GBBO's Paul Hollywood teases new career move as he admits 'I feel guilty'
Paul Hollywood has confessed to feeling a sense of guilt over his soaring success, and admits he can't quite believe how much he's achieved so far.
The Great British Bake Off judge embarked on his career journey at 17, after he left art school to join his father's chain of 12 Breadwinner bakeries as a trainee.
After learning on the job, the 59-year-old became head baker at several prestigious British and international hotels.
His foray into the media world began with Carlton Food Network and Taste, where he co-hosted two television series alongside fellow chef James Martin.
Today, he is most renowned for his role as the longest-serving judge on The Great British Bake Off, including its celebrity editions for Sport Relief, Comic Relief and Stand Up 2 Cancer.
Reflecting on his illustrious career in an interview with The Times, he shared: "I never thought that I'd be doing what I'm doing now.
"When I go back to Liverpool I still see some of the lads I used to work with in the bakery and they're all very proud, but in a weird way I feel guilty.
"It's probably impostor syndrome but I find it difficult. I went on to do what I did when some of these guys are still doing the same job."
In addition to his baking success, Paul has also ventured into motorsport, participating in numerous GT races across the UK.
In recent years, he has embarked on flying lessons in pursuit of a pilot's licence.
"I've done all that racing car c**p but they have always kept me grounded," he added, speaking of his friends.
Paul, who turns 60 next year, humorously said that he's "been in a perpetual midlife crisis" since he was 17.
Hinting at possible new ventures, he added: "Ask my mates. Now I can afford bigger toys but nothing's changed. Next year I might join a band."
Paul shares judging responsibilities on The Great British Bake Off alongside Prue Leith.
Shedding light on his persona both on and off-screen, she told Candis magazine: "The nice thing about the show is that we are just ourselves, although Paul is probably a little bit sterner on telly than he is in real life because in reality, he can be caught comforting a weeping baker.
"He is a kind person - I absolutely adore Paul. He knows more about baking than I do, that's for sure.
"But I've learnt a lot from him, and we do get on really well."
In a conversation with The Times last year, Paul said of his television persona: "That's the guy on Bake Off. That's not the guy at home. Very different.
"I'm an introvert. All my family will tell you that I'm quite shy. So, it's weird that I'm doing this job, but it found me, I didn't hunt for it."

Two I'm A Celebrity legends 'set to return' for epic All Stars series
The I'm A Celebrity… South Africa all stars series is officially returning to ITV later in 2025—and not one but two legendary jungle stars are in talks to come back. Starting in 2024, I'm A Celebrity… South Africa reunites old campmates from the ITV game show. This time, however, they're trading the Australian jungle for the desert. Last series saw the likes of Shaun Ryder, Gillian McKeith, Helen Flanagan, Phil Tufnell, and Jordan Banjo giving up luxuries for a gruelling challenge once more. The competition was ultimately won by Myleene Klass, who had originally finished second during the show's sixth series almost 20 years ago… but now, two more famous faces are coming for her crown. According to reports, beloved King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp is close to signing on the dotted line with ITV bosses. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. As per The Sun, Harry, 78, who became the oldest-ever winner in 2018 and was paid £500,000 for his stint, will fly back out for round two in autumn before the series airs in the New Year. 'It's going to be a real coup,' a source told the paper. 'Harry is TV gold and was first on the list of wannabe celebrity contestants.' The football icon's win in the main series was watched by 11million people, with the nation reduced to tears as he was reunited with his wife, Sandra, on the bridge after, having frequently declared his love for her while in camp. Harry's first run for Jungle champ made him one of the programme's high earners, but the likes of Coleen Rooney and Nigel Farage still come out on top, having received a mega £1.5million for their signings. And Harry's people are remaining tight-lipped on his career plans currently, as a spokesperson for the sports star said in response to the rumours: 'This is speculation.' Meanwhile, there's another huge name already attached to the upcoming South Africa series… and it's Gemma Collins. The Towie star and TV personality, 44, is one of the most treasured personalities on British TV, and ITV is apparently hoping she'll boost viewing figures again this time around. Gemma infamously only managed three days in the Jungle when she was last on the show and made no secret of how much she hated every second. 