Prince Harry's pre-wedding tensions with Queen revealed as 'Meghan Markle's sincerity questioned'

Daily Record2 days ago
A new book claims that the late Queen was "dismayed" by Prince Harry's behaviour in the run-up to his wedding.
Over seven years on from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's marital union, fresh allegations have emerged about strains prior to their wedding ceremony.
While it is common knowledge that the lead-up to their May 2018 wedding faced choppy waters, particularly with Meghan's father withdrawing from attending at the eleventh hour, a Royal biographer has now unveiled claims that tensions ran higher than previously thought.

According to the author, behind the scenes, Prince Harry had allegedly caused the late Queen Elizabeth II to feel 'dismayed' by certain elements of the wedding plans, even suggesting that he nearly jeopardised his relationship with his grandmother.

Royal author Sally Bedell Smith alleges that she was informed by the now-deceased Lady Elizabeth Anson – a party planner with high society links and the Queen's cousin – that the Queen harboured "very worried" feelings regarding her grandson. The veracity of Meghan's intentions also came under scrutiny, reports the Mirror.
The comments attributed to Lady Anson, who passed away in 2020, refer to events that unfolded over seven years ago. However, even as time has marched on since Harry and Meghan exchanged vows, Jennie Bond, ex-BBC Royal correspondent, relayed to the Mirror that Meghan recently appeared to revisit these past incidents first.
Jennie Bond conveyed her thoughts: "There have been too many reports about tensions in the weeks running up to Harry and Meghan's marriage to discount them. I think the old saying 'there's no smoke without fire' holds true."
"Lady Elizabeth Anson was certainly a very well-connected and informed source for these latest reports, which suggest that the Queen felt Harry was rushing into a marriage too quickly.
"Worse than that, it seems the Queen and other members of the Royal family doubted Meghan's sincerity and found her very difficult to deal with.

"It's extremely sad to think that the situation also soured the late Queen's relationship with her very much loved grandson, Harry: a young man she had nurtured and guided through the very worst time of his life, the death of his mother.
"Is it fair that all this is being brought up so many years later? Maybe not, but then perhaps Meghan shouldn't allude to lies being told about her eight years ago, which she did in a recent podcast.

"The fact is the royal story is always a source of curiosity and will sell books and papers, especially when there is a whiff of discord or scandal."
One bombshell claim made in Bedell-Smith's Substack is that the former monarch had been left shocked that Harry had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the wedding ceremony without asking the Dean of Windsor first and that the now Duke of Sussex thought his grandmother could just "do what she wants".
According to Bedell Smith, Lady Anson revealed that Harry had "blown" his relationship with the Queen.

Several months before the wedding, Lady Anson recounted to her: "She [the Queen] said she was really upset. I was shocked when the Queen told me this, how she was so saddened. I had no idea about the conversation, that he was rude to her for ten minutes.
"They had tea with her the day before yesterday. She was trying to find out about the wedding dress, and Meghan wouldn't tell her."

However, closer to the wedding day, Bedell Smith claims Lady Anson informed her that Harry and the Queen had "patched things up" after he shared details of the upcoming wedding with her. Bedell Smith recounts Lady Anson describing Harry as "besotted and weak about women."
Jennie now believes these claims indicate a significant change in Harry's character. She commented: "It does seem quite out of character for Harry to disrespect his grandmother and, if he did, it is a sorry reflection of how his relationship changed him.
"He always claimed they had something special, and that she could confide in him in a way she did not with other family members. He suggested he was in some way her protector...making sure 'she had the right people around her.'".
"The late Queen was meticulous about including both Harry and Meghan in statements she made about the situation and made it clear she would always regard them as part of the family. Whether she would still feel quite so magnanimous today is something we shall never know. I just hope Harry now feels it was all worth it."

