Inmate at Stony Mountain Institution dies

An inmate serving his sentence at a Manitoba prison has died.
Gordon Kornelson, 80, an inmate from Stony Mountain Institution, died of 'apparent natural causes' on June 7 according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). His death was announced on Wednesday.
CSC said Kornelson had been serving a sentence of four years for sexual assault since May 5, 2025.
His next-of-kin have been notified.
The CSC said it will review the circumstances of his death, as it does in all cases involving the death of an inmate.

Authorities subsequently laid a stunt driving charge, triggering an automatic 14-day vehicle impoundment and a 30-day licence suspension under provincial law. The accused is also scheduled to appear in traffic court at a later date. 'Slow down (and) drive safe,' said OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer said in a social media post detailing the incident.

16-year-old stabbed ‘a number of times' in Dunbar, Vancouver police say

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ethan Cairns A teenage boy was sent to hospital with serious injuries Saturday night after being stabbed 'a number of times' in Vancouver's Dunbar neighbourhood, according to police. The Vancouver Police Department said the 'violent confrontation' unfolded around 8 p.m. at West 16th Avenue and Wallace Street. The 16-year-old victim's injuries are not life-threatening, according to the VPD. The suspect, another teenager, left the area before police arrived but was later arrested at his home. 'Police believe the victim and suspect knew each other,' reads a Sunday news release. 'The file remains under investigation.' Police say the suspect is next due to appear in court on Aug. 21, and Crown has not yet approved charges.

Waterloo Regional Police are investigating after a firework was thrown from a moving truck at a person sitting on a bench in Uptown Waterloo. (Sidra Jafri/CTV News) Waterloo Regional Police are investigating after a firework was thrown from a moving truck at a person sitting on a bench in Uptown Waterloo. The incident happened around 2:40 a.m. Sunday near King Street South and Willis Way. Police say a lit firework was tossed from the front passenger seat of a black pickup truck and landed on the victim's lap. The vehicle did not stop and was last seen heading toward the Uptown core. The suspect is described as a white male wearing a white hat and black t-shirt. He was sitting in the front passenger seat. No injuries were reported and police say the firework did not go off. The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to call 519-570-9777 ext. 6399.
