Major bank unleashes wild new strategy to stop $107 million issue: 'Game-changer'

Yahoo6 days ago
The Commonwealth Bank (CBA) is set to lead scammers on a wild goose chase while gathering important information on how they work. Aussies lost more than $107 million to phone scams last year, and CBA has devised an Australian-banking first approach to crack down on this scourge.
The bank has teamed up with cyber intelligence firm Apate.ai to create thousands of AI-powered bots that sound exactly like everyday Aussies. CBA told Yahoo Finance it has to be fairly hush-hush about how the system worked to ensure scammers didn't discover how to get around it.
But James Roberts, CBA's General Manager of Group Fraud, said the advancement will 'flip the script' on criminals who try to rinse Aussies of their hard-earned money.

'Scammers are increasingly using AI to target Australians — we're turning the tables by using AI to fight back," he said.
"Every minute a scammer is engaging with a bot is a minute they're not targeting an Australian.
"The near real-time intelligence being gathered is a game-changer in how we help to protect our customers and the broader community.'If a scammer calls one of these bots, they'll be greeted with an Australian-sounding person on the other end of the phone.
The con artist will try all their tricks to convince the would-be victim to hand over their personal information, or card and banking details.
They might try to say there was an issue with their bank account or a dodgy payment made in their name in some faraway country, and the person needs to act quickly to prevent any money from being taken. However, the scammer will just be talking to a bot, who certainly won't be in a rush, and will engage them in 'extended conversations'.
Not only does this waste the criminal's time, but it also allows the bot to gather vital information about how the scammer works and the techniques they use.
This technology will also be deployed for text-based scams as well.
Dali Kaafar, Apate.ai's CEO, believes this will ultimately make it harder for scammers to operate in Australia.
'We're on a mission to dismantle the business models of scammers around the world," he said.
'We've designed our bots to be difficult to detect by scammers, making them incredibly effective at gathering intelligence and disrupting scam operations.
"The bots are uniquely crafted with diverse identities — varying in gender, age, tone, and cultural nuance — and fine-tuned with Australian slang and humour to improve realism.
CBA's rollout of the technology comes after a pilot program from Macquarie University last year.
Since then, the scale and sophistication of these bots has been expanded and the AI tools are able to handle hundreds of thousands of calls.
The bank hopes the bots will be able to uncover new scam techniques before they're used on the masses and lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.
The National Anti-Scams Centre found phone scams accounted for the highest overall financial losses out of all communication methods used, with text scams following in second place.
That's compared to scams coming from social media, emails, and door-to-door con artists.Error al recuperar los datos

