
Creativity in the era of AI: a new frontier for education
'Do Schools Kill Creativity? a famous TED Talk by Sir Ken Robinson, is one worth listening to again and again. In his talk, he compellingly argues how academic institutions may unintentionally suppress the creative instincts of young minds. As members of an academic institute, we often reflect on how prevailing practices in schools and colleges can negatively influence young minds.
The intense focus on achieving a high-grade point average (GPA) frequently discourages students from nurturing their creative thinking and abilities. Creative thinking is a precious gift of the human mind. Children are naturally imaginative, curious, and eager to explore. Yet, only a few manage to hold onto that curiosity as they grow, while most lose it under the influence of societal expectations and academic pressures.
Today, in a world shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and countless tools designed to simplify our tasks, a burning question arises: how is this technology influencing our ability to think creatively?
As academia begins to embrace this new wave of technology, debates are surfacing about its influence on students' creative abilities. While tech companies promote AI tools as powerful enablers of creativity, skeptics raise strong concerns about their potential to dull the creative edge of young minds. Because these tools offer a quick way to learn concepts, complete assessments, and draft reports, students are not bothered about the possible long or short term impacts of AI on their creative thinking. To them, AI is a powerful, Swiss-knife-like instrument that handles much of their workload in an instant. These AI tools are appealing and versatile, often helping them finish homework so they can enjoy more leisure time with their mobile phones.
With the widespread availability of AI tools, we've found ourselves frequently discussing how these technologies might impact students' cognitive abilities. While we lack concrete evidence for now, we often reflect on the noticeable shifts in their habits and learning routines.
One day, we decided to involve young engineering students of our class in an experiment. It was not a classical experiment with lots of apparatus but a simple one using a photo of a single Lego block.
The moment we asked them to write as many uses of this single block as they could, the room suddenly filled with excitement. They never thought about it earlier. We gave them about three to four minutes to write down the uses. We also asked them to work individually without discussing among themselves.
The results were compelling. To analyze them, we turned to the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT), focusing on two key dimensions: 'Fluency' and 'Originality.' Fluency refers to the number of distinct ideas generated, while originality reflects how novel or unique those ideas are. The average number of ideas for the use of a single block of Lego by the students came to be 4.4. Meanwhile, we calculated the average originality score of the ideas to be 3.1. A total of 39 students participated in the experiment.
We graded students to be high performers if they scored above average in either dimension. Among them, 3 females and 5 males (around 20%) demonstrated both high fluency and high originality. 1 female and 3 males (approximately 10%) showed high fluency but low originality. A group of 1 female and 4 males (about 13%) exhibited low fluency but high originality.
The remaining 5 females and 17 males (roughly 57%) scored low in both dimensions. We were expecting to have more students in the high performers group, but instead we got the opposite. These students were in the final year of their engineering studies. As we observed their responses, Sir Ken Robinson's words came rushing back. Has academia played a role in stifling the creative thinking of these bright young minds? The question hit us suddenly.
Following the initial activity, we asked students to explore the uses of a Lego block using any generative AI tool of their choice. They noted the AI-generated ideas on paper and were also instructed to provide the name of the tool used, along with the prompts they entered.
ChatGPT emerged as the most popular tool. We then assessed the AI-generated responses using the same TTCT criteria: fluency and originality. The average fluency score rose to 8.8, while the originality score was 3.4, only slightly above the students' average of 3.1. These findings align with research by the Harvard Business School team (Jacqueline N. Lane and colleagues), which highlights AI's strength in generating a high volume of ideas due to its foundation in large language models (LLMs) trained on vast datasets.
However, since originality is measured by the practicality and novelty of ideas, the narrow margin in scores suggests that human creativity is still very much competitive. While we acknowledge the potential for bias in our assessment of originality, the results overall showed AI slightly outperforming humans in generating varied uses for the Lego block.
