Bahrain Explores Saudi Public Space Model
Bahrain is exploring how public art can reshape its cities, drawing lessons from a leading Saudi initiative that fuses architecture and cultural identity.
The Director General of Muharraq Municipality, Engineer Khalid Ali Al Qalaf, visited the headquarters of Al Fozan Group in Saudi Arabia to study the 'Majsam Watan' initiative - a national competition known for transforming urban spaces with symbolic architectural sculptures.
Urban Identity
During the visit, Al Qalaf praised the programme's role in strengthening national identity and enhancing the aesthetic and cultural fabric of public spaces. He said Bahrain is keen to adopt similar artistic and civic initiatives that reflect local heritage while promoting sustainability and best-in-class urban standards.
'Expanding regional cooperation and sharing experiences with pioneering institutions in urban and artistic development supports our goals for sustainable development,' Al Qalaf said.
Civic Partnerships
The Saudi initiative, launched by Al Fozan Social Foundation, was presented in detail by Engineer Mohammed Al Ghunaimi, Operations Director at Majsam Watan. He outlined how the initiative engages designers and engineers to create culturally resonant structures, many of which now define public spaces in several Saudi cities.
According to Al Ghunaimi, Majsam Watan stands as a successful model of public-private collaboration, providing a platform for creative professionals to celebrate national identity through architecture and art.
The visit signals Bahrain's intent to integrate art and identity in future civic projects.

Saudi Arabia Grants Expat Workers 60 Days To Avoid Being Classified As Absconders
Expatriate workers in Saudi Arabia will now have 60 days to adjust their status before being classified as absconders, under new rules introduced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. The changes, implemented through the ministry's Qiwa platform, reshape how employers can report foreign workers as absent, part of a broader effort to formalise and digitise labour relations in the Kingdom. Under the revised system, an employer may file an absconding report only if the worker's residency permit, or Iqama, is valid for at least 60 days and the employee no longer has an active contract. Once a worker's status is changed to 'disconnected from work,' Qiwa gives them 60 days to either transfer to another employer, leave the country, or sign a new contract with their current company. If no action is taken within that period, the platform will automatically mark the worker as 'absent from work' and remove their name from the company's records, triggering notifications to both the Human Resources and Interior ministries. The system also now terminates contracts automatically once the notice period ends, regardless of whether the separation was initiated by the employer or the employee. Qiwa — a digital portal designed to streamline labour-related services — also provides free employment certificates. Current employees can download a salary certificate reflecting their status, while former employees can request a service certificate documenting previous roles. These official documents, the ministry says, are intended to strengthen résumés and improve job prospects in the Saudi labour market.

Bahrain Extends Global Anti-Trafficking Role
TDT | Manama Bahrain is stepping up its role as a regional source of expertise in combating human trafficking, with its national anti-trafficking committee confirming efforts to share the Kingdom's model with countries seeking to replicate its approach. The move was underlined during the committee's regular meeting this week, chaired by Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) CEO Nabras Talib, who also serves as head of the National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons. The session coincided with the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed annually on July 30, and reaffirmed Bahrain's commitment to supporting global efforts to eradicate trafficking and promote awareness across communities. Talib said the day served as a timely moment to renew Bahrain's pledge and highlight its 'internationally respected' standing in the field. He added that Bahrain had made firm and consistent progress toward becoming a regional leader in anti-trafficking due to institutional collaboration and policy reforms aimed at improving labour conditions. During the meeting, committee members also reviewed Bahrain's latest initiatives to support a fair and sustainable labour market. These included stronger partnerships with private sector entities and diplomatic missions from labour-sending countries. Experience Sharing Bahrain's strategy now includes inviting other nations to study its mechanisms and learn from its policies. The meeting stressed the value of institutional partnerships and knowledge exchange to boost regional efforts. A key focus was also placed on a new study evaluating the effectiveness of Bahrain's oversight on procurement and supply chains, a rising global benchmark for ethical practices that prevent trafficking-related abuses. Ongoing Coordination Talib emphasised the importance of working closely with all stakeholders to uphold a labour market that protects employers and workers alike. He praised the role of diplomatic missions and employers in spreading awareness of national laws that safeguard labour rights. The committee vowed to continue refining its systems to adapt to labour market changes and challenges, ensuring Bahrain's continued leadership on the global anti-trafficking stage.