Gregg Wallace: Timeline of misconduct review amid reports of MasterChef sacking

TV presenter Gregg Wallace has been sacked from his presenting role on MasterChef ahead of a review into allegations about historical misconduct, BBC News has said. The 60-year-old, who stepped away from hosting the BBC show last year amid the allegations, has been hit by a new wave of claims published by the news site on Tuesday. In an Instagram post he claimed that the investigation, the outcome of which is yet to be published, 'exonerates me of all the serious allegations which made headlines last year'. Here we take a look at the allegations made against the TV star: – November 28 2024 Wallace faces allegations of inappropriate sexual comments from 13 people across a range of shows over a 17-year period, as reported by BBC News. The TV star steps away from presenting MasterChef while Banijay, the show's production company, announces it is conducting an external review to 'fully and impartially investigate' the claims against him. BBC News says allegations include the presenter 'talking openly about his sex life, taking his top off in front of a female worker saying he wanted to 'give her a fashion show', and telling a junior female colleague he was not wearing any boxer shorts under his jeans'. Broadcaster Kirsty Wark, who was a Celebrity MasterChef contestant in 2011, says he told 'sexualised' jokes during filming. Model Ulrika Jonsson tells The Telegraph that when she competed on Celebrity MasterChef in 2017, Wallace allegedly had to apologise after making a 'rape joke', which caused another female contestant to become 'really distressed'. Sir Rod Stewart takes to Instagram following the accusations, accusing Wallace of 'humiliating' his wife Penny Lancaster on Celebrity MasterChef in 2021. The TV star's lawyers say 'it is entirely false that he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature', BBC News reports. Wallace thanks his Instagram followers for 'showing their support'. – November 29 2024 Wallace faces a string of new allegations with one woman, who worked on a travel show with him, accusing him of making 'lesbian jokes constantly', as reported by BBC News. The charity Ambitious About Autism says it had dropped Wallace as an ambassador, citing the 'recent allegations'. – November 30 2024 Producer and director Dawn Elrick posts a letter on Instagram which includes a number of anonymous accounts from people who allege they 'have experienced sexism and sexual harassment within the TV industry'. She claims the letter, which accuses Wallace of making lewd comments, was sent to the BBC in 2022. The Sunday Telegraph reports producer Georgia Harding, who worked on MasterChef between 2014 and 2015 and later Eat Well For Less, claimed she raised concerns about 'inappropriate' behaviour from him while working on the show. Banijay UK confirms it has appointed law firm Lewis Silkin to lead the investigation into Wallace's alleged behaviour. – December 1 2024 Wallace says in a video posted to Instagram that accusations about him making sexual comments towards staff and guests have come from 'middle-class women of a certain age'. TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp tells BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend that she was 'so embarrassed' she thought she 'might cry' after Wallace allegedly made a comment to her about his sex life. Celebrity MasterChef 2012 champion Emma Kennedy tells Times Radio the former greengrocer 'just doesn't understand that some behaviour is completely inappropriate'. – December 2 2024 Downing Street says Wallace's response to the accusations being made against him was 'inappropriate and misogynistic'. A spokesperson also says that Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has held talks with BBC bosses in the wake of the Wallace row. Following the backlash, Wallace apologises for any 'offence' or 'upset' he caused with his remarks and said he will now 'take some time out' while the investigation is under way. – December 3 2024 Two MasterChef celebrity Christmas specials are pulled from the BBC's schedule. Wallace faces fresh allegations with one woman claiming he touched her bottom after an event and another alleging he pressed his crotch against her while filming on a different show, according to BBC News. – December 4 2024 Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says politicians should be ready to put in place 'mechanisms' that would instil 'confidence' that women will be taken seriously in reports of inappropriate behaviour after a Labour MP asked him about 'women of a certain age', reflecting comments Wallace apologised for. MasterChef presenter John Torode says he 'loves being part of' the programme and 'will continue to be a part of it' after Wallace stepped back from the show. A ghostwriter claims Wallace sexually harassed her while she was working on his 2012 autobiography. – December 10 2024 Ms Nandy says she is 'prepared to take further action' if the creative industries cannot address 'cultures of silence and issues being swept under the rug' in relation to claims of misconduct while appearing before the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) Committee. – April 25 2025 Wallace tells the Daily Mail he 'thought about suicide all the time' after allegations of misconduct were made against him. – July 8 2025 Wallace is sacked as MasterChef presenter following the inquiry into his alleged misconduct by production company Banijay, BBC News reports. Fresh claims about the TV presenter are made from 50 more people to the corporation including allegations he groped one MasterChef worker and pulled his trousers down in front of another, BBC News says. BBC News says it has not seen the final review from Banijay, but it is understood the presenter has been sacked. In an Instagram post the former greengrocer claims he had been cleared of the 'most serious and sensational accusations' against him, ahead of the published review.

