'MGS had his strong opinions on which he held forth. The debates, he said, used to be hot but at the same time MGS kept close to the path of open and honest discussion. He did not mince words when it came to his political opinions. He accepted the Marxist historiography but did not agree with the Marxist party,' Dr. Ganesh said.
'Though he became the Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research he did not fully toe the line set by the National Democratic Alliance-led government at the centre', he said.
Dr. Ganesh remembers MGS Narayanan, who had his strong opinions, as one with whom he enjoyed a great friendship. His opinions did not keep MGS away from friendships. 'My association with MGS began towards the end of 1970s and the warm friendship continued until the end of his life', he said.

If 14,000 men have benefitted from Ladki Bahin Yojana, we will recover money from them: Ajit Pawar
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday said the government will recover money from those men who have taken advantage of the state's flagship Ladki Bahin Yojana which was said to be largely instrumental in bringing the BJP-led Mahayuti back to power in Maharashtra. Over 14,000 men have been reportedly benefitted from the scheme. 'The Ladki Bahin Yojana was implemented as financial assistance for poor women. It was brought with honest intention. It was not meant for men. And therefore, we are going to recover the money from them. If they do not co-operate, we will take action against them,' Pawar told reporters when asked about the media reports that 14,298 men have benefitted from the scheme. The scheme was started in August 2024 before the Assembly elections. The beneficiaries got Rs 1,500 per month in their bank accounts. As many as 14,298 men have apparently received benefits of over Rs 21 crore. Sports Minister Dattatraya Bharne, who in the past had admitted how the scheme had put additional financial burden on the state government, said, 'If men have got benefits from the scheme, the government will take appropriate action in the matter.' Another NCP Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said, 'If this has happened, then government will investigate.' Shashikant Shinde, NCP (S-P) state president, said, 'We have been consistently saying that those who were not eligible were getting benefits of the Ladki Bahin Yojana. In the House too, we had been asking the government to recover the amount which was wrongly distributed. The scheme was wrongly implemented.' Baramati MP Supriya Sule said it has come to light that some men have taken advantage of the Ladki Bahin Yojana. 'The government hurriedly got lakhs of forms filled up by women before the Assembly elections,' she said, while demanding ED and CBI investigation against contractors who were tasked with getting forms filled up from women about the Ladki Bahin Yojana.

"CPM Will Win": Row Over Kerala Congress Leader's Leaked Phone Conversation
Thiruvananthapuram: Palode Ravi, president of the Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee, resigned from his post on Saturday following "embarrassment caused to the party after he predicted a poor performance" for the Congress in the upcoming local body and Assembly elections. KPCC president Sunny Joseph, in a statement, said he had accepted Palode Ravi's resignation. He also announced the expulsion of Vamanapuram block general secretary A Jaleel-whose eight-minute phone conversation with Ravi was leaked-from the party's primary membership for engaging in "anti-organisational activities". Party sources said Palode Ravi was asked to resign on the instructions of the AICC leadership. Earlier in the day, Sunny Joseph said he was holding consultations with the AICC on the "grave" issue. A leaked phone conversation between Ravi and Jaleel-in which Ravi predicted "doom" for the Congress in the upcoming elections-had triggered shockwaves among state leaders, who have been projecting a major victory for the Congress-led United Democratic Front. The conversation was aired by Malayalam television channels earlier in the day. In the call, Ravi is heard criticising "groupism and selfishness among local leaders", saying the party has "lost mutual respect and trust." "They are only keen on backstabbing each other, and there is nobody to work among the people," he claimed. He went on to say that, under the current circumstances, the Congress would come third in the local body polls and "fall flat" in the Assembly elections. "The BJP is targeting at least 60 Assembly seats, where they will distribute money and secure around 50,000 votes. The Congress will lose those seats, and the CPI(M) will retain power," he is heard saying. He also remarked that Congress would become "useless baggage" after the elections. Later, downplaying the issue, Ravi-a former deputy speaker and MLA-told reporters the conversation was "meant to motivate workers to strengthen the party's organisational structure and campaign more actively." "I don't know how the call was leaked. The UDF is united in its campaign, and I had only urged workers to stay together and reclaim the local bodies we lost earlier," he added. The Congress has been making elaborate arrangements for its local body poll campaign, assigning senior leaders to lead efforts in the three major municipal corporations. The charge for Thiruvananthapuram has been given to senior leader K Muraleedharan, for Ernakulam to Opposition Leader V D Satheesan, and Kozhikode to Congress Working Committee member Ramesh Chennithala. The upcoming local body polls are tentatively scheduled for December this year, while the assembly elections are due in April next year.

RSS trying to create ‘correct Hindu atmosphere' in Kerala, says Subhashini Ali
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is trying to create what it calls the 'correct Hindu atmosphere' in Kerala, veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leader Subhashini Ali has claimed. She was here on Saturday (July 27) to deliver a lecture in memory of writer-film-maker 'Chintha' Raveendran on the topic 'Manuvadi Hindutva – rewriting culture, history and right to equality'. 'The Manuvadi Hindutva project aims to destroy everything that makes Kerala unique – its strong syncretic cultural and religious forms and observances that weld various communities together in a common Malayali identity, its vibrant culture of progressive, avant garde literature, cinema, dance forms and theatre, its strong social reform renaissance movement that pushed back caste oppression, patriarchal dominance, feudal ways of thinking and brought about social transformation in the State, and its promotion of rational and scientific thinking and its history of struggle and sacrifice against both colonial and class exploitation,' she said. Ms. Ali said that Kerala had a very special place in the RSS agenda. 'Success in Kerala is of especial importance to the RSS, which [M.S.] Golwalkar described as a fortress of all three internal enemies of Hindutva – Muslims, Christians and the Communists. His commitment to the capture of this fortress is evident from the fact that he visited Kerala every year until his death,' she said. 'To make a dent in Kerala, the RSS decided fairly early that it should not concentrate on fighting elections and try to augment electoral gains steadily,' Ms. Ali said. She added that the RSS developed and honed its strategy of infiltrating different sections of society by various means to create a situation that could be used for achieving impressive electoral success. Hindutva organisations such as Desiya Seva Bharathi, Kerala Kshetra Samarakshana Samiti and Vivekananda Vedic Vision Kendra were being deployed for the purpose. Ms. Ali pointed out that for these organisations, their paramount mission was to bring about a foundational cultural transformation of society centred on a 'Hindu atmosphere' which, they believe, would naturally lead to the political and electoral preferences of people becoming solely confined to Hindutva politics. Ms. Ali described how the Hindutva organisations helped the BJP create an electoral impact in Kodangallur in Thrissur through their work and the activities around the Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Temple there. She claimed that such a model had been sought to be replicated across the State through various temple activities and pilgrimages, and cited the agitation against the Supreme Court verdict allowing women of all ages to visit the Sabarimala Temple as an example. The strong mobilisation that the reactionary forces could inspire, far beyond the strength of just the Sangh Parivar and its supporters, also needs to be understood, she added. Sharankumar Limbale, a Marathi writer, was presented with the 'Chintha' Raveendran Award for 2025. Functionaries of the Chintha Raveendran Foundation, such as N.S. Madhavan, among others, were present.
