‘A younger crowd': the rise of Britain's early-bird restaurant dining

The Guardian02-05-2025
Previously sitting down for dinner at 5pm usually meant one of three things. You were going to the theatre. You had a toddler. You were of an age where you had a free bus pass. But now we are becoming a nation of early birds; 5pm is the new 8pm and restaurants are adapting accordingly. Special early-evening menus are on the rise.
At Skye Gyngell's Spring restaurant in Covent Garden, a £30 'scratch' menu – featuring dishes made using waste produce such as a moreish bread-and-butter pudding made from yesterday's loaves – is served between 5.30pm and 6.15pm.
Over at Bulrush in Bristol, which opened in 2015 and has held a Michelin star since 2018, diners can enjoy a mini version of its signature tasting menu three days a week at 5.30pm. Instead of £90 for nine courses, you pay £65 for six.
The Portland in London, which has held a Michelin star since 2015, offers four courses for £55 between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. Its standard post-6.30pm tasting menu will set you back a steep £110 while a three course meal from its à la carte costs £89.
Daniel Morgenthau, co-founder of the Woodhead restaurant group, which operates five restaurants including the Portland, said they originally planned to run the early menu for a month in January to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. Thanks to its popularity, six months on it has become a firm fixture.
The cost of living is one of the factors driving demand. Morgenthau describes the Portland menu, which changes monthly, as 'striking a really nice balance between providing the full Portland experience and a lower price point'.
George Livesey, chef and founder of Bulrush, said that prior to 2020 his 8pm tables were taken for casual dining by 'a much younger crowd' than now. Nowadays 90% were booked for special occasions. Part of the reason he introduced his earlier and cheaper menu was to attract the younger demographic back.
'This gives people a chance to experience a decent Michelin-sized tasting menu at a not outrageous price point,' Livesey said.
Even east London hipsters are embracing toddler dining times. At Silo, the world's first zero-waste restaurant in Hackney Wick, 6pm diners can opt for an abbreviated version of its full tasting menu. At Pophams in London Fields, a 6pm booking gets you a £30 three-course set menu featuring dishes such as goat's cheese ravioli and an apple crumble croissant from its bakery.
The trend is also having a knock-on effect on pre-dinner drinking. The Firmdale group, which includes London's the Covent Garden hotel, has introduced a Martini hour. From 5pm to 6pm it serves them shaken or stirred – with free chips.
Hybrid working is another driving factor. Since January, OpenTable, an online reservation site, has seen a 6% rise in bookings for tables between 4pm and 6pm in Britain. Morgenthau describes the 5.30pm slot as 'busier than ever' across his group. The TWaT trend (Tuesday to Thursday in-office work) has also resulted in the traditional end-of-week dinner moving to Thursday.
'We get a lot of couples that come into central London to work,' Morgenthau said. 'They want to meet up before heading home but don't want to be out too late.' This week Livesey had a customer who flagged on their 5.30pm booking that they needed to leave by 8pm to catch a train home.
Morgenthau said: 'What creates a good atmosphere in a restaurant isn't the time. The lovely hum comes from having a full room.' It seems nowadays you're more likely to find that before 8pm.

Popular garage for sale after shock closure – as major firm desperately tries to balance the books

A POPULAR garage has been listed for sale after its shock closure earlier this year - as a major firm desperately attempts to balance the books. ATS Euromaster ran the mechanic shop in Blackburn, but the company was forced to reduce its network of garages from 238 to 152 - as well as lay off staff. 2 2 Back in February, it was revealed that ATS Euromaster - a well established tyre service - had earmarked 86 service centres for possible closure. Just weeks later, all 86 service centres ceased trading and 248 employees were made redundant. The business, which was founded in 1965 and is owned by Michelin, claimed overcapacity, increased costs and sluggish growth as reasons for the closures. One of those 86 centres was the garage in Blackburn, based in Pendle Street. According to the Lancashire Telegraph, the garage has been listed for sale at a guide price of £700,000. The listing said: 'The property comprises a detached steel-framed industrial unit, configured as a seven-bay fitting workshop with ancillary storage, reception, office, staff and customer WCs with tyre storage above the offices. 'Externally, the unit has 12 marked car parking spaces with an additional two disabled spaces. 'The property is located on Pendle Street, which has visibility from Copy Nook (A678), which runs parallel and leads towards Blackburn town centre in the west and east towards J6 of the M65, one mile to the east. 'The site is in a mixed commercial/residential area approximately one mile east of Blackburn town centre.' Other sites in East Lancashire, located in Accrington and Burnley, remain open. Iconic 80s hatchback left to gather dust in a garage for two decades is uncovered... and is worth a lucrative sum ATS Euromaster's latest accounts for the year until December 2023 reported losses of £13.9 million, compared to a loss of £20.6 million in 2022. But their overall turnover for 2023 sat at £165.5million compared to £147.1million in 2022. Back in March, Sun Motors revealed outlets across the country were shutting their doors for good, with confirmed closures in Devon and Cornwall at centres in Plymouth, Exeter and Newton Abbot. Other closures across the UK have also been reported in Brecon, Macclesfield and Carlisle, as well as in Horsham, Worthing, Crawley, Poole and Lymington. What's more, Google lists retailers in Dartford and Bexleyheath as permanently closed, too. In a statement to Sun Motors at the time, a spokesperson for ATS said: "In a UK automotive aftermarket context of overcapacity, increasing costs and sluggish activity and growth, ATS Euromaster intends to review its current operating model and has put in place a proposal to close some non profitable service centres. "Employees impacted by this proposal are under consultation. "In the meantime, our priority is to provide them with the best level of support as possible. "This decision will not impact the high quality of services that we offer to our customers. "We intend that it enables us to concentrate our efforts on strategic levels for sustainable development, including services around ATS mobile capabilities and the shaping of a franchise model already successfully developed in several countries."