Asian shares tick up ahead of US payrolls test; Trump's tax bill in focus

By Stella Qiu SYDNEY (Reuters) -Asian shares edged higher on Thursday as investors braced for a key U.S. jobs report that may justify imminent rate cuts by the Federal Reserve and waited on the passage of a massive U.S. tax and spending bill in Congress. Wall Street climbed overnight to close at new record highs after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. has struck a trade deal with Vietnam, including a 20% tariff on exports to the U.S. That fuelled hopes that more deals will be forthcoming, with negotiations underway for a trade agreement with India. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan advanced 0.2% to hover just below a near four-year top. Japan's Nikkei was flat. China's blue chips edged up 0.2%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.6% after data showed China's services activity expanded at the slowest pace in nine months in June. Both Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures were little changed in Asia [.N] Investors were waiting for Trump's massive tax and spending bill to pass the House of Representatives for possible final approval. The bill is expected to add $3.3 trillion to the national debt, slash taxes and reduce social safety net programs. The main risk event for markets will be the U.S. payrolls figures due later in the day. Analysts are forecasting a rise of 110,000 in June with the jobless rate ticking up to 4.3% but the stakes are high after a private sector payrolls report surprised with the first fall in over two years. The resilience of the labour market is a major reason the majority of Federal Reserve members say they can afford to hold off on cutting rates until they can gauge the real impact of tariffs on inflation. "These labour market indicators warn of the risk that the unemployment rate could spike to 4.4%, the highest since October 2021," said Tony Sycamore, analyst at IG. "This would quickly increase the probability of a July Fed rate cut to around 70%." Futures imply just a 25% probability for a rate cut this month from the Fed, which has not eased policy at all this year, drawing the ire of Trump who reiterated his call on Wednesday for Chair Jerome Powell to resign. The Treasuries market was tense before the data as a weak jobs report would send yields sharply lower. Ten-year Treasury bond yield slipped 2 basis points to 4.265% on Thursday, while two-year yields eased 2 bps to 3.77%. The dollar is again under pressure, having caught some relief overnight. Concerns about the Fed's independence in the wake of Trump's criticism have driven the dollar to its lowest against its peers in over three years. Trump, who said rates should be cut to 1% from the current Fed benchmark rate of 4.25% to 4.50%, has repeatedly railed against Powell for not lowering borrowing costs since his return to the White House in January. The euro inched up 0.1% to $1.1807, just a whisker away from a nearly four-year top of $1.1829 hit on Tuesday, while sterling added 0.1%, recovering a steep 0.8% fall overnight, as fears about the future of its finance minister Rachel Reeves eased. Investor anxiety over UK finances after the British government's reversal on welfare reforms caused gilt yields to jump overnight, up nearly 23 basis points at one point, the most since October 2022. In commodities markets, oil prices were slightly lower after jumping 3% overnight as Iran suspended cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog. U.S. crude futures slipped 0.4% to $67.20 a barrel while Brent was at $68.84 per barrel, also 0.4% lower on the day. Gold prices eased 0.4% to $3,342 an ounce. KIOXIA AiSAQ Software Advances AI RAG with New Version of Vector Search Library

New Open-Source Software Enables Flexible Balancing of Capacity and Performance Based on User Needs and Environment SAN JOSE, Calif., July 03, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In an ongoing effort to improve the usability of AI vector database searches within retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems by optimizing the use of solid-state drives (SSDs), KIOXIA today announced an update to its AiSAQ™ (All-in-Storage ANNS with Product Quantization) software. This new open-source release introduces flexible controls that allow system architects to define the balance point between search performance and the number of vectors, which are opposing factors with the fixed capacity of SSD storage in the system. The resulting benefit enables architects of RAG systems to fine-tune the optimal balance between specific workloads and their requirements, without any hardware modifications. First introduced in January 2025, KIOXIA AiSAQ software uses a novel approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS) algorithm that is optimized for SSDs and eliminates the need to store index data in DRAM. By enabling vector searches directly on SSDs and reducing host memory requirements, KIOXIA AiSAQ technology allows vector databases to scale, largely without the restrictions caused by limited DRAM capacity. When the installed capacity of the SSD in the system is fixed, increasing search performance (queries per second) requires more SSD capacity consumed per vector. This results in a smaller number of vectors. Conversely, to maximize the number of vectors, SSD capacity consumption per vector needs to be reduced, which results in lower performance. The optimal balance between these two opposing conditions varies depending on the specific workload. To find the appropriate balance, KIOXIA AiSAQ software introduces flexible configuration options. This latest update allows administrators to select the optimal balance for a variety of contrasting workloads among the RAG system. This update makes KIOXIA AiSAQ technology a suitable SSD-based ANNS for not only RAG applications, but also other vector-hungry applications such as offline semantic searches. With growing demand for scalable AI services, SSDs offer a practical alternative to DRAM for managing the high throughput and low latency that RAG systems require. KIOXIA AiSAQ software makes it possible to meet these demands efficiently, enabling large-scale generative AI without being constrained by limited memory resources. By open-sourcing KIOXIA AiSAQ software, the company is advancing SSD-centric architectures and supporting broader adoption of scalable AI systems. "With the latest version of KIOXIA AiSAQ software, we're giving developers and system architects the tools to fine-tune both performance and capacity," said Neville Ichhaporia, senior vice president and general manager of the SSD business unit at KIOXIA America, Inc. "This level of flexibility is critical to building scalable, RAG systems – powered by SSD storage. By open-sourcing our technology, we're reinforcing our commitment to the AI community with solutions that are both powerful and accessible to everyone."
