Byrd joined WMM in 2018 after serving as managing director of the Joyful Heart Foundation, where she led a campaign to end a backlog of thousands of untested rape kits in police storage across the U.S. Under her leadership, WMM has supported initiatives ranging from health care equity to climate change, focusing on how these issues affect women and girls. Members have also helped fund films that promote women's rights, including the 2024 Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill A Tiger, which told the story of a father's fight to prosecute the men who sexually assaulted his 13-year-old daughter in rural India.
In 2023, WMM members donated $157 million, with 85% of members donating more than their initial pledge of $1 million, with a median increase of $3 million. 'My passion is building a really strong, connected funding system for the movement for women's rights,' Byrd says. 'Our role is to ensure that their voices and perspectives and needs are heard.'

‘Ferocious little demon' of a dog floating in the Arthur Kill rescued by NJ Troopers
The New Jersey Devil appears to have a sidekick. A 'ferocious little demon' of a dog was rescued by Garden State troopers after they found the pugnacious pooch floating on a piece of junk in the Arthur Kill on Friday morning. Trooper Michael Buchell and his partner Shane McClafferty were responding to a call of a distressed dog when they noticed some unusual movement in the water in Elizabeth, NJ State Police said on Facebook. NJ State Police That's when they found a very cute and – and very angry – long haired rat terrier mix struggling against the current and floating on what appears to be a discarded piece of furniture, according to the video of the rescue. The troopers said the feisty pup, whom they nicknamed Oscar after the famous Sesame Street grouch, is believed to be about 1 years old. Advertisement 'Look at that little guy,' Buchell says in the video in a soft voice. 'What did you do buddy? What did you get yourself involved in?' Buchell stretches out for Oscar while he's still bobbing on the current. 'Come here buddy – don't bite me,' he adds in the same beseeching voice. NJ State Police Advertisement But Oscar wants no part of the trooper and in demonic fashion lunges, snaps and barks in one ferocious motion. The dog then leaps off the piece of furniture and briefly disappears underneath the water. An incredulous observer standing on a nearby pier says: 'He's trying to save you!' A group then begins to clap, and Buchell encourages them to keep it up so it helps redirect Oscar towards him and his partner. Advertisement 'Clap on this side of him, because he doesn't want to go by us,' he says. McClafferty ferries Buchell to a spot where he can crawl underneath the pier where Oscar had taken refuge. 'Come here buddy, I'm here to help you,' Buchell says. 'Good boy.' The demon responds by baring his teeth. 'Good boy, good boy, come here,' Buchell repeats, starting to get annoyed as he crawls over big jagged rocks and weathered tree limbs to get to Oscar. The dog lets out to terrifying tiny barks as he approaches. 'It's ok, it's ok, you ferocious little demon,' Buchell says. 'I'm trying to help.' Buchell takes off his neon emergency vest and slowly approaches Oscar and pounces on the pooch, wrapping him up Advertisement 'Easy, easy, easy,' he says while Oscar thrashes in his hands. The troopers deployed a life ring and rescue blanket to bring Oscar aboard a vessel safely, police said. Famous People Who Attended Tuskegee University
Rich Fury Every HBCU has a rich history when it comes to its origin story, but there's something purely unique and wildly extraordinary about the rise of Tuskegee University as founded by astounding educator and civil rights pioneer, Booker T. Washington. Although the university celebrated its 107th Founder's Day back in March — the inaugural ceremony occurred in 1917 — TU was in fact founded as an institution 144 years ago today (July 4) on Independence Day 1881. RELATED: Famous People Who Attended Tennessee State University Tuskegee University has gone through a few name changes since its inception, starting off as an institution specifically for educators in the form of Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers until 1891. Then it became the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute until 1937, followed by the shortened and simple Tuskegee Institute and finally Tuskegee University after achieving its university status in 1985. Washington, who led with the utmost pride, dedication and tenacity up until his premature death at the age of 59 due to high blood pressure, was preceded by equally dedicated principals in the form of Dr. Robert Russa Moton (1915 – 1935), Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson (1935 – 1953), Dr. Luther Hilton Foster Jr. (1953 – 1981), Dr. Benjamin Franklin Payton (1981 – 2010), Interim President Dr. Charlotte P. Morris (August 2010 – October 2010; July 2017 – June 2018), Dr. Gilbert L. Rochon (2010 – 2013), Interim President Dr. Matthew Jenkins (2013 – 2014), Dr. Brian Johnson (2014 – 2017), first female president Dr. Lily D. McNair (2018 – 2021), Dr. Charlotte P. Morris (2021 – 2024) and current president Dr. Mark A. Brown who was appointed exactly one year ago in July 2024. With such a strong culture of education at TU, it comes as no surprise that so many melanated folk would be vying to attend over the past century-and-a-half. Of those who've since graduated, a handful have gone on become stars in their own right while also carrying the Tuskegee pride in their journeys. Would you believe our very own founder, Tom Joyner, is a proud TU alumni?! He even spoke at their 2011 commencement ceremony, speaking words of wisdom to the 500 graduates at the time by stating, 'A lot of people are educated, but won't offer a hand to serve others. They're worth a lot of money … but not worth anything if they don't serve.' During his welcoming address for their virtual Homecoming in 2020, he helped drive that same love to inspire future TU alumni in their academics and beyond. Of course, you can't forget about the most famous Tuskegee alumni and hometown native, GRAMMY and Oscar-winning R&B icon Lionel Ritchie. Not only did he name his latest album after the love for his city with 2012's Tuskegee, the 76-year-old Motown legend also introduced a whole recreational facility in front of the gates of TU last year with Hello Park (seen above), named after his classic chart-topping single from the 1983 sophomore album, Can't Slow Down . The alumni love doesn't stop with those two by a long shot. Many famous faces from past to present can claim the school as their institution for higher learning, and below you'll find 20 that show just how special it is to call yourself a member of this prestigious family. JetBlue plane veers off Boston runway after landing; none injured
(NewsNation) — No one was injured Thursday when a JetBlue aircraft veered off the runway after landing at Boston's Logan Airport, creating a ground stop, officials said. JetBlue issued a statement that the aircraft, which had just arrived from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, left the runway after landing and veered into a grassy area. Officials said that passengers were being taken off the aircraft and would be bused to the terminal. Jared Leto's 'Oscar-worthy' movie on hold due to allegations: Source 'Safety is JetBlue's top priority,' the airline said. 'We will conduct a full investigation of the incident and will work closely with the relevant authorities to understand the cause.' Officials did not indicate how many passengers were aboard the plane, an Airbus A220, at the time of the incident. The Massachusetts Port Authority reported that the runway had been temporarily closed as the aircraft was assessed and as passengers were removed from the plane and transported to the terminal. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it would investigate the incident. The runway was scheduled to be closed until 2 p.m. ET after the incident took place just before noon local time.
