India orders fuel switch checks on Boeing jets after Air India crash

Wreckage of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane sits on the open ground, outside Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, where it took off and crashed nearby shortly afterwards, in Ahmedabad, India July 12, 2025. REUTERS/Amit Dave Purchase Licensing Rights Listen to article India has ordered its airlines to examine fuel switches on several Boeing models after they came under scrutiny following last month's crash of an Air India jet which killed 260 people. A preliminary report, issued by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau on Saturday, found that the switches had flipped from run position to cutoff shortly after takeoff. The report did not offer any conclusions or apportion blame for the June 12 disaster, but indicated that one pilot asked the other why he cut off fuel, and the second pilot responded that he had not. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued the order Monday to investigate the locking feature on the fuel control switches of several Boeing models, including 787s and 737s. Also Read: Crash cause yet unclear, says Air India CEO The order came after Boeing notified operators that the fuel switch locks on its jets were safe. But it was in line with a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2018, which recommended inspection of the locks to ensure they could not be moved accidentally. Several Indian and international airlines have already begun their own inspections of fuel switches. "It has come to the notice of DGCA, that several operators -- internationally as well as domestic -- have initiated inspection on their aircraft fleet as per the SAIB," DGCA said in a statement. In view of the SAIB, all airline operators of the affected aircraft must complete the inspection by July 21, it added. In a letter to employees on Monday, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the investigation into the crash was ongoing and it would be unwise to jump to "premature conclusions". South Korea was also going to order its airlines to examine fuel switches on Boeing jets, its land and transport ministry said on Tuesday. "The ministry is preparing to order all South Korean airlines that operate Boeing aircraft to examine fuel switches in accordance with the FAA 2018 directives," a spokesperson for the ministry told AFP.

US stocks mostly up after inflation data, Nvidia jumps

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks mostly rose early Tuesday as markets digested a mixed US inflation report while Nvidia jumped after receiving US approval to resume chip sales to China. The US consumer price index was up 2.7 percent from a year ago in June, rising from 2.4 percent in May as energy costs rose. The inflation report 'was better than feared from a headline standpoint, but it was not good enough to put to rest the fear that tariffs will drive higher, and stickier, inflation,' said analyst Patrick O'Hare. About 25 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.2 percent at 44,369.77. Wall Street largely flat as tariff fatigue persists The broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.2 percent to 6,283.88, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 0.7 percent to 20,780.30, adding to its record from Monday. The inflation reading comes as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has continued to advocate a wait-and-see approach to monetary policy in light of President Donald Trump's aggressive trade policy featuring a heavy use of tariffs. Among individual companies, Nvidia jumped 3.7 percent as it announced it will resume sales of its H20 artificial intelligence chips to China, after Washington pledged to remove licensing curbs that had put a stop to exports. Markets also digested better than expected earnings reports from JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo. However, Wells Fargo fell 4.2 percent after lowering its forecast for net interest income, a closely watched benchmark.
