Americans at risk ‘anywhere' after 6 illegal immigrants are charged in mother's murder: congressman
A South Carolina congressman is warning of threats that face Americans 'anywhere' after four years of an open border following the random murder of a Lancaster mom of two last month.
The comments come after Lancaster authorities charged six illegal immigrants, between the ages of 13 and 21, in connection with Larisha Thompson's May 2 murder.

She was shot to death while driving to meet friends in Rock Hill.
'Two children will not have a mother to come home to,' Republican South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman told Fox News Digital in a phone interview. 'It can happen anywhere, at any time. That's the sad part. We've seen it all over the country.'
He added that while Laken Riley, the Augusta University student killed by illegal Venezuelan migrant Jose Ibarra in February 2024, has become 'the face' of crimes committed by those living illegally in the United States, there are similar victims in states across the country, including Thompson and others, such as Lizbeth Medina, Jocelyn Nungaray, Rachel Morin and Kayla Hamilton.
'The positive thing is: the border's secure now, but you've got to realize: four years of leaving the doors open to over 160 countries to put criminals and anybody else that wanted to come into the country,' Norman said. 'You wouldn't open your house up like that. Yet the Democrats are still not condemning what Joe Biden intentionally did. But it's a new day, and hopefully, [it is] going to be straightened out in time.'

Lancaster County Sheriff's Office deputies located Thompson, 40, deceased with a gunshot wound behind the wheel of her vehicle on Riverside Road in Lancaster, which is located about an hour south of Charlotte, North Carolina.
On May 12, authorities announced the arrests of three adults – Asael Aminadas Torres-Chirinos, 21, Jarby Ardon Ramos-Odari, 18, and Jeyson Sobied Pineda-Salgado, 17 – and three juveniles, ages 13, 14 and 15, in connection with Thompson's death and a separate burglary that occurred on April 30.
'The unknown is what we fear,' Norman said when asked about people with criminal intentions who may have crossed illegally into the United States during the Biden administration. 'When you hear [FBI Director] Kash Patel talk about threats… the fact is that they're doing their best, but… we don't know who's here. And we're getting a lot of them out, but there's still the unknown of who's left here. And that's the problem. How many more deaths do we have to have that are just so senseless?'

Norman said he hopes prosecutors pursue the death penalty against the adult suspects accused of murdering Thompson.
'South Carolina is a great state,' Norman said, but added that people have 'got to be aware' and 'diligent.'

Lancaster Sheriff Barry Faile said Thompson's 'shooting defies any sense of decency in a civilized society,' during a May press conference.
'Ms. Thompson was going about her business on a Friday night, not bothering anyone. All of a sudden, these six men and boys – out to get something for nothing from someone they did not know and had no business bothering – pulled alongside her car, and Torres-Chirinos opened fire, killing Ms. Thompson,' Faile said at the time. 'There's no place in our society for acts like this or the people who commit them, and my hope is these six are never again among us.'
The Department of Homeland Security has placed detainers on all six individuals charged, Faile said during a press conference, adding that the community is a 'much safer place today because these six individuals are off the streets.'
Faile alleged that the suspects pulled up alongside Thompson and fatally shot her in what authorities described as a 'random robbery attempt.' Authorities believe the other five suspects were in the vehicle with Torres-Chirinos, who was driving and allegedly fired the fatal shot at Thompson. They are accused of attempting to enter her vehicle and then fleeing the scene upon realizing that it was locked.
On April 30, deputies were dispatched to the Van Wyck Mart at 644 Rock Hill Highway before 8 a.m. to investigate a burglary. The store owner told deputies that surveillance video footage showed several young men trying to get into the store around 10:30 p.m. on April 29. When they could not get inside, they allegedly broke open a door on the northwest corner of the building, which opened up to a bathroom that had access to the inside of the store.
The suspects are also accused of firing a handgun at a security camera and the bathroom door. Detectives collected ballistics evidence at the scene.

The store the suspects allegedly broke into and the location of Thompson's murder are a seven-minute drive apart. Detectives determined that ballistic evidence recovered from the scene of the murder came from the same 9 mm handgun used at the burglary days before.
Through digital surveillance, investigators also identified Torres-Chirinos at the scene of both crimes.
They questioned him at the sheriff's office on May 8, and by the end of that day, they had identified, located and detained the five additional suspects.

The three adult suspects are charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and second-degree burglary.
Authorities believe Torres-Chirinos fired the handgun in both incidents, and he is charged with two counts of firearms possession during the commission of a crime and one count of firearms possession by an unlawful alien. A judge denied bond for all three men.

The three juvenile suspects are also charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and second-degree burglary.
All six suspects are subject to removal from the United States under federal immigration law based on their immigration status, the sheriff's office said.
Thompson's family is 'grieving and trying to get their heads around how something like this could happen,' Faile added.

