Eight dead, more than 400 injured as cops suppress Kenya protests
Isolated clashes were reported in the port city of Mombasa, according to NTV, with protests also in the towns of Kitengela, Kisii, Matuu and Nyeri.
Though last year's protests faded after President William Ruto withdrew proposed tax hikes, public anger has remained over the use of excessive force by security agencies, with fresh demonstrations this month over the death of a blogger in police custody.
Six people, including three police officers, were charged with murder on Tuesday over the killing of 31-year-old blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang. All have pleaded not guilty.
Ojwang's death has become a lightning rod for Kenyans still mourning those who perished at last year's demonstrations, blamed on security forces, against a backdrop of dozens of unexplained disappearances.
'We are fighting for the rights of our fellow youths and Kenyans and the people who died since June 25 ... we want justice,' Lumumba Harmony, a protester, told Reuters in Nairobi.
The unprecedented scenes on Wednesday, showing police firing at protesters as they broke through barriers to enter parliament, created the biggest crisis of Ruto's presidency and sparked alarm among Kenya's international allies.

A retired police detective has turned to AfriForum's private prosecution unit for assistance as he fears the SAPS has not gathered all available evidence in the murder case involving his daughter, who was also a former police detective. Barry Bateman, spokesperson for the unit, told TimesLIVE it is representing retired colonel Willie Steyn and his family, after his daughter, Riana Nel, was brutally assaulted and left for dead before away dying in a hospital about a week later. 'Mauritz Andries Rheeder, Nel's partner, is accused of committing the crime and is in custody pending a bail application,' Bateman said. Rheeder, who is also a former police officer, is accused of assaulting Nel on the night of May 31 in the couple's shared flat in Mthatha, then allegedly staging the scene to make it appear as if she had been murdered. 'However, she did not die at the scene, and after a family member intervened, Nel was taken to hospital. Nel sustained severe head injuries and her body was covered in scratches and bruises. She died in the hospital on June 6 without regaining full consciousness or being able to explain what happened.'

Murkomen told a press briefing the protesters were trying to enact 'regime change', and said police had been forced to hold back large crowds who sought to approach parliament and State House, the president's residence. Missing girl, 12, found murdered
A 12-year-old girl who went missing earlier this week was found murdered in the bushes in Motherwell in the early hours of Friday morning. Police have arrested a 39-year-old man on charges of kidnapping and murder after the body of young Lithaliyanda Ntoni was discovered near Khabonqaba Street, NU6, just after 2am. She had last been seen on Tuesday after going to a nearby shop. She never returned home. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed the incident. She said an investigation was under way. Maj-Gen Thandiswa Kupiso, acting provincial commissioner of the Eastern Cape, said: 'While we commend the swift arrest in this case, the brutal nature of this child's murder has deeply shocked our officers and the community.
