Manipur government orders probe into bus incident, Meitei group calls 48-hour strike
The Manipur government on Wednesday (May 21, 2025) ordered a probe into Tuesday's (May 20, 2025) incident in which armed forces personnel allegedly made a team of journalists and information officials cover 'Manipur State Transport' displayed on a bus they were travelling in.
The journalists and officials were on their way to covering the State Tourism Department-organised Shirui Lily Festival in the Ukhrul district, about 80 km from the capital, Imphal. The incident triggered anger in the Meitei-majority Imphal Valley, where an influential NGO called a 48-hour general strike and demanded the resignation of Manipur's Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Chief Secretary P.K. Singh, and Director General of Police Rajiv Singh.
The order issued by the Chief Secretary read, 'The Governor of Manipur is pleased to constitute an inquiry committee to examine the facts and circumstances around the (bus) incident…'
The inquiry will be conducted by a two-member committee, comprising Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar and Secretary (Information Technology) Th. Kirankumar Singh. The panel has been asked to look into lapses, if any, suggest measures to prevent the recurrence of such a situation, and submit its report within 15 days.
Protesting the incident, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) announced the 48-hour shutdown from Wednesday (May 21, 2025) midnight. The group primarily represents the Meitei community.
Apart from the resignation of the three top officers at the helm of affairs in Manipur, the COCOMI demanded an apology from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. It held them responsible for the incident, which 'undermined the identity of Manipur, its name, pride and respect.'
The COCOMI also accused them of surrendering the pride, dignity, and legitimacy of the State to the 'narco-terrorist groups which have been openly threatening the people of Manipur.' It pointed out that no action was taken against a Kuki student leader and Kuki armed 'village volunteers' who had allegedly threatened Meiteis against attending the iconic festival organised after a two-year gap due to the ethnic conflict that broke out in May 2023.
The incident occurred at the Gwaltabi checkpoint in the Imphal East district, about 25 km from Imphal. A group of 20 journalists were travelling to the Naga-majority Ukhrul district to cover the five-day festival, which the Governor inaugurated on Tuesday (May 20, 2025).
The COCOMI accused the personnel of the Army's 4 Mahar Regiment guarding the checkpoint of 'erasing' the name of Manipur from the bus. The Army has not reacted to the allegation.
Leaders of Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the State were on the same page in criticising the bus incident, demanding punishment for those responsible.
The Shirui Lily Festival was expected to bring a semblance of normalcy in the State scarred by a long-drawn conflict between the Kuki-Zo tribal people and the Meiteis. The conflict, which broke out on May 3, 2023, killed more than 250 people and displaced some 60,000.

According to local media in Niger, unidentified gunmen attacked an Army unit guarding the construction site in the Dosso region, about 130 km from the capital Niamey. 'In a heinous terror attack on July 15 in Niger's Dosso region, two Indian nationals tragically lost their lives and one was abducted,' the Indian Embassy in Niamey said in a post on X. Sheela Devi alleged that the company has made no visible efforts to help secure her husband's release. 'We have three young children and elderly parents who are in shock after hearing about his abduction,' she said, appealing to the Indian government for intervention. She has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh to ensure her husband's safe return. She has also met Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan, who assured her that the matter would be taken up with the Indian Embassy in Niger and the Ministry of External Affairs. 'My humble request is to please bring my husband home safely,' she said.

Kuki-Zo road project sparks bandh call in Manipur's Naga-majority areas
Guwahati: An indefinite bandh for movement of Kuki-Zo people through Naga-inhabited areas in Manipur has been declared by the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC) since Friday, primarily to protest the 'unauthorised construction' of the 'Tiger Road'. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 'Tiger Road (also known as German Road)' is a voluntary road project initiated by Kuki-Zo organisations to connect Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts. The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has appealed to the Naga body to immediately lift the bandh and allow the safe passage of Kuki-Zo people through the Naga-inhabited areas of the state. It said in the aftermath of the outbreak of ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023, the Kuki-Zo people "have been left with no viable option but to seek alternate routes for movement, as transit through Meitei-dominated areas has become unsafe and impossible. " "We firmly believe that any misunderstandings or grievances can and should be addressed through peaceful dialogue and mutual respect," the KZC stated. The bandh supporters have imposed road blocks at several strategic points at Makhan in Kangpokpi district, Tongjei Maril (Old Cachar Road), Dolang Chiru, Tupul to Noney Road, Tupul-Noney Junction and Longsai-Khoupum Road in Noney district, disrupting the movement of people and vehicles. The FNCC contends that the construction of the German and Tiger roads through Naga ancestral lands without their consent is a "blatant disregard of our traditional ownership and rights over our land". The FNCC also insists on the dismantling of Suspension of Operations (SoO) camps of Kuki militant groups, asserting that their presence near Naga areas poses a security threat and constitutes an illegal settlement in Naga territory. Sailor, missing after attack on ship, in Yemen govt's custody
Kottayam: A Kayamkulam native, a crew member of bulk carrier ship Eternity C and sailing under the Liberian flag, who went missing in the Red Sea following a missile attack by Houthi rebels contacted his family. Anilkumar Raveendran, 45, a security officer of the ship, contacted his wife Sreeja Anil over the phone in the early hours of Saturday. According to Sreeja, her husband said that he was safe and was in the custody of Yemeni govt. He, along with 10 others on the ship, was rescued by a fishing boat. The fishermen handed them over to Yemen coast guard. Currently, nine people, including Raveendran, are in a hotel in Yemen while two are in hospital. Sreeja passed on the message to Indian embassy officials and the ship operators. "He should be brought to India at the earliest," she said. Raveendran, who retired from the Army as naib subedar, joined as a security officer on the ship in Feb 2025. The ship was attacked in the Red Sea while returning from Somalia on July 7. The ship sank in the attack. Two Indians, including Raveendran, were reported to be on the ship. Sreeja said a Kanyakumari native who escaped had reached home earlier. She suspected that Raveendran was being held captive by the Houthis. TNN