Gregg Wallace sacked as MasterChef presenter, says BBC News

The 60-year-old had stepped away from hosting the BBC cooking competition last year after a number of historical complaints came to light. There have been fresh claims about the TV presenter from 50 more people to the corporation including allegations he groped one MasterChef worker and pulled his trousers down in front of another, BBC News said. A university student has claimed he reached under her skirt and pinched her bottom in a nightclub, and a junior worker alleged he dropped his trousers in front of her while he was not wearing any underwear. Gregg Wallace co-presented MasterChef until last year (Ian West/PA) Production firm Banijay previously said Wallace is 'committed to fully co-operating' with the external review while his lawyers have previously strongly denied 'he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature', according to BBC News. Some of the more recent claims include a MasterChef worker who said she tried to complain about comments she alleged he made about her body in 2022, and a former policeman who said he tried to raise concerns after he allegedly witnessed Wallace making inappropriate sexual comments at a charity event in 2023. BBC News reported the majority of the 50 people had said he made inappropriate sexual comments, with 11 women accusing him of inappropriate sexual behaviour, such as groping and touching. BBC News also said it has not seen the final Banijay report but it is understood the presenter has been sacked. Earlier on Tuesday, the former greengrocer claimed he had been cleared of the 'most serious and sensational accusations' against him ahead of the report examining his alleged misconduct. In a statement posted on his Instagram account, he said: 'I will not go quietly. I will not be cancelled for convenience. I was tried by media and hung out to dry well before the facts were established. 'The full story of this incredible injustice must be told and it is very much a matter of public interest.' He also said he recognises that some of his humour and language was inappropriate 'at times' and apologised for this. Wallace started out as a greengrocer before he shot to fame fronting BBC shows including Inside The Factory, Supermarket Secrets, as well as MasterChef, Celebrity MasterChef and MasterChef: The Professionals. The most recent series of MasterChef: The Professionals continued to air last year amid allegations against Wallace, but two MasterChef celebrity Christmas specials were pulled from the BBC's schedule in December 2024. At the time, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said she would look to impose new standards in the creative industry amid the allegations. A BBC spokesperson said: 'Banijay UK instructed the law firm Lewis Silkin to run an investigation into allegations against Gregg Wallace. 'We are not going to comment until the investigation is complete and the findings are published.' Banijay UK declined to comment on Wallace's comments.

Kate Middleton dazzles in iconic tiara at first state banquet in almost two years