Humans are naturally creative, while AI models are trained to mimic creativity. Companies are working tirelessly to refine these models as AI products flood the market. Machines are learning at a remarkable pace, but human creative thinking must be continually nurtured through intentional mental engagement to address real-world challenges.
With the widespread and frequent use of AI tools, there's a growing risk of overdependence. What if the belief that AI is superior and quicker in solving problems becomes deeply ingrained in younger generations? The outcome could be troubling: complete reliance on AI with little effort invested in cultivating their own creative abilities.
As academicians, we must ensure that students see AI as a collaborative partner, one that enhances, rather than replaces, their ability for divergent thinking. They should experience both types of learning environments: one where they work creatively without AI, and another where they leverage AI in problem-solving tasks.
Beyond making them AI literate, we have to guide them in avoiding total dependence on this technology. Striking this balance is no easy task; it demands deliberate and sustained effort. Reflecting on Sir Ken Robinson's TED Talk, we believe that academic discourse should move beyond asking whether AI kills creativity. Instead, it should focus on how academia can responsibly harness AI while nurturing human imagination. The larger, more pressing question is: Are we academicians ready to take on this responsibility?

However, it will soon reopen as a bar and accommodation called On the River after having gone through an extensive clean up operation and refurbishment work. The father and son team who took it on, Mike and Michel Catris, have opened up on the huge task they had on their hands to turn the building around. Article continues below "It was rough. We had 42 mattresses, used mattresses that were like poppadoms that we had to get rid of. "There was graffiti all over the walls. It was like something out of... a film where they've gone into a crack den. It was massive crack den." Michel's father, Mike, said the team who had to clean up the the property after it was bought collected 14 buckets of needles. He said: "It was worse than you'd ever seen on TV." Michel added: "You were coming out of here and you were itching. It was pretty rough. It was almost like a hazmat suit job. "We were scrubbing everything back to bear bones, getting everything to a state where we were happy bringing people in here to work on it. It would have been impossible. "We've got to remind ourselves sometimes how bad it was and actually how far we've come." The building was sold in 2023 after being going on the market for £1m. It has been a long road for it to get to where it is currently, but the new owners said they hope they can now bring some positivity to the area. On the River is situated on the River Taff and looks out onto the Principality Stadium (Image: John Myers ) Michel said: "A lot of the comments we had when we literally first started breaking ground on it was 'oh, you're not turning it flats are you?' or 'you're not turning it into a big high rise'. "I think as soon as we turned around and said... it is going to be a bar and a communal space and a cafe, they were so behind getting something off the ground because of the situation after Nos Da closed. "It's been such an eyesore and a bit of a black mark on the community." They will then open the bar, initially just for Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5, in time for the Oasis gigs in Cardiff. The coffee shop will also open from this weekend, but it will remain open. The bar will then reopen for the Stereophonics concerts on Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12 and remain open thereafter. Mike and Michel said they are also exploring the possibility of having events like live music, comedy nights, quiz nights and open mic nights. During the day and quieter hours, the ambition for the site is to host running clubs, cycling clubs and dementia cafes. Mike said: "It's all well and good trying to make a killing on your weekends, but we want to feed back to the community during the week as well. Both father and son are experienced businessmen, but neither have taken on something in the hospitality industry. Mike said: "It's still daunting. It's something I've never done before. "I'm a civil construction engineer by trade, but I've gone off as a developer into care homes and mental health units which I sold off some years ago. Michel added: "It's landed on our laps a little bit. We had a previous business partner whose idea was the accommodation and the pub. "We loved the accommodation idea and he had to really convince us on the pub side of things and we've since parted ways but we were so far gone in it, we inherited that as an idea. Michigan football's latest 2026 commits: Lee, Robinson lead CBS Sports ratings
