Gold prices soar in Jordan, reshaping investment trends

Zawya28-04-2025

AMMAN — Gold prices in Jordan have risen "sharply" since the beginning of the year, mirroring international trends pushing the precious metal to record highs, according to industry stakeholders.
According to the General Syndicate of Owners of Trade and Jewellery Shops, the price of 21-karat gold, the most popular among Jordanians, has reached JD68 per gramme for selling and JD66 for buying. Meanwhile, prices for 24-karat, 18-karat, and 14-karat gold have climbed to JD78.1, JD60.6, and JD45.9 per gramme, respectively.
President of the Jordanian Jewellers Association Rabhi Allan said that the 7-gramme Rashadi gold coin now stands at JD474, while the 8-gramme English gold coin is priced at JD542. He noted that international gold trading closed last Friday at $3,318 per ounce — the highest level on record.
Amid the ongoing economic uncertainty, demand for gold coins remains strong, with many Jordanians viewing them as a safe haven investment and a secure method to preserve wealth.
Allan noted that Rashadi and English gold coins, in particular, have grown increasingly popular among buyers looking to shield their savings from market volatility.
Despite the surge in gold prices, gold coins remain widely available in the local market, and jewellery shop owners are encouraging consumers to consider investing during this period.
However, the soaring prices are placing a heavy burden on young couples preparing for marriage, as gold remains a deeply symbolic part of Jordanian wedding traditions, especially in preparing the Mahr, or bridal dowry.
Many couples are now revising their wedding budgets, scaling back gold purchases, or even postponing their wedding plans altogether.
'I have always dreamed of a wedding with all the traditions, but with these gold prices, we are being forced to compromise on everything,' said Leen Bakir, who plans to marry later this year. 'Even a simple gold set feels out of reach now.'
Jewellers across the Kingdom are witnessing the strain firsthand. "We see more couples trying to negotiate smaller sets," said Salim Samara, a jeweller in Wehdat, noting that many are opting for simpler rings or lower-carat gold options to reduce costs.
Sector experts attribute the price hikes to international gold market volatility combined with local inflationary pressures.
Traditionally, the wedding season boosts demand for jewellery, but this year, rising prices are dampening purchasing power and changing long-held customs, according to stakeholders.
As wedding season approaches its peak, the impact of climbing gold prices extends beyond economics, reshaping an integral part of Jordan's social and cultural fabric.

TF1 to launch TF1+ streaming platform in 22 African countries

The deal is also part of Belmer's strategy to transform the group's AVOD platform, TF1+, into a global brand, with its African launch set for the end of the month. French broadcaster TF1 has announced plans to expand its free ad-supported streaming service, TF1+, into 22 French-speaking African countries starting June 30, 2025. This strategic expansion follows the platform's previous rollouts in Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland, marking a significant step in TF1's ambition to become a dominant entertainment player across the French-speaking world. Speaking to Variety, TF1 CEO Rodolphe Belmer said the goal is to position TF1+ as the leading entertainment platform in these new markets. The move places TF1 in direct competition with Canal+, which already has a strong presence in Francophone Africa and is currently extending its footprint into English-speaking markets through its acquisition of MultiChoice. In addition to geographic expansion, TF1 is set to introduce a new micro-payment model for TF1+, aimed at diversifying its revenue streams beyond traditional linear and digital advertising. Inspired by mobile gaming economics, the system will allow viewers to choose between ad-supported and ad-free viewing options on a per-episode basis. This will launch in France on September 1. As Belmer explained, audiences will have the flexibility to watch flagship programmes such as Koh-Lanta either with commercials or without, depending on their preference. TF1's push for innovation also made headlines last week with the surprise announcement that Netflix subscribers in France will soon have access to live TF1 channels and on-demand content from TF1+ directly through the Netflix platform. Although Belmer declined to offer specific details on the partnership, he confirmed that the deal will help extend TF1's reach within the advertising market. With these moves, TF1 is signaling a clear intent to broaden its international footprint and adapt to evolving viewer preferences while tapping into new monetisation models and strategic partnerships.

chatlyn opened its Dubai office to strengthen its presence in the Middle East

Post Views: 34 chatlyn recently opened its Dubai office to strengthen its presence in the Middle East. chatlyn, the AI communication hub transforming how hotels engage with guests across every touchpoint, announced it has secured €8 million in Series A funding led by Smedvig Ventures. With this investment, chatlyn aims to accelerate its mission to become 'the AI brain for hotels'—an intelligent system that supports hotel operations (front desk, reservations, marketing, and guest services) and autonomously optimizes guest communications to maximize revenue and satisfaction. In today's world, you lose potential guests when you don't respond immediately,' said Nicolas Vorsteher, CEO and Co-founder of chatlyn. 'We want to bring back meaningful conversations to the hospitality industry and free up staff's valuable time for in-person guest interactions. We're building the AI brain for hotels – an AI that understands hospitality context, speaks 35+ languages fluently, and learns each property's unique voice to deliver experiences that feel both personal and effortless.' 'chatlyn has fundamentally transformed our guest experience from reactive to proactive,' said Garry Loefgen, Head of Commercial at InterContinental Vienna. 'Our AI assistant handles over 70% of inquiries instantly in perfect German, English, Arabic, and many other languages, while our team focuses on creating magical moments. It's like having a multilingual concierge that never sleeps and gets smarter every day.' The round included participation from AnyDesk founder Andreas Burike, Austrian transport leader Blaguss, business angel Mathias Hiebeler (former owner of Grob aircraft, acquired by Helsing), and strategic hospitality angels. The company also received an innovation grant from the FFG, Austria's national funding institution for industry-related research and development.
