BCCI settlement: Supreme Court to hear Byju's insolvency appeals
has admitted two appeals in the ongoing insolvency proceedings of Think & Learn, the parent entity of Byju's. The appeals were filed by the company's promoters and cricket body BCCI.

The apex court has scheduled the next hearing for July 21.
The cases stem from the insolvency application filed by the BCCI, which alleged unpaid dues from Byju's, a former Team India sponsor. However, both BCCI and Byju's claimed that a Rs 158-crore settlement was reached and executed before the constitution of the committee of creditors (CoC). The promoters are seeking withdrawal of the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) based on this pre-CoC agreement.
Senior advocate KK Venugopal, appearing for the Byju's promoters, argued that the BCCI settlement was "fully agreed upon, paid, and formally communicated to the interim resolution professional well before the CoC was constituted." Supporting the plea, senior counsel Guru Krishna Kumar told the court that the company's US assets are at risk, alleging that the resolution professional withdrew American legal proceedings initiated by Think & Learn against its lenders.
The promoters' legal challenge comes after the NCLAT refused to allow the insolvency withdrawal, citing the formation of CoC.
The dispute adds a fresh layer to the legal troubles surrounding Byju's, which has been under intense scrutiny from regulators, creditors, and investors over the past year. The July 21 hearing could determine whether Byju's can exit the insolvency process based on the timing and validity of the BCCI settlement.

Indian officials are hoping to secure a trade deal with US President Donald Trump at a lower tariff rate than he'd agreed with Indonesia as New Delhi races to meet an August 1 deadline. Trump said Tuesday the US will impose a tariff rate of 19% on imports from Indonesia, down from a threatened 32%, and will be able to ship American goods to the country tariff-free. The US president later told reporters that the India deal would be "along that same line" and "we're going to have access into India." On Wednesday, he again said the US was "very close" to a deal with India. India is seeking more favourable rates than Indonesia and the 20% tariff Trump has said he'll impose on Vietnam, officials in New Delhi said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private. The US and India are working toward a deal that would reduce proposed tariffs to below 20%, Bloomberg News previously reported, with a negotiating team currently in Washington to advance the talks. New Delhi is hoping for a tariff that would give it a competitive advantage against its peers in the region, officials said. India believes the US doesn't view it as a transhipment hub like Vietnam and other Southeast Asian nations, and negotiations so far suggest India's tariff rate would be better than those countries, one of the people said. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry didn't immediately respond to an email seeking further comment. GLOBAL INSIGHT: Delhi's Trade Math in Talks with Trump Soumya Kanti Ghosh, chief economist of State Bank of India, and a member of the prime minister's Economic Advisory Council, said the negotiating team would be hoping to bring the tariff down to below 10%. "And in the bargain, the US will expect significant concessions for its goods when they decide to enter India," he said. While India is unwilling to open up the agricultural and dairy sectors, it may give concessions in non-agricultural sectors, he said. India has already proposed to reduce tariffs on American industrial goods to zero if the US does the same. New Delhi has also offered greater market access to some American farm products, and has also raised the possibility of buying more Boeing Co. planes. Aside from Indonesia, Trump has also announced trade deals with the UK and Vietnam, and a truce with China. Trump said Jakarta had agreed to purchase $15 billion in US energy and $4.5 billion worth of agricultural products along with Boeing planes. The latest development shows that tariff rates are gravitating toward 15%-20%, a range that Trump himself has indicated as his preferred level, said Brian Tan, Barclays Plc's economist in Singapore. The tariff letters sent to trading partners so far are likely a negotiating tactic to bring governments back to the table with better offers for the US, he said, "allowing the Trump administration to secure superior 'deals'." Malaysia's trade minister said he's waiting to see the details of the Indonesia agreement and the country is still in negotiations with the US on its own tariffs, The Star reported. "Most importantly, we must ensure that this is a negotiation beneficial to both countries," Tengku Zafrul, minister of investment, trade and industry, was quoted by the newspaper as saying. "It must be win-win."

85 Rescued By Visakhapatnam Cops After Crackdown On Human Trafficking Racket
Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Police has rescued 85 individuals and arrested 22 in a major crackdown on human trafficking and cybercrime operations, Dr. Shankabrata Bagchi, Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner announced on Wednesday. These criminal networks primarily targeted the Southeast Asian nations like Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, preying on the aspirations of Indian youth seeking lucrative overseas employment. "Cybercrime police have arrested a gang involved in illegal human trafficking for cybercrimes, ensuring the safety of innocent victims," stated Commissioner Bagchi, emphasising the department's commitment to public safety. The Commissioner highlighted a disturbing trend where promising advertisements for "data entry jobs in air-conditioned rooms" with high salaries and minimal educational requirements lure unsuspecting young individuals into a trap. These victims, predominantly unemployed youth, are then trafficked to countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, and Bangkok, where they are coerced into working for China-based cyber scam companies. How Cops Cracked It A recent breakthrough occurred on July 14, 2025, when police apprehended an agent named Suresh from Gajuwaka and his accomplice, Adilakshmi alias Anu, at Visakhapatnam Airport. They were attempting to send four young men and women to Cambodia under the false pretense of data entry jobs. Investigations revealed that Suresh, who had previously worked in a scam company in Cambodia, had returned to India and, with the assistance of Vijay Kumar alias Sunny and Adilakshmi, had already trafficked 12 individuals. From them, police seized two cell phones, Rs 50,000 in cash, $2,000 (Rs 1.80 lakh), and 20 SIM cards. Police investigations indicate that Vijay Kumar alias Sunny acts as the primary agent for China-based scam companies in Cambodia, specifically targeting Telugu-speaking youth from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He uses local agents to entice unemployed individuals with false promises of employment. According to police intelligence, approximately 500 individuals from North Andhra have travelled to Cambodia and Myanmar on visiting visas. While some are genuine victims, the authorities believe others are intentionally involved in cybercrimes and have become agents themselves, recruiting more unemployed youth from India. Commissioner Bagchi issued a stern warning to fake agents and consultancies, stating that strict action will be taken under the Emigration Act-1983 against those deceiving the public. He emphasised that legitimate agents must hold a valid registration certificate, adhere to the Protection of Immigration Act, and refrain from overcharging or appointing sub-agents. Unregistered or fraudulent agents promising foreign jobs face immediate legal action and arrest. Public Advisory Issued A public advisory was also issued, urging citizens to verify agents' credentials on and to report suspicious activities or demands for high fees to the Visakhapatnam CP's special number 7995095799. Victims of scams are advised to call 1930 to file a complaint. Furthermore, an advisory to parents/guardians urged them to verify the activities of their children or relatives working in China-related scam companies in Cambodia, Myanmar, or Bangkok. "If they are involved in criminal activities, advise them to return to the country immediately. Otherwise, file a complaint with the City Police Commissioner," Dr. Bagchi urged. He warned that failure to comply could result in a Lookout Circular (LOC) and legal action, with information gathering coordinated via the Indian Embassy. "In this era where small hopes lead to big scams... Caution is protection. Stay alert - Don't get scammed - Stay aware," the Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner said, reiterating the urgency of public awareness and cooperation in combating these sophisticated criminal operations.
