Ohio State University going all in on AI to build ‘intuition': Provost

Yahoo11-06-2025
(NewsNation) — As artificial intelligence continues to be hotly debated in the United States, one college is going all in on letting the capability of computational systems perform tasks typically associated with human intelligence. Ravi Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president at Ohio State University, joined 'NewsNation Live' to discuss the school's 'AI Fluency Initiative' beginning this fall.
The 'AI Fluency Initiative' will be required of all students at the school. The hope is that the program will help students become bilingual, meaning fluent in their major field of study and applying AI in that area.
'We've been using all sorts of tools to augment learning, augment our understanding of the world,' said Bellamkonda. 'There's no question we live in a data-rich world now, from politics, to news, to manufacturing, to medicine, to all these fields of study and interest for our students. We have lots and lots of data. And the power of AI is to synthesize that data and make meaning out of it.'
Regulating AI for ten years in 'big, beautiful bill' no help: Tech expert
Pew Research Center said that in 2024, teens reported using AI twice as much as they did the year before. Over half say they think it's okay to use AI for research, while nearly 30% acknowledge it's acceptable to use AI for math problems. Less than 20% added that it's okay to use AI to write an essay.
'We really want to build intuition, judgment, and ethical understanding,' Bellamkonda said. 'When is it appropriate? When is it not appropriate? When is it hallucinating? When is it not? And we feel like having that conversation in the classroom with a professor in the context of the subject they are learning is really important for us.'
High school students create AI-detecting app to help teachers
Apple says it has a new research paper out that says artificial intelligence might not be as intelligent as some want it to be.
The company's new research paper claims that so-called 'large reasoning models' and 'large language models' such as ChatGPT give up when trying to solve complex problems. Their researchers say this is proof of limited capabilities that keep artificial intelligence from reasoning the way you or I do.
'We had the same fear, if you remember, when we had calculators,' added Bellamkonda. 'We were afraid that people would store formulas in there and not really understand. That's the challenge we have as educators now is to still make sure that our students have a deep understanding of the subject and they're not just letting AI do all the thinking.'
How AI is shaping industries across the US
Bloomberg also reported that Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, is seeking a team to build an AI that could reason on the same level as a human. He wants to hire around 50 people for the project. This comes after Meta delayed the release of a big new artificial intelligence model last month over concerns it wasn't good enough.
In addition, St. Petersburg, Florida, is installing AI or so-called 'smart signals' that can connect with tech in some newer vehicles. That tech can alert the driver about upcoming hazards and traffic conditions, such as flooding or a pedestrian in the area. The city is looking to invest more than $1 million in the project.

