Williams see fixes for problems, hope to stay fifth in F1 championship
Team boss James Vowles told Reuters that they understood the brake problem that prevented Carlos Sainz from starting in Austria last Sunday and a fix would be in place for this weekend's British Grand Prix.
"The Carlos issue, we're very clear on it, it can be replicated on a rig, it can be understood, and for Silverstone we'll have mitigation in place," he said.
An issue that has sidelined Alex Albon in the last two races was more of a challenge but Vowles expected a solution by Sunday.
"The issue that Alex suffered was such an instantaneous and rapid problem that it's very hard to replicate," he said at an event in London with sponsor Gulf Oil International for a fan-created livery to be used in Brazil.
"Whilst the full detail of why exactly it's happening is not complete, we do have four or five different tests that will allow us to uncover that.
"By the time we're going racing on Saturday/Sunday, we're in a good place but it will have compromise on the weekend."

Albon has retired from his last three outings, in Spain due to collisions and a damaged car, and then in Canada and Austria due to issues that Vowles said were also seen on Sainz's side to a lesser extent.
"There's evidence of it being on the other side of the garage as well. I think sometimes it's very significant and severe and other times it's more manageable," he explained.
Williams are 19 points clear of sixth-placed Racing Bulls after 11 of 24 races and 107 behind Red Bull in fourth.
Vowles said the upgrade, the last big one of the season, looked substantial on paper and would come either for Belgium or Hungary later this month.
"We've been focused in the wind tunnel on '26, we've been trying to be clever about how we develop this upgrade so we'll see where we get to," he said.
"We need to make sure the car is reliable, we don't have accidents and we operate it correctly with strategy, pitstops engineering etc.
"And all of that put together, even with the car we have today, I'm comfortable we can hold on to fifth in the championship. At the performance step, that should only make our life easier." REUTERS

They also denied that he had intimate meetings with more than 1,000 men, but did not give a figure. Jiao could not be immediately reached for comment. Same-sex relations are not illegal in China, but dissemination of images of sexual acts is punishable by law. Taking pictures of sexual activities in a private setting and sharing them also violates privacy rights and could be deemed a criminal offence. Many social media users expressed public health concerns, with one Weibo user warning the incident could be "a big headache" for epidemic prevention authorities. Social media users also circulated a montage of headshots of nearly 100 men supposed to have met the "red uncle", prompting mock advice from some, urging women to check if their fiances or husbands featured. Norris won after Piastri received a 10-second penalty while he was leading the race. LONDON – Nico Hulkenberg's breakthrough podium for Swiss-based Sauber at the British Grand Prix will boost belief in the future Audi works team, according to principal Jonathan Wheatley. Hulkenberg, 37, finished third at Silverstone for the German's first podium finish in 239 starts – an achievement many thought would never happen for a driver who made his Formula One debut 15 years ago. He also started last on the grid in Sunday's chaotic and rain-affected race, another element that made his success even more surreal. "Really for me, what I've taken from today is people start believing in us," Wheatley told a much bigger crowd of reporters than usual outside the Sauber paddock hospitality on Sunday evening. "I can say the words, I can say we're gaining momentum, I can say we're putting performance on the car, I can say (overall boss) Mattia (Binotto) and all the hard work he's been putting in before I came here is coming to light. Sauber also have an all-new lineup this year of Hulkenberg and Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, last year's Formula Two champion. Already this season Hulkenberg has finished fifth in Spain to lift Sauber off the bottom of the standings and he has scored in his last four races, with the team now only 18 points behind fifth-placed Williams. His points tally of 37 in 12 races is already far more than the team scored in the last two seasons combined. Asked whether Sauber were further ahead than expected in their plan for the future, Wheatley refused to tempt fate. "You can think of the plan as a straight line and there's some hairpins on the way and there's some stoplights and traffic works," he said. "It's a great day for the team. Everyone's working so hard here. It was a mature race performance." Hulkenberg finished behind the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The British team, meanwhile, are expecting Piastri to turn British Grand Prix hurt to his advantage as the Formula One title battle with Norris gets increasingly intense and rivals are left trailing. The pair are now only eight points apart at the top, with Piastri still leading the standings at the halfway point in the season.
