's spending bill does not essentially eliminate federal taxes on social security because the bill was passed in the Congress via reconciliation process, to avoid the pushback from the Democrats. Though Trump's package does include a temporary tax deduction of $6,000 for people aged 65 and above and $12,000 for married seniors. Last month, Trump's Council of Economic Advisers argued that 9 in 10 seniors would not pay any federal tax on their respective social security benefits. A former SSA official, Jeff Nesbit, who served under Republican and Democratic presidents posted on X, 'The agency has never issued such a blatant political statement. The fact that Trump and his minion running SSA has done this is unconscionable.'
