BOPARC initiates $620,000 playground project in upper Marilla Park
Come Memorial Day weekend, when BOPARC's $14 million pool and aquatic complex opens in the park's upper portion, it'll be flanked by another brand new attraction.
Earlier this week, the Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners approved a $378, 206 contract with Fairmont's Veritas Contracting to install $245, 000 worth of playground equipment a stone's throw from the new pool — very near the location of the old playground area.
"This includes putting the playground equipment together, getting it up, doing the pour-in-place surface, revegetation and all that stuff — basically turning that space into the playground, " BOPARC Executive Director Melissa Wiles said, explaining the play area will cover more than 7, 400 square feet.
"It's a big playground with a lot of equipment, " she said.
The playground will consist of 28 play components broken into two main sections — one appropriate for kids between two and five years old, and another for kids between five and 12.
This is actually the second time BOPARC has bid this project.
When it went out the first time, last October, the anticipated budget topped out at $300, 000. The average bid came in around $380, 000.
The decision was made to try again this spring in the hope costs may come down.
They haven't.
"This is not pre-COVID, and this is a huge playground, " Wiles told members of the board.
"Reality is real and the cost of materials and supplies, especially safety surfacing, is substantial, " she later told The Dominion Post. "That said, we are committed to the provision of modern, accessible play spaces, and having bid this twice now, we are confident we'll have one."
While the pool and playground will begin a new chapter for the old park when they open this summer, the story is just getting started.
Wiles said BOPARC is hopeful a complete overhaul of the park's lower section can go out to bid in late March or early April.
That work has been estimated in the $9 million range and will include a new action sports /skate park in the former pool location.
New tennis courts will move to the end of the property to fill space currently occupied by the skate park and the old shirt factory building.
Improvements will also include pickleball courts, covered and open court bleachers, a new basketball court, a recreational field, a trail head for the Marilla Connector Trail, revamped parking areas aligned with each zone and renovations to the Marilla Center.
"We're moving along. If you're looking at a six-week bid process, you're looking at you guys approving the project in, hopefully, your May meeting, " Wiles told the board. "Then we're hoping to get started in late May, early June or so.

Penske-Fox Deal May Address Succession Issues At Indianapolis 500
Fox Corp. said Thursday it is acquiring one-third of Penske Entertainment, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar series. The announcement deepens the business ties between Roger Penske, 88, and Rupert Murdoch, 94, the overseer of the Fox empire. The transaction may address looming succession issues at one of the most storied racing revenues in the United States. Fox Sports this year began televising Penske's IndyCar series, including the Indianapolis 500. Terms of the new deal were not disclosed. Penske Entertainment said the deal included 'a multiyear extension' of Fox Sports' media rights with IndyCar. 'This partnership is built on long-standing trust and a shared vision for the future,' Roger Penske said in a statement. Fox 'sees the incredible potential across our sport and wants to play an active role in building our growth trajectory,' he said. The deal comes at a critical time for the Indianapolis speedway and the IndyCar series. Roger Penske agreed in 2019 to acquire the speedway and the IndyCar series from the Hulman-George family, which bought the speedway in 1945. That transaction became final in early 2020. IndyCar and Championship Auto Racing Teams battled for supremacy of U.S. open-wheel racing in the 1990s and 2000s. Eventually, the Hulman-George family won the fight. During that era, the European-based Formula One series raced at the Indianapolis speedway, beginning in 2000. After several years, F1 moved on from Indy but later came back to the U.S. in a bigger way. F1 now has three U.S. races. IndyCar, meanwhile, has struggled to demonstrate it's more than the Indianapolis 500, held annually during Memorial Day weekend. In its first year on Fox, the 500 averaged 7.01 million viewers in 2025, its best showing since 2008. That was better than the almost 6.8 million viewers for the Daytona 500 in February, NASCAR's biggest race, also televised by Fox. But things weren't all joy in Penske land. Two cars owned by Penske, were forced to start from the back of this year's Indy 500 because of a cheating scandal. Penske has used racing to promote his transportation businesses. He's won a lot a lot at the Indianapolis 500 races as a team owner (20, actually). He has also been a winner in NASCAR. Still, given Penske's age, there the question of succession at Indy, both the speedway and the race series. The speedway is close to downtown Indianapolis and comprises valuable real estate. The question is whether the new deal with Fox begins to answer those succession questions. 'We're thrilled to join the IndyCar ownership group at such a pivotal time for the sport,' Eric Shanks, CEO and executive producer of Fox Sports, said in the statement. 'IndyCar represents everything we value in live sports — passionate fans, iconic venues, elite competition and year-round storytelling potential.'

US hotel room construction hits 20-quarter low: CoStar
This story was originally published on Hotel Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Hotel Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: The volume of U.S. hotel rooms under construction decreased year over year for a sixth consecutive month in June, according to new CoStar data. As of last month, there were 138,922 U.S. hotel rooms under construction, a 20-quarter low, according to Isaac Collazo, senior director of analytics at CoStar subsidiary STR. The volume of rooms under construction decreased 11.9% year over year in June, per CoStar. The continued decline is not surprising given 'hotel demand trending downward, unrelenting economic uncertainty and rising construction costs,' Collazo said. Most of the rooms under construction are in the upscale and upper upscale segments, which STR previously forecasted would see the highest RevPAR growth this year, driven by changing traveler behavior. Dive Insight: The volume of U.S. hotel rooms under construction has decreased each month since January, coinciding with President Donald Trump's second term. In those months, U.S. government actions have caused economic uncertainty, and tariffs have negatively impacted construction pipelines. The volume of U.S. hotel rooms in final planning (266,276 rooms) also decreased year over year in June, albeit only by 0.1%, according to CoStar. The number of U.S. hotel rooms in the planning stage (349,802 rooms), meanwhile, increased 4.8% year over year in the month. The majority of rooms in the U.S. hotel construction pipeline are in these two planning phases, but 'many will likely not be built in the near future,' Collazo said. Of rooms currently under construction, the majority are in the upscale and upper upscale segments, according to Collazo, who also noted that more than half of all rooms under development are in the South, largely outside of the top 25 markets. Higher-tier hotel segments were a bright spot for the industry last year, driving performance as high-income households prioritized travel. That trend has continued, with high-income households anticipated to make up nearly half of travelers this summer, Deloitte reported in May. Ahead of this year's Memorial Day weekend, travel outlooks appeared mostly stable despite a dip in consumer confidence and dampening international visitation. Last month, however, CoStar and Tourism Economics downgraded their 2025 and 2026 growth projections for U.S. hotel top-line performance metrics, citing elevated macroeconomic concerns.
