Ripple applies for US banking license, joining crypto rush for legitimacy

Crypto Insight8 hours ago
Crypto firm Ripple Labs is applying for a banking license in the US, following a similar move by stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group as crypto firms look to be regulated to deepen ties with traditional finance.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse confirmed on X on Wednesday that the company is applying for a license with the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), following an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal.
'True to our long-standing compliance roots, Ripple is applying for a national bank charter from the OCC,' he wrote.
Garlinghouse said if the license is approved, it would be a 'new (and unique!) benchmark for trust in the stablecoin market' as the firm would be under federal and state oversight — with the New York Department of Financial Services already regulating its Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin.
Ripple follows Circle on wanting bank charter
Ripple's decision to get a banking license came just two days after Circle, which issues the second-largest stablecoin USDC, applied to the OCC to create a national trust bank that would oversee its stablecoin reserves.
The move by both firms comes as the US Senate passed a stablecoin regulating bill called the GENIUS Act, which lays out standards for offering the US dollar-pegged tokens, including that the OCC will oversee larger stablecoin issuers.
Circle co-founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire said the company was taking 'proactive steps' to 'align with emerging US regulation for the issuance and operation of dollar-denominated payment stablecoins.'
Anchorage Digital is the only crypto firm that holds a national bank charter. Ripple bids for Fed master account
Ripple's Garlinghouse added that the company also applied for a Master Account with the Federal Reserve, which would give it access to the US central banking system.
'This access would allow us to hold $RLUSD reserves directly with the Fed and provide an additional layer of security to future proof trust in RLUSD,' Garlinghouse said.
'Congress is working towards clear rules and regulations, and banks (in a far cry from the years of Operation Chokepoint 2.0) are leaning in,' he added, mentioning the conspiracy that the Biden administration sought to cut off crypto from the financial system.
Ripple applied for the account through Standard Custody, a crypto custody firm it acquired in February 2024. XRP gains over 3% on Ripple's bank charter application
XRP, the token of the XRP Ledger blockchain that Ripple Labs uses for its products, has risen 3.2% over the past day to trade at $2.24, according to CoinGecko.
The token began to climb late on Wednesday before hitting a 24-hour peak of $2.27 around the time of Garlinghouse's post before slightly cooling from its rally.

UAE: Etihad Airways celebrates first flight to Atlanta

Etihad Airways has touched down in Atlanta for the first time, expanding its US footprint and connecting the cultural and commercial heart of the US Southeast with Abu Dhabi and beyond. The launch marks another milestone in Etihad's North American expansion. Etihad's first flight from Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport touched down on July 2, making Atlanta the fifth US gateway in Etihad's global network, joining New York City, Chicago, Washington DC, and Boston. Guests travelling from Abu Dhabi benefit from the convenience of the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance facility at Zayed International Airport — the only one of its kind in the region. This allows passengers to clear US immigration and customs before departure, arriving in the United States as domestic travellers and saving valuable time on arrival. The newly launched route meets the growing appetite for travel between the UAE and the US, catering to business travellers, vacationers, and those visiting friends and family. The Atlanta route launched with four flights per week, but record-high load factors and remarkable early bookings have prompted Etihad to fast-track expansion, with daily flights set to commence from November 2025. Demand from both leisure and corporate segments has exceeded expectations, firmly validating Atlanta's position as a key market for Etihad. Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer at Etihad Airways, said, 'Atlanta is a dynamic city with deep cultural, economic and aviation significance. This new service enhances access to the southeastern United States while offering seamless connections across the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Asia. 'With US Preclearance at Zayed International Airport, guests can enjoy the convenience of arriving in Atlanta as domestic travellers. We're delighted to bring our award-winning experience to guests travelling to and from Atlanta.

US imposes fresh sanctions targeting Iran oil trade, Hezbollah

The US imposed sanctions on Thursday against a network that smuggles Iranian oil disguised as Iraqi oil, and on a Hezbollah-controlled financial institution, the Treasury Department said. "Treasury will continue to target Tehran's revenue sources and intensify economic pressure to disrupt the regime's access to the financial resources that fuel its destabilising activities,' Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. The US has imposed waves of sanctions on Iran's oil exports over its nuclear programme and funding of militant groups across the Middle East. Reuters reported late last year that a fuel oil smuggling network that generates at least $1 billion a year for Iran and its proxies has flourished in Iraq since 2022. Thursday's sanctions came after the US carried out strikes on June 22 on three Iranian nuclear sites, including its most deeply buried enrichment plant Fordow. The Pentagon said on Wednesday the strikes had degraded Iran's nuclear programme by up to two years, despite a far more cautious initial assessment that had leaked to the public. The US and Iran are expected to hold talks about its nuclear programme next week in Oslo, Axios reported. The sanctions block US assets of those designated and prevent Americans from doing business with them. The Treasury Department also issued sanctions against several senior officials and one entity associated with the Hezbollah-controlled financial institution Al-Qard Al-Hassan. The officials, the department said, conducted millions of dollars in transactions that ultimately benefited, but obscured, Hezbollah.

Etihad Airways launches direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Atlanta, its fifth US destination

Etihad Airways 's first direct flight from Abu Dhabi to Atlanta has taken off, making the US city the airline's fifth destination from Abu Dhabi. Flight EY13 took off from Zayed International Airport at 9.20am local time on Thursday, landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 4.20pm local time. The flight is serviced by Etihad's Airbus A350-1000, a fuel-efficient, environmentally advanced aircraft offering a quieter ride. There are 327 economy seats, each with 13-inch touch screens and bluetooth headset pairing. Each of the 44 business class seats feature a sliding door for suite-like privacy, 18.5-inch TV screens, noise-cancelling headphones and seats that convert into a fully flat bed of 79 inches in length. The Atlanta route will initially be served four times a week – on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays – with daily flights set to be launched by November, Etihad said. 'Atlanta is a dynamic city with deep cultural, economic and aviation significance,' said Etihad Airways chief executive Antonoaldo Neves. 'This new service enhances access to the southeastern United States while offering seamless connections across the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Asia. 'With US pre-clearance at Zayed International Airport, guests can enjoy the convenience of arriving in Atlanta as domestic travellers.' Zayed International Airport is the only airport in the Middle East that offers pre-clearance facilities to travellers flying to the US. These allow travellers to enter the US as domestic passengers, having cleared international immigration before leaving the UAE. Atlanta is Etihad's fifth US destination, joining New York City, Chicago, Washington DC and Boston. The Atlanta route is the first of 10 new direct rotes announced in November last year. Other destinations are in Asia and Africa. Flights to Taipei in northern Taiwan will start in September, followed by new routes to Medan, Phnom Penh and Krabi in October and Tunis, Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, Hanoi and Algiers in November. Tickets for each destination are already on sale.
