Time of India4 days ago

PUNE: Southern Army Commander Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth on Tuesday reviewed the operational readiness of the Air Defence Brigade that played a crucial role in countering the enemy's aerial threats during Operation Sindoor.
The commander was also briefed on important operational issues, including key capability enhancements, ongoing training, and various procurement initiatives undertaken to enhance the brigade's fighting prowess.
This was the first visit of the Army Commander to the brigade, which played a key role in countering Pakistani missiles and drones during Operation Sindoor last month in the area of responsibility of the command in Rajasthan.

"The Army Commander lauded the brigade's professionalism, technological innovation efforts, and operational excellence displayed during #OperationSindoor, and exhorted all ranks to stay aligned with #IndianArmy's vision of a modern, agile, and adaptive force," stated Southern Command on its official X handle.
The Air Defence Brigade at Dehu Road is a key formation of the command, which covers 40% of India's land mass and is the largest Army command.

"The brigade is equipped with all necessary equipment, including highly capable air radars that are capable of countering air targets well before they reach their airspace. It also has automated command and control systems and well-proven defensive and offensive systems to meet the operational requirements of the command. In fact, the brigade played a critical role during Op Sindoor and showed its prowess in all spheres of air defence," a senior Army Air Defence (AAD) officer told TOI.
The brigade's motto of 'First to Strike' is derived from its role and responsibility in the Southern sector, and it proved its efficacy during Op Sindoor, said the sources.
The brigade also has a variety of weapons systems, including L-70 guns, which are capable of countering aerial threats such as drones, missiles, and low-flying aircraft. It has static installations to counter low-flying threats.
"The brigade has also been operating the modernised Schilka system, which has advanced firepower systems and thermal imaging sights. It is capable of tracking and neutralising multiple aerial threats," added the officer.
The Dehu Road ADB brigade was raised on December 20, 1994. It was the first formation to come about after the bifurcation of the Air Defence from the Regiment of Artillery, responsible with its units for air defence of the Southern skies.

Earthquake of magnitude 4.5 jolts Pakistan

An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 jolted Pakistan on Sunday, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said. As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks. In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.5, On: 29/06/2025 08:02:51 IST, Lat: 30.24 N, Long: 69.86 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025년 가장 여유 넘치는 농장 게임. 설치 없음 Taonga: 아일랜드 팜 플레이하기 Undo Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Further details are awaited. Live Events Earlier in the day, another earthquake of magnitude 5.2 on the Richter Scale jolted Pakistan in the wee hours. In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 5.2, On: 29/06/2025 03:54:02 IST, Lat: 30.25 N, Long: 69.82 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Pakistan." Prior to that, another earthquake of magnitude 4.4 jolted the region, as per NCS. In a post on X, the NCS stated, "EQ of M: 4.4, On: 15/06/2025 23:42:42 IST, Lat: 28.85 N, Long: 67.72 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan." Pakistan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major faults. As a result, earthquakes in Pakistan often occur and are destructive. Pakistan geologically overlaps both the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan provinces lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate on the Iranian Plateau. Sindh, Punjab and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir provinces lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate in South Asia. Hence, this region is prone to violent earthquakes as the two tectonic plates collide.

The death toll of 260 includes 241 passengers and crew aboard the plane and 19 people on the ground. The figure is lower than the earlier estimate of 270 deaths. That's why all FSL teams from Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot were immediately mobilized to Gandhinagar to expedite the DNA profiling process and ensure the swift handover of the victims' bodies to their families." Later on Saturday, state health minister Rushikesh Patel said, "A total of 260 deceased have been identified in the plane crash so far, including 254 through DNA tests and 6 through facial recognition, all of which have been handed over to their families." Live Events Among the 260 people, 181 are Indian citizens, seven have been identified as Portuguese, 52 are British nationals, one Canadian and 19 non-passengers. The Air India flight to London crashed soon after taking off on 12 June from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, destroying portions of a medical college building and bursting into flames. Among the victims were junior doctors, staff at the hospital complex and people on the street below. One passenger, walked out of the crash after he was thrown further away from the burning wreckage. The impact of the crash and the inferno that followed meant remains of most victims, except for most of the 19 casualties on the ground, were unrecognisable, requiring officials to seek DNA samples from family members to help make the identification. Among the 260 deaths, 254 victims were identified through DNA testing and the remaining through facial recognition. The DNA identification process, which typically takes months, was completed in approximately two weeks, experts said.
