The Springbok Women's poor ball retention almost came back to bite them as they survived a late onslaught to hold off the Kenya Lionesses 19-12 in their Rugby Africa Women's Cup clash at the Stade Makis in Antananarivo, Madagascar on Wednesday.
The South Africans – who thrashed Uganda 62-7 in their tournament opener – were dominant in the opening 40 minutes, but could only muster 12 points from two tries and a conversion.
The Bok Women, who are using the tournament as preparation for the World Cup in September, got stuck into the Kenyans from the start.
The forwards, with the likes of tighthead prop Nombuyekezo Mdliki, captain and lock Anathi Qolo and hooker Luchell Hanekom prominent, made serious inroads on attack with their strong carries, and they were backed up by backs such as wing Patience Mokone and fullback Byrhandré Dolf.
But the Bok Women battled to finish off a number of attacking moves, with their handling letting them down as they either lost possession or conceded breakdown turnover or penalty at crucial times inside the Kenyan 22.
That trend continued in the second half, and despite enjoying a healthy advantage in the scrums and playing with great physicality, SA were met with courageous defence by the determined Kenyans.
The Bok Women started off well enough, with powerful centre Aphiwe Ngwevu charging over from close range after a clever inside pass from flyhalf Mary Zulu.
But the South Africans had to wait until the 35th minute to add to their tally, when red-haired wing Mokone's dazzling run was finished off by flank Lerato Makua.

The defending champions never looked in any danger of losing the game despite their frustrating time on attack, and replacement loose forward Nobuhle Mjwara's touchdown with less than 15 minutes to go seemed to seal the victory.
But Kenya never gave up, and two late tries led to a thrilling finish.
Wing Freshia Awino got the East Africans on the scoreboard with good pace down the left flank, and a few minutes later, replacement prop Noleen Khaleyi dived over after a stunning counter-attack from inside their own half.
Suddenly it was 19-12 with five minutes to go, and the South Africans looked like they had lost their grip on the encounter.
But the Bok Women managed to close out the game without any further drama.
Assistant coaches Bafana Nhleko and Franzel September – who are managing the team in this event in the absence of head coach Swys de Bruin – will hope to see the players be much more decisive with ball-in-hand in their third match against hosts Madagascar on Sunday (2pm SA time start) in what is sure to be in front of a partisan home crowd.
Points-Scorers
Springbok Women 19 – Tries: Aphiwe Ngwevu, Lerato Makua, Nobuhle Mjwara. Conversions: Mary Zulu (2).
Kenya Lionesses 12 – Tries: Freshia Awino, Noleen Khaleyi. Conversion: Sinaida Nyachio (1).

How Springbok Women used forward power to stun Black Ferns XV

In their final tune-up before the Women's Rugby World Cup, the Springbok Women powered to a convincing 41–24 win over the Black Ferns XV at Athlone Stadium. The result evened up the series and injected fresh momentum into their RWC campaign. The Springbok Women dominated from whistle to whistle, using their powerful forwards to open holes and their scrum to earn penalties at will. They scored seven tries to New Zealand's four, showing clear dominance in physicality and execution . They struck first in the 14th minute when Ayanda Malinga snatched up a loose ball and sprinted through open space to touch down out wide. Just three minutes later, fullback Byrhandré Dolf seized on space behind a broken defensive line and executed a perfect grubber to score under pressure . The Black Ferns responded through centre Kelsey Teneti, who cut through at pace to register New Zealand's first try. Yet By halftime the home side led 24–12 thanks to quick replies from flyhalf Libbie Janse van Rensburg and prop Yonela Ngxingolo, both finishing strong moves after pressure deep in the 22. Early in the second half, Black Ferns hooker Luka Connor barged over to narrow the gap to five points. But South Africa answered swiftly, using tried-and-tested lineout maul tactics: hooker Lindelwa Gwala and flanker Lerato Makua forced their way over in successive mauls, extending the lead to 29–19. New Zealand's Justine McGregor scored her side's fourth try off a slick backs move, reducing the margin to 36–24. But a final push from the Bomb Squad yielded replacement hooker Luchell Hanekom's score after a TMO review and sent-off decision, sealing the 41–24 result. Coach Swys de Bruin praised his side's mental switch from the previous Test. He highlighted their execution of tactical changes and said the win leaves the team nearly where they want to be before the World Cup. 'The team really played well tonight and executed the tweaks we made very well, and that delivered not only a winning result, but also a boost of confidence to the squad and management. 'We worked hard to get to this point, and I can honestly say this was one of the best performances we had since I joint the squad just over a year ago.' This landmark win gives the team confidence and clarity ahead of their World Cup opener against Brazil. Their combination of physical dominance, pin-point execution, and tactical control points to serious intent on the global stage. 'I think we are now close to where we wanted to be a few weeks out from the Rugby World Cup,' said De Bruin. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Absolutely brilliant: AB de Villiers leads SA to World Championship of Legends title

Former Proteas captain AB de Villiers scored a stunning 120 not out off 60 balls to lead the South African 'champions' team to victory in the World Championship of Legends final in Birmingham, England, yesterday. De Villiers and his team beat the Pakistan champions team of Mohammed Hafeez by nine wickets with 19 balls remaining to lift the trophy at the tournament for the first time. The SA team's captain's score of 120 was his third century in four matches at the tournament. He ended as the competition's leading run scorer with 429 runs. De Villiers' other big scores at the tournament were 63, 116 and 123. De Villiers was given something of a life halfway through his innings when he was 'caught' in the deep, but a TMO overruled the decision, deciding the ball had bounced before the batter was 'caught'. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Pakistan scored 195/5 runs in their 20 overs. Sharjeel Khan, who scored 76 off 44 balls, was Pakistan's best batter, while Hardus Viljoen and Wayne Parnell got two wickets each for South Africa. Besides De Villiers, JP Duminy (50 not out off 28 balls) also scored well for the South Africans and ensured there were no late jitters. This article first appeared in The Citizen. Farrell's Lions fall short of greatness after conquering Australia

The British & Irish Lions had already done enough to assure their legacy before their dream of a 3-0 series triumph was washed away in a maelstrom of lightning, rain and defiant Australians on Saturday night. Lions Test series triumphs are rare and the 2025 squad captained by Maro Itoje and coached by Andy Farrell will take their rightful place alongside the esteemed post-war tourists of 1971, 1974, 1989, 1997 and 2013. 'I know we're disappointed but we should be unbelievably proud of what we achieved as a group,' Farrell said after the 22-12 defeat. 'Lions tours are tough and ... upon reflection after tonight, I'm sure we'll be super proud of the achievements. 'How we got the job done in that type of theatre will live with us forever. These lads have been an absolute dream to work with. It's been the time of our lives.' In fact, had the Lions reproduced their dominance of the first hour of the Brisbane opener and final 50 minutes in Melbourne to take a third Test win in Sydney, it might only have diminished their achievement in taking out the series. Starting with Ben Youngs last year, there have been plenty of voices suggesting that Australian rugby has fallen so far that the country no longer deserves the honour of the Lions' visit every 12 years. Those voices were noticeably absent from the Lions camp during a series where the two teams were separated by only a single point over the three tests. Lions coach Farrell is convinced his old friend and mentor Joe Schmidt is building something special in Australia and if he is correct, it may be a couple of years before the achievement of his squad is fully appreciated. 'Come the 2027 World Cup they're going to be a force to be reckoned with, 100%,' Farrell said this week. 'It would be tragic not to tour here. We've had a blast.' Farrell may have been formed as a player in rugby league but the Englishman has shown over the last eight weeks that few understand the spirit and dynamics of the Lions better.
