Germany intends to reverse an increase in air traffic tax unpopular with airlines, something which will be discussed by the coalition government as part of budget considerations for 2026, the Bild newspaper reported on Monday.International airlines have long complained that flying to and from German airports is too expensive and threatened to reduce their presence in the country, with budget carrier Ryanair among the loudest critics."The increase in air traffic tax must be cancelled, and charges at German airports must also be reduced," the newspaper quoted Christoph Ploss, the government's tourism policy coordinator , as saying. The transport ministry will push for a reversal of the tax increase, according to the report. Shares in Lufthansa spiked briefly after the news by 2.2 per cent . The coalition government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to ease the financial burden on aviation, including by reversing the higher air traffic tax, but had not given a timeline in its coalition agreement.German Finance Minster Lars Klingbeil is expected to present the draft 2026 budget next week, with companies watching closely for promised relief despite pressure on state coffers from ramped-up spending on defence and economic uncertainty. The air traffic tax increase came into effect in May 2024, raising the surcharge for short-haul flights from 12.48 euros per ticket to 15.53 euros.Ploss said the previous government, led by the Social Democrats who are now junior partners in the current coalition, had made holidays more expensive for millions of Germans."A well-deserved holiday in Mallorca must not become unaffordable," he added.A reversal "would be a first and urgent step in the right direction," Ralph Beisel, head of the ADV airports association, said in a statement to Reuters. "A reorientation of aviation policy is needed in our country."

Why Learning Foreign Languages Is the New Career Power Move for Indian Youth

India PR Distribution New Delhi [India], August 1: In today's globalized world, the ability to communicate in more than one language is not just a skill--it's a career accelerator. As India's young workforce continues to compete on a global stage, learning foreign languages such as German, French, Japanese, and Spanish has become one of the smartest moves for career growth, overseas education, and international job opportunities. Foreign Languages Open Global Career Doors From multinational corporations to international universities, the demand for multilingual professionals is on the rise. Countries like Germany, Japan, and France are actively welcoming Indian students and skilled professionals. In many cases, proficiency in the native language is either a requirement or a strong advantage. For example, German companies operating in India often prefer candidates who can speak and understand German. Similarly, Japan offers a large number of technical internships and long-term employment options for Indians with Japanese language skills. The ability to communicate in the local language not only improves the quality of professional interactions but also makes integration into society smoother. Boosting Employability and Salary Potential Hiring managers consistently place language skills among the top desirable traits in global candidates. Bilingual and multilingual individuals are often offered better job roles and salary packages. In sectors like hospitality, aviation, international business, IT, and translation services, foreign language proficiency is a competitive edge. Students who pursue international education also benefit greatly. Whether applying to German public universities, enrolling in French business schools, or preparing for Japanese corporate internships, language skills strengthen a student's profile. Many institutes are now helping bridge this gap. The Indian Institute of Foreign Languages offers structured programs in German, French, Japanese, Spanish, and English--both online and offline--making it easier for students across India to gain certification and fluency. India's Youth are Catching On More Indian students and professionals are recognizing the value of foreign languages. Enrollments in language certification programs have increased significantly over the past few years, especially among students preparing for study abroad, jobs in Europe or Japan, and global business ventures. With the rise of digital learning, students from cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and even Tier 2 towns can now access high-quality language courses from the comfort of their homes. Institutes offering weekend and evening batches have made it easier for working professionals to learn without disrupting their daily routines. A Lifelong Skill With Endless Benefits Beyond careers, learning a foreign language also improves memory, cognitive flexibility, and cross-cultural understanding. It builds confidence, sharpens communication, and makes international travel more rewarding. In an era where remote jobs, overseas migration, and global networking are common, the ability to speak an additional language is no longer optional--it's essential. Where to Begin? For Indian youth looking to get started, it's important to choose the right course and certification. Most global employers and universities recognize international language tests such as Goethe-Zertifikat (German), JLPT (Japanese), DELF/DALF (French), and DELE (Spanish). Institutions like the Indian Institute of Foreign Languages not only prepare students for these exams but also provide career guidance, flexible timing, and access to native-speaking trainers and online learning tools. Conclusion In a world that's becoming more interconnected every day, foreign language skills are the bridge between Indian talent and global opportunity. Whether your goal is to study in Germany, work in Japan, or run a business with international clients, speaking a second language gives you a powerful head start. For India's young professionals and students, learning a foreign language may be the smartest career move they make this decade. Hamas armed wing releases video of Israeli-German hostage held in Gaza

The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas has released a new video showing an Israeli-German man taken hostage during the October 2023 attack that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. The six-minute video, shared on Thursday, features the hostage, identified as Rom Braslavski, speaking in Hebrew and calling on the Israeli government to help secure his release. He is also shown watching Arabic-language television reports on the worsening food crisis in Gaza. AFP and several Israeli outlets identified the man as Braslavski, a dual national from Jerusalem. He had been working as a security agent at the Nova music festival, one of the sites attacked during the October assault. At the start of the footage, Hamas's armed wing claims it has lost contact with Braslavski, repeating a statement it made last week. This suggests the video may have been recorded earlier. A previous video of Braslavski was released on 16 April. Witnesses say that before being abducted, he helped rescue several festival attendees during the attack. According to the Israeli military, 251 people were taken hostage during the October 2023 raid into southern Israel. Of those, 49 remain in Gaza, including 27 believed to be dead. Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza following the attack. A temporary ceasefire earlier this year, from January 19 to March 17, led to the release of 33 hostages eight of whom were dead in exchange for the release of around 1,800 Palestinian prisoners. Braslavski's video was released by a group designated as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.

Israeli Hostage Shown Gaza Starvation Footage, Palestinian Islamic Jihad Releases Video

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group on Thursday posted a video of an Israeli-German hostage - Rom Braslavski, who had been held captive in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, an attack after which war sparked in the territory. In the video, Braslavski, 21, can be seen identifying himself and pleading with the Israeli government to secure his release. He looks pale and thin, lying on the ground in Gaza and is seen watching news footage of the hunger crisis in Gaza. This is not the first video of him released by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. They had released a previous video of him on April 16. In the video, he complained of an illness that made his entire body itch, and he had appealed to US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get him released. Braslavski was a security agent at the Nova music festival when he was abducted. Before he was abducted, he managed to rescue several festival-goers, witnesses who escaped, recall. The group is considered a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union. "They managed to break Rom. Even the strongest person has a breaking point," his family said in a statement released by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. "Rom is an example of all the hostages. They must all be brought home now." According to the Israeli military, of the 251 people abducted from Israel, 49 are still held in Gaza, 27 of whom are dead. The Israeli military only posts hostage videos if the hostage's family permits. "People are speaking a lot about what is happening in Gaza, about the hunger, and I ask all those who are speaking about hunger: Did you see our Rom? He doesn't receive food, and he doesn't receive medicine," the family wrote in a statement issued by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. "He is simply forgotten there. They managed to break Rom. Even the most resilient person has their breaking point," the statement read. Israel has been fighting Hamas in Gaza since the kidnappings, but a truce from January 19 to March 17 allowed the return of 33 hostages to Israel, eight of them dead, in exchange for the release of approximately 1,800 Palestinians from Israeli jails. Others were released under a previous truce in 2023.
