Phulpur conversion case: Week on, mastermind evades arrest; multi-state search underway

Hindustan Times07-07-2025
Despite more than a week having passed since the conversion case involving a Scheduled Caste girl from Phulpur, Prayagraj—who was allegedly lured to Thrissur, Kerala, with promises of money and converted to Islam—came to light, the key accused and mastermind, Mohd Taj, remains absconding and out of police reach. The ACP stated that some leads regarding the possible whereabouts of the mastermind have been obtained, and that Prayagraj Police, in coordination with the ATS, are working closely to apprehend him at the earliest. (FOR REPRESENTATION)
Prayagraj police have deployed three separate teams to different states to track down the mastermind of the case. Additionally, they have started scanning mobile records and travel details of the relatives of all the three accused—two of whom, including a 19-year-old woman, are currently in jail in connection with the case.
During police interrogation, one of the accused, Daraksha Bano, revealed that Mohd Taj is a resident of Jogia Sheikhpur in Phulpur, Prayagraj. He is her sister's brother-in-law and has been working in Kerala for many years. She admitted to taking the teenage girl to Kerala at Taj's insistence.
As per Daraksha, Taj had told her that girls were needed for jobs there and that he would receive a commission for arranging this.
Based on the last location, three police teams are currently searching for Taj in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and other states, but no leads have been found so far.
According to assistant commissioner of police (ACP) (Phulpur) Pankaj Lavania, close family members of all the three accused are being questioned about the activities of the accused and why they failed to notice any suspicious behavior.
'We have collected mobile numbers and bank account details of the family members and relatives of all three accused, including mastermind Taj, and are thoroughly scanning them for any evidence that could indicate their involvement in the conversion racket,' ACP (Phulpur) Pankaj Lavania said. 'It is unlikely that Daraksha took the girl to Thrissur, Kerala, without her mother knowing anything about her whereabouts. We are repeatedly questioning the parents and siblings of all three accused,' he added.
The ACP further stated that some leads regarding the possible whereabouts of the mastermind have been obtained, and that Prayagraj Police, in coordination with the ATS, are working closely to apprehend him at the earliest.
At present, police are conducting raids across multiple states and are also investigating any possible links between the accused and terror organizations. Despite these efforts, the mastermind remains out of reach. Three police teams were dispatched last week to track him down at suspected hideouts in different states.
It may be noted that the 15-year-old girl from Phulpur was taken to Kerala on May 8 by Daraksha Bano, a woman from her neighborhood in the same village. There, she was allegedly forcibly converted to Islam at a camp run by a terrorist organisation in Thrissur, Kerala, and efforts were made to indoctrinate her into terrorism under the guise of Jihad.
On May 28, after safely recovering the girl, police arrested and sent the accused Daraksha Bano and another accused, Mohammad Kaif, to jail. Authorities are now seeking to take both accused on remand for further investigation into the case.
According to senior police officials, if Taj had indeed been working in Kerala, as claimed by accused Daraksha Bano, it is likely that he may have targeted several other girls as well. The full extent of the racket will come to light once Taj is apprehended.

7 members of gang linked to Chhota Shakeel held for kidnapping dealer over failed drug deal

The Mumbai Police crime branch has arrested seven members of an 'international gang' allegedly linked to underworld don Chhota Shakeel, in connection with the kidnapping and assault of a drug dealer and his associate for extortion, officials said on Wednesday. The investigation further revealed that the kidnapping stemmed from a dispute over a Mephedrone drug deal.(Representational Photo/HT) The drug dealer, identified as Sajid Electricwala from Surat, had been held captive by the accused for nearly a month before being rescued by the crime branch. His associate, Shabbir, who works as an estate agent, managed to escape on July 10 and approached the Oshiwara police station in Mumbai, prompting the investigation, officials said. The arrested accused have been identified as Sarvar Khan, Mehtab, Santosh Waghmare, Satish Kadu, Yunus Theverpalli, Tausif Saindi, and Rahul Sawant, police said. During the probe, police uncovered links between the accused and Chhota Shakeel. On June 12, the gang abducted Electricwala and Shabbir from a hotel in Oshiwara using three vehicles, according to investigators. The victims were taken to a farmhouse in Raigad district, where they were allegedly assaulted as part of an extortion bid. Police said the accused moved Electricwala across multiple locations, including Raigad, Nashik, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, in a bid to evade arrest. Following Shabbir's complaint, a case of kidnapping and extortion was registered and transferred to the crime branch. Considering the sensitivity of the case, six teams were formed to track down the accused. All seven accused have previous criminal records involving MCOCA, extortion, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and arms-related cases, officials said. The investigation further revealed that the kidnapping stemmed from a dispute over a Mephedrone drug deal. Electricwala had allegedly received ₹50 lakh from the accused for the supply of Mephedrone but failed to deliver the drugs or return the money. He was arrested by the Mumbai ATS in 2015 with a huge quantity of Mephedrone. The main accused, Sarvar Khan, was allegedly in contact with Chhota Shakeel's relative, police said, adding that he orchestrated the abduction to recover the funds. In a coordinated operation, three accused were apprehended from Banda in Uttar Pradesh on July 15, while the remaining four were arrested from Mumbai and Raigad. Electricwala was rescued during the raids. Police have recovered vehicles used for kidnapping along with the mobile phones of the accused persons and other electronic gadgets, he said. A local court remanded the accused persons to police custody till July 19.

Food delivery man, mechanics masked as ‘businessmen' to launder cyberfraud money

Rajkot: A delivery man working for a leading food aggregator and two garage owners were among the five out of nine people arrested as Rajkot police busted an elaborate racket that routed and laundered crores siphoned off through online gaming and other cyber frauds across 14 states. The scam syndicate, led by Mumbai-based mastermind Ashish, created bogus companies and partnership enterprises using a fake paper trail to open bank accounts, which were then rented out to cybercriminals for laundering money. Police found that at least Rs 13 crore in cyber fraud proceeds had been laundered using these accounts. "Two separate FIRs registered by the Cybercrime Police revealed that more than Rs 13 crore, proceeds of cyber fraud, were deposited into seven bank accounts," said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Parthrajsinh Gohil. Out of the nine accused, police have so far arrested five, including delivery man Ramesh Mukhida (28), garage owners Meet Gupta (22) and his father Lalbahadur Gupta (46), along with Pravin Shankharva and Hardik Limbasiya (25). A hunt is on to trace Mayur Khungla (26), a trader, and mastermind Ashish. Rajendra Khungla, who was also named in the FIRs, died in a road accident. According to police, the accused hid behind fake firms and bogus documentation. The delivery boy, garage owners, and security personnel were made partners in various bogus firms, lured by commissions. The police have busted seven such companies and as many bank accounts so far. Chintan Patel, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), said, "The modus operandi of the group was to create fake seals and partnership deeds, obtain forged PAN cards, register firms on the Udyam portal for MSME registration, open bank accounts in the firm's name, and use them for cyber frauds. The money was laundered between March 18 and April 25." Mukhida and the father-son duo were lured by commissions offered by Ashish and Shankharva. During preliminary questioning, Shankharva admitted that all the fraudulent accounts were operated by Ashish, based in Mumbai, and that proceeds from online gaming and fraud were deposited into these accounts. Police believe that more cyber fraud cases will come to light as the investigation progresses and the remaining masterminds are arrested
