Superyacht engulfed in flames in French port of St Tropez

Firefighters put up an anti-pollution barrier around the Sea Lady II, a charter yacht that costs more than $90,000 a week to hire.
Two hours after the fire started, firefighters said they were struggling to get on board, and images on social media showed thick black smoke around the port.
'Surrounding yachts were quickly moved away and we have put up anti-pollution barriers,' a fire service spokesperson told AFP. The official added that it was 'likely' that the boat would sink in the port.
Built in 1986 and having undergone a last refit in 2024, the yacht has eight crew and can accommodate 10 passengers. The five cabins each have a private bathroom, according to the website of Charterlink, one of the agencies offering it for charter.

Want to shrink your carbon footprint this summer? Try slow travel!

France 05:03 Issued on: 05:03 min Summer holidays are in full swing, but how can we travel without polluting? One option is sailing across the Mediterranean. A French cooperative is offering an alternative to flying or taking the ferry with a new sailboat route between mainland France and Corsica. It's a long, slow and expensive adventure, but it's the greenest way to get there. Aurore Cloé Dupuis and Alexandra Renard tested "slow travelling" for us in this edition of Down to Earth.

Posts share bogus tickets to Sri Lanka luxury hotel opening

"Sharuk brother, see you then. Let's meet on that day," reads a Sinhala-language shared July 4, 2025, referring to the immensely popular Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan (). The post includes an image of a ticket bearing Khan's photo alongside text that says, "City of Dreams. Shar Kuh Khan to attend the opening of South Asia's integrated resort. Colombo." The pass is apparently priced at 20,000 Sri Lankan rupees (67 US dollars). Image Screenshot of the false post taken July 7, 2025, with a red X added by AFP Similar claims surfaced on Facebook after the City of Dreams announced Khan will be a special guest at the opening of the luxury resort in the capital Colombo on August 2 (archived link). Local media organisation Fact Crescendo earlier fact-checked the circulating posts (archived link). The event is "strictly by invitation only", according to the hotel in a statement released July 4 in response to the false posts "No third parties are authorized to issue, distribute, or sell tickets," it said. "We strongly advise everyone to exercise caution and avoid engaging with unofficial sources." An inspection of the circulating image found Khan's name has been wrongly written as, "Shar Kuh Khan". Other important details including the date and venue of the event are also missing from the purported ticket. Fast-spreading Grand Canyon wildfires force tourist evacuations

Fast-spreading wildfires have forced the evacuation of part of the Grand Canyon, with the US National Park Service saying at least 500 people had been guided out of the danger zone. The canyon's North Rim, which is less popular with tourists than the South Rim, was cleared of all visitors due to a blaze called the White Sage Fire. "Last night, Grand Canyon staff safely evacuated approximately 500 guests," the Park Service said in an update Friday, July 11. "All visitors have left the area, and park employees and residents remain sheltering in place. Day use access to the North Rim is closed until further notice." Jon Paxton, press officer for the Coconino County sheriff's office, told AFP that a hotel and some businesses had all been emptied. "Most of the folks we evacuated were campers," he said. "This area is high desert and mostly open forest for camping." The fire is burning outside the Grand Canyon National Park, but approaching Jacob Lake, Arizona, a small settlement known as the gateway to the North Rim. About 8,700 acres (3,500 hectares) have been scorched and the blaze is 0% contained, according to authorities, who released images of large columns of smoke rising above the scrubby desert. Ignited by lightning The fire was started by lightning during a thunderstorm on Wednesday. "Crews encountered very extreme fire behavior due to the dry conditions (and) gusty and erratic winds inhibiting the ability for fire fighters to safely engage the fire," the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said. One of the greatest wonders of the natural world, the Grand Canyon is the result of the Colorado River eating away at layers of red sandstone and other rock for millions of years, leaving a gash up to 18 miles (30 km) wide and more than a mile (1.6 km) deep. The Park Service advised against any hiking into the canyon, due to extreme heat and wildfire smoke. A 67-year-old man died on Tuesday while attempting to reach the river in hot conditions. Last year, almost five million people visited the world-famous site. Another popular site, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado, was also closed Friday because of a wildfire.
