Belfast tech firm to use £640k investment to develop app on boosting healthy screen time

A Belfast tech company has secured £640,000 in investment to develop its app which aims to reduce unproductive screen time.
Fluid Focus, which makes an app of the same name, seeks to incentivise users into having healthier screen time.
Founders Glenn Stephenson and Connor Mason describe the cash boost, made by Clarendon Fund Managers and other angel investors, as supporting their ambitions to expand into new markets, such as the US.
They also want to continue to build relationships with academic institutions and businesses.
Fluid Focus carried out a research programme with Dr Paul Redmond, of the University of Liverpool, that saw 18 academic institutions and more than 2,800 students participate in a study into how Gen Z interacts with technology.
News Catch Up - Monday 28th July
The findings showed that 'current students spend on average 5.5 hours on their phone every day, which amounts to 25 years of scrolling over their waking lifetime, if their habits remain unchanged'.
Mr Mason said: 'The reality is that the big tech companies have monetised our time and attention.
'Every second spent on their platforms translates to revenue. The incentivisation model is all wrong, which is why we as a society are realising a broad range of negative outcomes, from diminishing attention spans to rising anxiety and body image issues.
'Our mission is to restore individual agency, empowering people to lead healthy, intentional and fulfilling lives.'
Clarendon's money came from its Co-Fund III programme, an investment vehicle the company operates on behalf of Invest NI.
Jill Wilson, investment associate at Clarendon Fund Managers, said: 'Fluid Focus has tapped into the public's desire for a healthy relationship with technology with a research-led approach and has great potential for growth, particularly in the Gen Z market.
'We're excited to see how the company develops and grows with this investment.' Mr Stephenson added: 'As a Belfast-born company with global ambitions, this investment marks a major milestone and sets us up to expand into the US market.
'The challenge that we're tackling is universal: people are overwhelmed by tech that's designed to keep them hooked.
'Fluid Focus is proud to be at the front of a growing movement to flip that model — rebalancing how people interact with their devices and giving individuals and institutions the tools to take back their time, focus, and wellbeing.'

Your break-up could cost you £15,000 as financial burden of heartbreak is revealed

New research has found that finances are the top cause of arguments in UK couples - although a break-up can ironically lead to a huge financial burden, particularly if you share a home In the UK, 42% of marriages end in divorce and the most common reasons for the breakdown in relationships are children, family, and financial issues, research has found. ‌ In fact, finances make up the largest cause for arguments in couples at 29%, and this comes as no surprise as many of us will be able to understand the stress money, or lack thereof, can place on a relationship. ‌ Some couples may argue about living pay-check to pay-check, while others may fight about paying the bills, investing, or spending money on different things. However, splitting up can actually add to a person's financial burden, new research shows. ‌ The average divorce costs Brits about £14,500, according to GoodMove, before even considering legal disputes or the financial fallout of running two households. When a relationship breaks down, a couple has to take on the burden of running two households - if someone moves out - as well as the emotional stress of selling the shared home. This is worsened by the average property sale time of 22 weeks. ‌ READ MORE: Brutal breakups causing over a third of Gen Z to take heartbreak leave from work Nima Ghasri, director at Good Move, comments: 'Alongside grieving, having a child, or moving house, research suggests that the breakdown of a relationship causes enormous emotional stress which, when combined with the financial and logistical burden that comes with separating property assets, can often drag the pain out for months.' Quicker sales can help with 'protecting peace, promoting stability and moving on', because couples who have split aren't just hoping to sell their home, but 'close a chapter'. Nearly half (46%) of divorcing home-owning couples sell their property which results in both people needing to find a new home, according to Aviva. One in six (16%) buy a new home after the separation, while just over half (51%) move to the rental market. ‌ The average time for someone to spend as a renter post-split is 4.7 years, Aviva found - while almost one in five (19%) of people rent for more than a decade after the break up. As well as finances, other key causes of divorce include infidelity, addiction, and poor communication. Family Law Partners also said some couples simply drift apart, which may become an issue during key points of a couple's lives, such as when children leave home. The experts said: 'For some couples, this may give them time to reconnect and concentrate on each other. However, sometimes the ordinary hustle and bustle of family life is no longer masking issues and couples realise that they no longer want to remain together.' Incompatibility is also a large reason for divorce, they said, adding that issues or differences that were overlooked at the start of the relationship, could later become more obvious which can 'result in people being married to someone who does not fulfil their needs'. Tinder users warned over new profile picture changes

The dating app launched in 2012 and is now the world's most-used app with about 50 million users per month. However, in a new update message sent to users, Tinder has warned those seeking love will be restricted to "limited access" if they do not make sure their profile pictures are clear. The new update was rolled out at the end of July and is coming soon, so users must act fast. Tinder users warned over new profile picture changes A message sent to Tinder to its users reads: "At Tinder, we're always working to create a safer and more fun space for everyone. "That's why, in 30 days, we'll be rolling out a new profile requirement: all profiles will need to have a clear photo where your face is fully visible. "After all, authentic connections start with being able to see who you're connecting with. "If you're profile already has a clear face photo, you're all set. "If not, now's the perfect time to add one so you can keep enjoying all of Tinder's features. "Without a face photo, you'll have limited access to some features until one is added." Users will need to upload at least one clear photo of their face if they don't already have one and using automated technology Tinder will estimate whether a user appears to be 18 or older. In cases where we can't confirm age, Tinder says the account may be "temporarily restricted" while a manual review is completed or further verification is requested, such as an ID check. Tinder says users undergoing this process won't be visible to others and will have limited functionality until the review is complete. New Tinder 'double date' feature The news is not the only change to Tinder in recent weeks, with it launching a new double date feature last month. Users who activate 'double date' can select up to three friends to create a pair with. Pairs can then 'swipe right', or like other pairs on the app, with just one like per pair needed to form a match. If there is a match, then a group chat is launched for pairs to message and organise a date. Recommended reading: Tinder said it was drawing in young people and women looking for a more social and low-pressure way of meeting people. The platform has also been ramping up efforts to retain women and Gen Z users following the Covid pandemic, growing safety concerns and a broader shift in the way younger people approach dating. This has included rolling out additional safety features such as ID verification and 'share my date', which allows users to share details of their date, including the time, place, and a photo of their match, with friends and family.