A sensible SUV gets a rally-style makeover in the Vauxhall Mokka GSE

Vauxhall's high-performance, all-electric Mokka GSE has got the green light, and it's set to be the fastest battery-electric Vauxhall ever built. The new GSE has been inspired by the Mokka GSE Rally prototype, using much of the tech and styling tweaks previewed by the concept seen earlier this year. The production Mokka GSE packs an impressive 276bhp, promising thrilling performance that Vauxhall says bridges the gap between rallying excitement and everyday usability. With an instant torque delivery of 345Nm, it rockets from standstill to 62mph in just 5.9 seconds, topping out at a lively 124mph. Under the skin, the Mokka GSE features a raft of performance-enhancing technology alongside a 54kWh battery. It uses the same high-voltage components – motor, inverter, battery, and wiring harness – as the rally-spec Mokka GSE Rally. There's a special Torsen multi-plate limited-slip differential designed to keep power delivery sharp and precise. Meanwhile, an upgraded chassis with new axles, double hydraulic shock absorbers, and a rear axle boasting a 189 per cent increase in roll stiffness over the standard Mokka Electric ensures exceptional handling. Stopping power is provided by huge 380mm front brakes sourced from specialists Alcon, gripped by striking yellow four-piston calipers, while aerodynamically optimised 20-inch alloys are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres. With a kerb weight comfortably below 1.6 tonnes – remarkably light for a battery-electric vehicle – the Mokka GSE promises not just performance, but also agility and efficiency. There's no word yet on a maximum range for the high-performance Mokka, but the latest models promise 250 miles, so expect the high-performance model to be slightly below that. The Mokka GSE offers three distinct driving modes tailored to the driver's mood and need. 'Sport' mode unlocks its full potential, delivering maximum power and responsiveness. 'Normal' mode provides balanced everyday driving up to 112mph, while 'Eco' trims performance settings to maximise range from the compact 54kWh lithium-ion battery. Visually, the Mokka GSE looks the part. Exclusive design details inspired by its rally sibling ensure it stands out. A purposeful front spoiler, bespoke rear accents, and unique yellow and black GSE badging highlight the car's motorsport DNA. Inside, Vauxhall hasn't held back either. The cabin is crafted around performance-focused details, dominated by sporty Alcantara-clad GSE seats featuring integrated headrests, stylish yellow stitching, and a distinctive white centre stripe. Matching Alcantara inserts on the doors reinforce the sporty theme. Technology hasn't been overlooked, with the driver facing a customisable 10-inch digital information display that includes specialised GSE performance metrics such as acceleration data, G-force monitoring, and battery management insights. The central colour touchscreen echoes these cues, ensuring the driver is fully informed and engaged. Revealing the new Mokka GSE, Vauxhall's managing director Steve Catlin summed it up nicely: "The new Mokka GSE brings motorsport energy to the streets. Using years of pioneering electric motorsport experience, we've poured our best engineering, power, and handling into a car designed for daily thrills." Pricing and first delivery times aren't known yet, but with the level of technology on offer, we'd expect it to be just above the £37,280 of the electric Mokka Ultimate model, probably coming in at just under £40,000 to avoid the luxury car tax. We'd expect this first GSE model to arrive in showrooms towards the end of this year.

Huge blow as two go-to garages close as major network begins permanently shutting 86 branches

A MAJOR company has shuttered two garages as part of its plan to cull 86 sites. The huge company, which has 238 garages across the country, has been battling overcapacity and increased cost s. 3 3 Two former ATS garages have hit the market, after the company shuttered both sites in Lancashire. The garages in Blackburn and Colne have been closed as ATS Euromaster decreases its number of sites. The brand is reducing its network of 238 garages down to just 151 - in a huge programme of closures involving 86 branches. ATS Euromaster's Blackburn site on Pendle Street has been put on the market for £700,000. The now vacant garage's listing states: "The property comprises of a detached steel framed industrial unit, configured as a seven bay fitting workshop with ancillary storage, reception, office, staff and customer WCs with tyre storage above the offices. 'Externally the unit has 12 marked car parking spaces with an additional two disabled spaces." ATS Euromaster has confirmed that its other Lancashire branches in Accrington, Blackpool, Burnley, Preston and Leyland will not be affected. Rumours had swirled that the Accrington branch would close, after Halfords said it was acting as an 'official partner' to the brand. However, Michelin - ATS Euromaster's owner -has denied this. A spokesperson for the company said: "Halfords have not been in discussions/agreements with ATS and we have not endorsed any of our competitors as official 'partners' with regards staff opportunities." Nissan's gloomy future Over 400 jobs are at risk in ATS Euromaster's cull of its branches which it has blamed on overcapacity, increased costs and sluggish growth. Garages in Devon, Cornwall, Brecon, Macclesfield, Carlisle and a slew of others are slated to close. In a statement, a spokesperson for ATS said: "In a UK automotive aftermarket context of overcapacity, increasing costs and sluggish activity and growth, ATS Euromaster intends to review its current operating model and has put in place a proposal to close some non profitable service centres. "Employees impacted by this proposal are under consultation. "In the meantime, our priority is to provide them with the best level of support as possible. "This decision will not impact the high quality of services that we offer to our customers. "We intend that it enables us to concentrate our efforts on strategic levels for sustainable development, including services around ATS mobile capabilities and the shaping of a franchise model already successfully developed in several countries." Reportedly, Halfords - one of ATS Euromaster's rivals - is offering jobs to people affected by the closures. 3