The Princess of Wales joined the senior members of the Royal Family at Windsor Castle's state banquet to welcome French President Emmanuel Macron this evening Kate Middleton looked exquisite in a glittering tiara tonight as she attended her first state banquet in nearly two years alongside a whole host of famous faces. The Princess of Wales donned the Lover's Knot tiara and red gown with caped back detailing by Sarah Burton for Givenchy as she attended the event alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla and her husband Prince William. Around 160 guests were in attendance for the white tie dinner at Windsor Castle, which is the glitzy highlight of the French state visit. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte are being treated to the grandeur of royal hospitality in the historic St George's Hall. ‌ Kate, who was diagnosed with cancer in early 2024 and announced earlier this year that she is now in remission, last graced a state banquet in November 2023, when the Royal Family welcomed the South Korean president at Buckingham Palace. Just last week, she opened up about her tumultuous journey through cancer recovery, its profound effects on her life, and maintaining a "brave face" during an engagement at Colchester Hospital. ‌ Kensington Palace only confirmed her attendance at tonight's opulent dinner after she fulfilled her Royal obligations marking the commencement of the state visit earlier today, the Mirror reports. Prior to the banquet, William and Kate offered a glimpse into their evening attire by sharing a photo on social media captioned: "Ready for what promises to be a wonderful State Banquet this evening in Windsor." For the first time, Kate donned her Royal Family order from King Charles and accessorised with a lily of the valley embroidered evening clutch. ‌ Joining the festivities tonight are also Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, along with Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. Queen Camilla dazzled in an ivory silk and crepe evening gown by Fiona Clare, complemented by a diamond and sapphire tiara once worn by the late Queen. She also adorned herself with the Legion d'Honneur French sash, Garter Star, and the King's family order. The star-studded dinner was graced not only by royals but also by famous faces from the world of celebrity, including Sir Mick Jagger, who owns a chateau in France. ‌ Other attendees included actress Kirsten Scott Thomas, who resides in France, First Dates star Fred Siriex, a French national, and former Lioness goalkeeper Mary Earps, who recently played for Paris St Germain. She was spotted sharing a laugh and handshake with Prime Minister Keir Starmer before the commencement of the dinner as they engaged in conversation. ‌ In the meantime, the King enlisted his friend and King's Foundation ambassador, French chef Raymond Blanc, to collaborate with the Royal Household in curating the menu, designing the first course and the dessert. Blanc was present in the Windsor kitchens on Tuesday evening, ensuring the dishes were served flawlessly. The menu, penned in French as per state banquet tradition, commenced with a selection of tender summer vegetables from the Gardens of Le Manoir, accompanied by Sage, Raw Tomato and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Dressing. ‌ ‌ This was followed by Supreme of Rhug Estate Chicken with Norfolk Asparagus and Tarragon Cream, and concluded with Iced Blackcurrant Parfait on a Blackcurrant-soaked Sponge with Elderflower Jelly for dessert. Buckingham Palace described the collaboration as being "in the spirit of the Entente Cordial". In a tradition initiated by the King, a unique cocktail named L'entente was crafted for the occasion. This delightful concoction blends British gin with lemon curd and French pastis, garnished with dried French cornflowers and English roses. A selection of French wines was on offer, alongside Taylor's 1977 Vintage Port and a 1948 Grand Champagne Cognac, chosen to commemorate the birth years of both Mr Macron and the King. ‌ The tables were adorned with flowers handpicked from the gardens of Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Windsor Great Park. Post-banquet, these blooms will be delivered to hospices and care homes for the elderly. Following the banquet, guests will adjourn to the Windsor Castle Music Room for a special performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. This dinner concludes a hectic day for the Prince and Princess of Wales who were present to welcome Mr and Mrs Macron at RAF Northolt this morning as they arrived in the UK. ‌ The princess has already showcased diplomatic Royal dressing in honour of the King's guests, opting to wear an ensemble from French fashion house Christian Dior for her daytime engagements. Her earrings were a cherished possession of Diana, Princess of Wales, and the pearl necklace was a piece from the late Queen's collection. The Princess of Wales was seen in a blush pink Christian Dior jacket, the 30 Montaigne Rose Des Vents Bar Jacket from the 2024 collection, paired with a tulle skirt. The piece was reimagined by Maria Grazia Chiuri, drawing inspiration from the original design created by Dior himself in 1947. Kate's stylish hat was designed by Jess Collett. ‌ Join the Daily Record's WhatsApp community here an Upon meeting French leader Mr Macron, who had just disembarked from his plane at RAF Northolt, the princess received a charming air kiss to her hand. Meanwhile, Prince William and the President engaged in a warm handshake and conversation. State banquets have been relocated from the Buckingham Palace ballroom to Windsor for the foreseeable future due to ongoing refurbishment work at the London Royal residence. In recent months, Kate has made a few public appearances, including Trooping the Colour, the annual Order of the Garter service, and a visit to a V&A storage facility in London. However, she was notably absent from Royal Ascot in June as she continues to find a balance between public appearances and her ongoing cancer treatment.