4 Genius Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks to Buy in August

Key Points Nvidia's growth rate could reaccelerate with its China export license expected to be restored. Taiwan Semiconductor and ASML are seeing increased chip demand. Alphabet is the cheapest big tech stock by far, and looks like a steal at these levels. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Artificial intelligence (AI) investing is still a prevailing theme in the market, and there are several stocks that look like excellent buys in August. If you're looking to increase your AI exposure, then taking a look at these four is a great idea. At the top of my list for best AI stocks to buy in August are Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE: TSM), Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL), and ASML (NASDAQ: ASML). These four have a great combination of growth and value. 1. Nvidia Nvidia has been the top stock of AI investing for a reason: Its graphics processing units (GPUs) have become the nearly universal computing equipment for training and running AI workloads. The demand for Nvidia GPUs is still quite strong, and it could get another growth catalyst in the near future. Back in April, the U.S. government revoked Nvidia's license to export to China the H20 chips that it had specifically designed to meet export restrictions. This was a huge blow to Nvidia's business, with Nvidia losing out on $8 billion in projected revenue from the $45 billion it had expected to generate. Fortunately, Nvidia has reapplied for its export license and says it has assurances from the government that it will be approved. While this won't affect Q2 results (which Nvidia will report in late August), a restart of H20 sales to China should boost growth for the remainder of the year. This will give Nvidia's stock a strong boost, making it a smart stock to buy in August. 2. Taiwan Semiconductor Taiwan Semiconductor is the world's largest chip foundry, and makes chips for companies like Nvidia that lack the capabilities to do it themselves. TSMC is winning business from other foundries, making it the clear leader in this space. It has already reported Q2 results, which delivered impressive 44% year-over-year revenue growth in U.S. dollars. However, that's just the beginning. Management expects that for the five-year period starting in 2025, it will deliver nearly a 20% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for revenue. With TSMC's stock trading at 25 times forward earnings, it's not that expensive right now. 3. Alphabet Alphabet recently reported impressive earnings, with revenue rising 14% year over year and diluted earnings per share (EPS) rising 22%. Normally, that would cause a big tech company to be assigned a forward earnings multiple in the high 20s to the low 30s, but Alphabet doesn't receive the same respect as other big tech companies. It trades for less than 20 times forward earnings, making it cheaper than the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), which trades at 24 times forward earnings. This cheap price tag is assigned to Alphabet's stock because investors are worried about Google Search losing market share to generative AI products. However, that hasn't surfaced. Google has integrated AI search overviews, which bridge the gap between a full generative AI experience and traditional search. Management stated that over 2 billion people have used this and that it has the same monetization as a traditional search. There have been no signs of weakness with Google Search, as revenue rose 12% year over year in the recent quarter. This indicates that Alphabet is cheap for no solid reason, which makes it a great buy for August. 4. ASML ASML is probably the least known company on this list, but it may be the most important. ASML has a technological monopoly on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, which chip fabricators (like Taiwan Semiconductor) use to lay the microscopic electrical traces on chips. Without ASML's machines, none of the AI tech we enjoy today would be possible. As chip demand rises, so will demand for ASML machines. While management was a bit bearish on its 2026 outlook thanks to tariff concerns, the long-term trend is still positive for ASML, as it's clear that chip demand is increasing. ASML is still slated to deliver strong growth over the next few years, and its fairly cheap 26 times earnings estimates price tag looks like a steal considering its dominant market position. Top Analysts Raise Amazon Stock (AMZN) Price Target Despite Pullback on Q2 Earnings

Amazon (AMZN) stock declined more than 8% on Friday despite the e-commerce and cloud computing giant's better-than-expected revenue and earnings for the second quarter. The selloff is being blamed on the subdued outlook and lofty expectations from Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud division, which failed to impress to the extent rival Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure did with its June quarter performance. Ignoring the pullback, top Wall Street analysts remain bullish on Amazon stock, with many raising their price targets to reflect confidence in the company's prospects. Top Analysts Remain Bullish on AMZN Stock Following the Q2 print, Bank of America Securities analyst Justin Post increased the price target for Amazon stock to $272 from $265 and reiterated a Buy rating. The 5-star analyst noted the Q2 revenue and earnings beat. He added that while AWS growth accelerated 60 basis points quarter-over-quarter to 17.5% and was slightly above Street, it lacked a 'capacity-aided top-line beat' similar to Azure and Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Additionally, Post noted that AWS margins missed expectations, with over half of the 6.5 percent quarter-over-quarter decline attributed to stock-based compensation (SBC) and forex headwinds. It was also impacted by growing depreciation. On the positive side, Post highlighted that Q3 revenue guidance of $174 billion to $179.5 billion beat the Street's expectation of $173 billion, boosted by a solid Prime Day, with a profit outlook of $15.5 billion to $20.5 billion bracketing the consensus estimate of $19.4 billion. Likewise, Barclays analyst Ross Sandler raised the price target for AMZN stock to $275 from $240 and reaffirmed a Buy rating. The 5-star analyst stated that he suspected 'knives would come out on AWS,' given that rivals' June quarter revenue and backlogs accelerated on AI, and also due to the margin miss. That said, Sandler has not lost any faith and expects AI to add a couple of points by the fourth quarter on Anthropic and other applications built on Claude-4's API. Meanwhile, the analyst highlighted that Amazon's retail posted a strong quarter again, with efficiency reaching all-time highs. Finally, DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria increased the price target for Amazon stock to $265 from $230 and reiterated a Buy rating. The top-rated analyst stated that despite the accelerating revenue in Amazon's retail business and stabilizing growth in AWS, Q2 results were largely overshadowed by capex guidance that is expected to see infrastructure investments accelerate through the second half of the year. Nonetheless, Luria noted that management continues to reiterate that they're seeing an acceleration of customers' transition to the cloud, along with demand for compute still exceeding supply at AWS. Is Amazon Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Overall, Wall Street has a Strong Buy consensus rating on Amazon stock based on 44 Buys versus one Hold recommendation. The average AMZN stock price target of $265.05 indicates 23.4% upside potential from current levels.
