Four arrested under Goonda Act, 31 externed from Dharwad district
Addressing a press conference in Hubballi on Wednesday, Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar said that four history sheeters have been arrested under the provisions of Goonda Act (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum-Grabbers Act, 1985) and sent to prisons in Dharwad, Kalaburagi and Mysuru.
He said that the arrested history sheeters are involved in various crimes and facing the charge of murder, assault and others.
'Accused Sagar Lakkundi has 13 cases against him, Manjunath alias Scientist Manjay has 41 cases, Dawood Nadaf has 20 cases and Laxman alias Laxman Gabya has 13 cases against him. After following due procedure and verification, they have been booked under the Goonda Act,' he said.
The Police Commissioner said that earlier in the year, they externed 52 history sheeters to different districts and now they have externed 31 history sheeters who are facing the charge of murder, rioting and violation of Arms Act.
These externed history sheeters will have to report to specific police stations in the districts of Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Chamarajnagar and Dakshina Kannada.
To a query, Mr. Shashikumar clarified that as the order on externment can be subjected to judicial review, it was passed after due diligence.
To another query, he clarified that it is a continuous process and now, they are reviewing the activities of those involved in organised crimes in the last couple of months. They will take appropriate action after thorough verification.

Offences related to religion go up by 65 per cent in four years
BENGALURU: Offences related to religion have witnessed a significant increase in the state, rising by 64.87% from 208 cases in 2021 to 345 cases in 2024. As per data available with State Crime Records Bureau, until May this year, a total of 123 such cases were reported across the state. Cases of communal and religious riots also saw a 133.31% increase, rising from 9 in 2021 to 21 in 2024. Experts say that misinformation on social media, a politically polarised environment, and long-standing religious or caste-based tensions in certain districts have contributed to the rise in such incidents. Government initiatives like the formation of an anti-communal wing or a special action force are yet to make any impact. Offences related to religion are being booked under various sections and are further categorised into caste-based, communal, linguistic, regional, religious, and other issues. Speaking to TNIE, a serving police commissioner in the state reiterated that misinformation on social media, political polarisation, and historical religious or caste tensions are key contributors. 'The police have failed to take preventive actions, such as arresting the accused or invoking the Goonda Act against troublemakers,' the commissioner said. 'Religious violence, riots triggered by social media' The commissioner added that at times, arrests are made in a discriminatory manner — an individual posting something on social media might be arrested swiftly, but if the person involved is a politician, action is often delayed. 'If any religious or communal issue arises, there is often direct political party backing on both sides. Political patronage for communal offenders, regardless of which party is in power, is not a new phenomenon in the state,' the officer said. He said that riots and other religion-related issues could have been prevented through better intelligence gathering. 'The state intelligence department and local intelligence units are weak. With Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections around the corner, political parties and their cadres are becoming active,' the officer added. While the government has announced several special measures like an anti-communal wing and a special action force, the IPS officer said these initiatives remain on paper, often announced as reactive measures. The government must encourage strict against offenders.

Residential schools in Karnataka did well in SSLC exams-1
Hubballi: While the overall pass percentage in SSLC exams-1 results was 62.3%, as many as 788 residential schools performed well in SSLC results with an overall score of 91%. The residential schools function under Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS). Though all these schools have done well, Belagavi division topped the state with an average of 94.4%. Mysuru division stood second with 92.6%, and Bengaluru third with 90.6% in the overall performance. Kalaburagi division's is the lowest at with 87.9%. 4 beat constables suspended for laxity during anti-encroachment drive
Varanasi: Four beat constables were suspended for negligence during a foot patrol and anti-encroachment campaign in the city area on Thursday. In view of upcoming festivals and traffic management, a foot patrol and anti-encroachment campaign were led by police commissioner Mohit Agarwal from Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham area to Godowlia and Dashashwamedh Ghat. For negligence in the anti-encroachment campaign, suspension action was taken against four beat constables, including Yogendra Yadav, Pintu Saroj, Manoj Kumar, and Nitesh Kumar. The police authorities said that FIRs are being registered against shopkeepers and encroachers on roads and sidewalks, and actions are being taken during the campaign. More than 200 FIRs were registered against encroachers as part of the campaign. Legal action under the Goonda Act and Gangsters Act will be taken against those with more than two FIRs against them.