The Wolverines have been on a recruiting heater in the past week-plus, and they're showing no signs of slowing down. Friday saw Michigan football add two commitments, with one being Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee, one of the maize and blue's top overall offensive targets in the 2026 recruiting cycle. But, as CBS Sports notes, not all commitments are created equal. And the network has created a new way to evaluate pledges to determine just how impactful their additions might be. With what CBS Sports is calling a 'commitment impact score,' the network weighs the roster boost, how much momentum the commitment creates, and how much the recruit fits into a team's culture. Then, they're scored from 1-10, with a 9-10 being a 'game-changer,' a 7-8 being a 'strong add,' a 5-6 being 'solid depth,' and 1-4 being 'low impact.' Starting with the newest pledge, the aforementioned Lee, the Wolverines got what CBS Sports calls a strong add. 4-star OT Malakai Lee commits to Michigan Our eval: Strong add (8/10) Michigan's offensive line had been the gold standard during the Jim Harbaugh era and the program has recruited well enough for that to continue. The recruiting bubble seems to have popped for Michigan as several have either joined or will soon join the Wolverine's 2026 recruiting class. His potential is insane as he has good size and a verified 85 inch wingspan. But Lee committed about 10-15 minutes after another was added to the class, with Richmond (Va.) Huguenot three-star linebacker Markel Dabney flipping from SMU to Michigan football just before the announcement in Hawaii. Of course, Dabney isn't quite as highly regarded as Lee, with CBS Sports noting him as 'modest,' but it's still a good addition from the network's perspective. 3-star LB Markel Dabney flips from SMU to Michigan Our eval: Solid Depth (5/10) Markel Dabney is a modest addition, but he did flip from SMU. His official visit list is not littered with the nation's top programs, but Michigan has done well identifying and developing 3-star recruits over the years like Kris Jenkins, Mike Sainristil, DJ Turner, Mike Morris and others. The timing is good because the Virginia native is a part of a big recruiting run for the Wolverines. As CBS Sports notes, just because talent evaluators aren't all in line calling Dabney a home run doesn't mean that Michigan football won't develop him in a way that is beyond impactful. And certainly, the Wolverines are excited about Dabney's potential in Wink Martindale's system. The new scoring table also covers some other recent Michigan commitments. Offensive lineman Marky Walbridge got a score of five, solid depth, while wide receiver Zion Robinson got a nine -- 'game changer.' The Michigan wide receiver room received a significant talent upgrade with the addition of Robinson, the sixth-ranked wide receiver and No. 71 overall prospect in the 2026 class who chose the Wolverines over the likes of Miami, Nebraska and Stanford. The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder is an explosive athlete who posted multiple sub-11-second 100-meter times as a sophomore in 2024 - that same year, he won the Texas 6A state title in the high jump (6-8). This marks the second straight cycle that the Wolverines have gone into the Lone Star State to land an elite wideout (Katy Jordan's Andrew Marsh was the No. 82 overall prospect and No. 13 wide receiver in 2025). We expect Robinson and Marsh to be great targets for Bryce Underwood in the future. Four-star defensive tackle Titan Davis also was evaluated and got a score of eight, strong add.

Egyptian, French FMs stress importance of restoring Gaza ceasefire, ensuring humanitarian aid access
CAIRO, June 27 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stressed the urgent need to restore the ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid, as living conditions in the besieged Palestinian enclave continue to deteriorate. Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry Tamim Khallaf, said that during a phone call on Thursday, the two ministers discussed recent developments in Gaza, following the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel. During the telephone conversation, they addressed key regional developments and explored avenues to further strengthen ties between Egypt and France. Abdelatty highlighted the genuine efforts spearheaded by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to swiftly secure a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, underscoring the critical role of the international community in halting Israeli aggression in both Gaza and the West Bank. The ministers also addressed the issue of Palestinian state recognition, Barrot updated his Egyptian counterpart on preparations for the upcoming high-level international conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, which aims to promote a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the implementation of the two-state solution. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's firm commitment to a just and sustainable solution, grounded in the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with Al Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as its capital. The spokesperson added that the two ministers concurred on the necessity for both Iran and Israel to fully comply with the ceasefire, stressing the importance of concrete de-escalation measures to pave the way for renewed political and diplomatic initiatives.
