Andhra govt's 'negligence' led to Simhachalam wall collapse mishap: YSRCP chief Jagan
Seven people were crushed to death in the early hours of the day when a rain-soaked wall collapsed at the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple in Visakhapatnam.
"Severe action must be taken against those responsible for the mishap, and ₹1 crore ex gratia should be given to the families of the deceased," Reddy told reporters after meeting the victims' kin.
He urged the government to match the ₹1 crore compensation paid to the victims of the LG Polymers gas leak in 2020 during the previous YSRCP regime. If the state fails to pay the amount, Reddy said he would cover the balance after returning to power.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced ₹25 lakh compensation for each of the deceased and ₹3 lakh for the injured.
After consoling the bereaved families, Reddy alleged that the collapsed wall was constructed without following proper procedures—"It was started only six days ago and completed two days ago," he claimed.
Calling it a hurried job, Reddy said the wall was not made of Reinforced Cement Concrete . Despite heavy rains, devotees were asked to queue along it, showing the government's negligence, he alleged.
Despite knowing that Chandanotsavam is a calendar event at the temple and that lakhs of devotees would attend, Reddy said the authorities "failed" to take proper measures and allowed devotees to queue up at the ten-foot-high wall without providing any facilities.
According to the YSRCP chief, 'ill-fated' incidents such as the Simhachalam wall collapse and the Tirupati temple stampede in January have occurred under the N Chandrababu Naidu-led NDA government.
Recalling the death of 29 devotees during the Godavari Pushkaralu pilgrimage in the previous TDP regime , Reddy emphasised that this legacy of disasters continues due to the government's "sheer negligence".
He further claimed that several cows had died at a Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams goshala recently. He also pointed out the deaths of tortoises of religious significance at Srikurmam and the bulldozing of the Kasinayana ashram in Kadapa.
"Chandrababu Naidu is in the habit of forming committees whenever such incidents occur, but the whereabouts of their reports are never known," he alleged, citing the fate of the Tirupati laddu ghee controversy.

TTD plans door-to-door inspection to identify other faith staffers
1 2 Tirupati: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is contemplating a door-to-door inspection to identify non-Hindu staffers working in the temple trust. As per Andhra Pradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act and the TTD Act, only Hindus can work in TTD, which draws its funds from donations extended by devotees visiting Tirumala and other Hindu temples under its fold in Tirupati and across the country. While this Act has existed for decades, some non-Hindus managed to get into the organisation. Following a vigilance enquiry carried out by the TTD administration in 2018, it emerged that there were about 44 non-Hindus working in the temple trust. After the TTD management served notices to the 44 non-Hindus, they moved Andhra Pradesh high court challenging the move. The matter is still pending before the court. The new TTD trust board, which was formed after the TDP-led NDA govt came to power in the state, passed a resolution last year to identify and remove non-Hindu employees from the temple trust. A vigilance enquiry was carried out, which found that 29 non-Hindus were still on the payrolls of TTD, with 15 of them retired in the last six years. The employees were offered a voluntary retirement package by the TTD, but they did not accept the offer and intimated to the management that they will continue to fight the case legally. Recently, an assistant executive officer rank official was suspended by the TTD after he was found to be following a different faith. A few days later, another executive engineer rank officer was also suspended after he was found displaying his allegiance to another faith. Bandi Sanjay, Union minister of state for home affairs, claimed that nearly 1,000 non-Hindus were working in the temple trust and asked the TTD management to immediately initiate action. Responding to Bandi's remarks, state endowments minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy said a detailed enquiry is underway to identify all non-Hindus working in the temple trust. TTD trust board member G Bhanu Prakash Reddy said the temple management is contemplating a door-to-door inspection as part of the vigilance enquiry. "It has come to our notice that many employees having Hindu names have converted to other faith, which is a violation of TTD Act and also the Endowments Act. Without physically visiting their houses, the vigilance enquiry will remain incomplete. It is unfortunate that such people continue to draw their salaries and other benefits from the TTD while practising other faiths," he said. A detailed discussion on the proposed door-to-door survey will be held during the TTD trust board meeting scheduled for July 22.

YSRCP MP arrested in ₹3,200cr liquor scam in Andhra
YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy (File Photo) VIJAYAWADA: YSRCP MP P V Midhun Reddy was arrested by Andhra SIT late on Saturday after nearly seven hours of questioning in the alleged Rs 3,200 crore liquor scam. The arrest comes after the anticipatory bail petitions of Mithun Reddy were rejected by AP high court and Supreme Court, reports Madhu Rasala. He is the second politician to be arrested in the alleged scam that took place during the previous YSRCP rule. With the latest arrest, the number of accused arrested so far has increased to 12. Earlier, Midhun Reddy arrived in Vijayawada from New Delhi amid heightened security. Krishna district police, under the supervision of Gannavaram DSP, ensured a tight security cordon around the airport. All vehicles entering the premises were thoroughly inspected, and the MP was escorted by police to the SIT office. Police had earlier issued a lookout notice and alerted immigration authorities. The SIT, constituted to investigate alleged irregularities in the liquor policy during the previous YSRCP regime, has been probing alleged illegal financial transactions, policy manipulation, and the misuse of official machinery in the framing and implementation of the state's liquor policy. Sources close to the probe said Reddy was allegedly involved in key decision-making meetings regarding the state's liquor procurement and distribution mechanisms. The SIT has reportedly tracked a Rs 5 crore fund transfer from a third-party company to a firm linked to the MP, raising suspicions of money laundering and quid pro quo arrangements. Officials believe Midhun Reddy possesses crucial information about the ultimate beneficiaries of the proceeds generated through the liquor policy.

CM Naidu calls for plastic-free Andhra, links excessive use to cancer risk
Tirupati, Jul 19 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday called for the elimination of plastic to protect the environment, claiming that 'excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer". Addressing a meeting in Tirupati as part of the 'Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra' initiative, Naidu said that plastic has become 'the biggest demon" threatening the environment. The vision lays out a comprehensive framework for economic advancement, social equity, environmental sustainability, and governance excellence. 'To protect the environment, we must chase away this plastic demon. Excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer… No one should fall victim to this," the chief minister said. From toothbrushes to the plates we eat from, he pointed out that plastic has become a part of daily life, adding that common items like water bottles, cups, and covers are harmful. He further claimed that 'plastic pollution is contaminating the soil", hindering the percolation of rainwater, and causing other environmental issues. Naidu announced plans to make the state secretariat plastic-free by August 15, extend this initiative to all municipalities by October 2, and implement it across the state by December. Calling on every citizen to be part of the 'Swachh Andhra' mission by keeping their homes and surroundings clean, he also promised to clear all piled-up garbage across the state by October. The chief minister noted that the TDP-led NDA government had approved solar panel installations for 20 lakh homes, turning rooftops, offices, and fields into hubs of solar energy. 'I'm focusing on green energy. With global warming triggering multiple challenges, green energy is the only solution," he said. Criticising YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, Naidu alleged that the latter 'created chaos" during a recent visit to Bangarupalyam by 'dumping mangoes" on the road while meeting farmers. Naidu said the NDA alliance government came to the rescue of mango farmers by ensuring a payment of Rs 12,000 per tonne—Rs 4,000 from the government and Rs 8,000 from buyers. Earlier, during a visit to an integrated waste processing plant at Tukivakam village in Tirupati, the chief minister directed officials to make Andhra Pradesh 'a national model in waste processing and utilisation."