Immigrants who have been contributing to their U.S. communities for years while in the country illegally should be given the opportunity to earn legal status, Miami Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar said Saturday during a gathering of conservative Latinos. Salazar, a Republican whose coastal Miami-Dade district includes more than 535,000 people who identify as Hispanic or Latino, spoke about her 'Dignity Act' that she drafted with fellow Hispanic Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Texas Democrat The bill, which they introduced in 2023, would offer a way for immigrants who years ago arrived illegally to stay in the United States if they don't have a criminal record, contribute to the economy and pay restitution. Salazar, who has said she will reintroduce the legislation this month, emphasized that those who qualify would receive no government assistance, just a way to continue working in the country. 'Let's seal the border,' Salazar said. 'But once that is done, then we have to look back and start this national conversation, and then give some type of dignity to those people with no criminal record, who have been a part of our communities and who are decent human beings.' Though Salazar has been critical at times of elements of President Donald Trump's sweeping plan to deport millions of immigrants, she heaped praise on the Republican president. 'Trump will be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery, and what Reagan was for communism,' she said. Salazar's comments came during a Conservative Political Action Conference event held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood, co-hosted by Latino Wallstreet. Conservative leaders said during the conference that Hispanic Americans are only increasing their power and influence across the United States, touting the growing diversity of the Republican Party. This year's conference began one day after the U.S. Supreme Court decided Trump could move forward for now with a policy preventing children born to immigrants in the country illegally from receiving citizenship in places where there isn't pending litigation — which includes Florida. The policy also applies to children of some temporary visa holders. The policy is part of a bigger Trump administration agenda to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and end programs that have either provided temporary legal status or deferred immigration enforcement for people who came from places like Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Beyond Salazar's comments, the topic of immigration enforcement went mostly undiscussed throughout the day. When event organizer Mercedes Schlapp, a senior adviser for communications during Trump's first administration, was asked prior to Salazar's speech about the congresswoman's position on immigration — including a social media post saying she was 'heartbroken' by the way ICE raids were affecting Miami communities — Schlapp said events like CPAC are meant to bring people with different viewpoints to the stage. 'We're not going to agree on everything,' Schlapp said. 'And I think for Maria Elvira, she is speaking up for her community in South Florida.' During her speech, Salazar also denounced socialism and said Democrats have been 'infiltrated' by it, referencing self-titled democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani's recent win in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary. Donald Trump threatened in an interview Sunday to force journalists who published an initial U.S. intelligence assessment of his administration's strikes on Iran to reveal their sources or face prosecution as his effort to plaster a positive narrative over the aftermath continues. The U.S. president spoke on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, and insisted once again that U.S. airstrikes targeting three Iranian facilities last weekend completed the task of disabling the Iranian nuclear weapons development program. The strikes, Trump claimed, obliterated the Iranian government's entire (or a majority) of its supply of enriched uranium — he denied claims from Iranian officials that it was moved out of the area before the Fordow site was hit. And the president vowed legal action against Democratic members of Congress and journalists he blamed for publishing parts of a U.S. intelligence assessment of the effects of the three attacks. CBO says tax piece of GOP megabill could violate Senate Byrd Rule
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that the tax piece of President Trump's 'big, beautiful bill,' a core component of his agenda, would add to deficits after 2034, the end of the 10-year budget window, and could therefore violate the Senate's Byrd Rule. Responding in a letter to Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, CBO Director Phillip Swagel, said the congressional scoring agency 'estimates that title VII,' the Finance Committee's portion of the bill, 'increases the deficits in years after 2034.' Democrats will argue that this is a violation of the Senate's Byrd Rule, which determines what legislation is eligible to pass the Senate with a simple-majority vote on the reconciliation fast track. The Byrd Rule requires that legislation considered as a reconciliation package not increase the deficit for a fiscal year beyond the 'budget window' covered by the measure. The budget window for the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act spans from 2025 to 2034. Merkley's staff said the Republican bill is out of compliance with the rules of reconciliation by exceeding the spending limits outlined in their budget resolution by trillions of dollars and adding to the deficit beyond the 10-year window. Swagel, who was appointed to his post during Trump's first term, told Merkley that that tax portion of the bill would increase the deficit by nearly $3.5 trillion from 2025 to 2034. Merkley could attempt to raise 60-vote point of order against the bill on the floor in an effort to block the legislation. But Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) feel confident that the tax portion of the bill complies with the Byrd Rule. Thune says Graham has authority under Section 312 of the Congressional Budget Act 'to determine baseline numbers for spending and revenue.' Graham has judged the extension of the 2017 expiring Trump tax cuts as a continuation of 'current policy' and therefore as not adding to the deficit. Republicans say they have offset the cost of language to make expired corporate tax cuts permanent by finding more than $1.6 trillion in spending cuts, including an estimated $930 billion in cuts to Medicaid. The bill narrowly advanced in the Senate late Saturday night, teeing it up for an expected final vote on Monday.