'People who murder get treated better than this,' she famously said before quitting. 'That's the truth. Even a murderer gets fed three times a day.' Gemma's tears and tantrums gave social media a meme collection that still gets used today, so it's no surprise she's wanted back. A source told The Sun previously: 'She hated it first time round, but knows it would be TV gold for her fans if she gave it another go. 'The discussions could go either way, but signing her would be a huge win for execs.' For Gemma fans hoping she'll give I'm A Celebrity a second try, the recent rumours line up very nicely with comments the Dancing On Ice star made in 2019. Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, she said: 'I will never forget getting the call. Looking back, I don't feel I was ready for that show. I was new to TV; I was the underdog on Towie. 'I wasn't the best-looking girl, I didn't have a model figure, I was this car girl from Romford selling cars. I was being put in the Jungle, and in hindsight, I wasn't ready for it.' She continued: I felt hugely out of my depth—I was petrified. If I was to go back now, I've got more experience. I've got a tougher skin now, and I think that's where the GC came into play. If they asked me back, yes, I'd go back.' Things didn't get off to a good start when Gemma went into the jungle in 2014, firstly refusing to parachute into camp with the rest of her teammates. She then withdrew due to panic attacks and later said that her ex-boyfriend, Alexander Moss, had 'severely beaten' her the night before she joined. The reality star said that ITV advised against her entering at first, but Gemma insisted she didn't want to waste the opportunity of a lifetime. Alexander, now 44, was eventually jailed for 21 months in 2019. More Trending Gemma told the Everything I Know About Me podcast: '[There was] all the embarrassment of like, you know what the TV programmes were saying, 'Gemma Collins left the Jungle, she was hungry, she was this.' And it wasn't my fault. 'I can remember lying in my flat where I lived and just thinking, I just want to die. I haven't done anything wrong. I've left the Jungle because of something that happened to me.' ITV has been contacted for comment. I'm a Celebrity… South Africa will return to ITV1 and ITVX early next year. Got a story? Staggering sum Torvill and Dean have banked revealed as they retire from ice skating
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TORVILL and Dean have scored a Perfect 10 after banking a whopping £5million bonanza as they retire from ice skating. The pair performed together for the final time last weekend as they wrapped up their farewell tour in their hometown of Nottingham. 2 Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean received 12 perfect 6.0 scores to win gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo Credit: Getty - Contributor Fresh accounts for Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's skating company Waikiki Limited show they are in great shape off the ice too, after amassing assets of £5m including £620,000 cash in the bank. The accounts, covering the year to 27 October 2024, showed a huge increase of £542,000 compared to the previous year. That works out at earnings of over £10,000 a week. Christopher, 66, and Jayne, 67, were coaches on Dancing On Ice from 2006 until it ended the first time around in 2014. When the ITV show returned in 2018, they became head judges on the panel alongside Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse. It was confirmed in March that the ITV show had been shelved with no plans for a new series. Former Dancing On Ice pro Alex Murphy suggested Torvill and Dean's plans to retire might have had something to do with the show being axed. She told The Sun: 'Torvill and Dean are national treasures. They are fantastic people, and the most iconic skaters in the skating world as a whole, not just England, and I think Britain sometimes doesn't recognise that, or even notice that they are iconic to the world. 'So it's their show. I just love that. It's their show. So whenever they're ready, I think, then that's when it will go.' The pair, both from Nottingham, first partnered in 1975 and have skated together ever since. Dancing On Ice legend breaks silence on show axe Their competitive career culminated in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo where the 12 perfect 6.0 scores, a feat that secured them the gold medal and captivated 24 million British television viewers. After turning professional, they embarked on successful world tours and created numerous ice shows. A change in Olympic rules allowed them to return for the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, where they earned a bronze medal.
