
Six months on, Pune-Bengaluru greenfield expressway project awaits Centre's nod

The proposed expressway, part of the central government's Bharatmala Pariyojana road project, is designed to span approximately 745 kilometres, connecting Pune to Bengaluru through 12 districts, three in Maharashtra and nine in Karnataka. It will begin at Kanjale village on the proposed Pune Ring Road and pass through Satara and Sangli in Maharashtra. In Karnataka, it will traverse the districts, mainly Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Vijayanagar, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, and Bengaluru Rural before reaching Bengaluru city.
Originally envisioned as a six-lane corridor, the expressway has since been upgraded to an eight-lane configuration to accommodate future traffic growth. The high-speed corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Pune and Bengaluru, currently taking 12 to 14 hours via the existing national highway, to 6 to 7 hours.
According to NHAI officials, of the approximately 21,000 acres needed for the project, 7,166 acres will be acquired in Maharashtra and Karnataka will contribute about 12,355 acres.
'I run a logistics company that sends goods between Pune and Bengaluru. Our business is hit because of delays and traffic jams on the existing highway. The proposed greenfield expressway will be a lifeline for thousands of commuters and businesses,' said Rajendra Patil, who runs firm based in Pune's industrial belt.

Advanced Transport Mgmt System to start on 3 h'ways
Pune: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will soon introduce the Advanced Transport Management System (ATMS) on three national highways that connect to the city, senior officials told TOI on Friday. These three routes include the Pune-Solapur Highway, Pune-Nashik Highway, and Pune-Satara Highway. The ATMS is a set of technologies and software used to improve efficiency, safety, and reliability of transport networks. It integrates various systems like traffic sensors, cameras, and communication for real-time traffic information. "A proposal pertaining to this has been sent to the Union ministry of road transport and highways, and we expect approval soon. With this system being introduced, we aim to check for different traffic violations and the exact causes of congestion on these highways," a senior NHAI official in Pune told TOI. "These cameras will have a range of 500m on all sides. In addition, modern cameras will be placed every 500m at gantries of the road. These AI-enabled cameras will be able to spot any violations and read the registration number of the vehicles involved, following which an e-challan will be generated automatically without any manual intervention," the official added. While the Pune-Nashik Highway is approximately 213km long, Pune-Satara Highway is around 141km long; the Pune-Solapur Highway is 246km in length. Another NHAI official said the new system is similar to the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC).

Nagpur-Bhandara Six-Lane Work To Begin In 4 Months: Gadkari
1 2 Nagpur: The much-delayed widening of the Nagpur-Bhandara road into a six-lane highway is expected to commence within the next three to four months, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Saturday. The project had been held up due to issues with a BOT (build-operate-transfer) operator, whose contract has now been terminated. Addressing an event in Bhandara, Gadkari said the road had witnessed 54 fatalities and over 225 injuries due to delays in improvement work. "The detailed project report (DPR) is ready, and as land acquisition requirements are minimal, the work should begin soon," he said. The minister was in Bhandara to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for various road infrastructure projects worth Rs1,053 crore under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the state Public Works Department (PWD). He underlined that infrastructure growth is the foundation of comprehensive regional development. Gadkari also inaugurated the 14.8-km six-lane Bhandara Bypass—part of NH-53—built at a cost of Rs735 crore. The bypass includes three major bridges, one across the Wainganga River, and two animal underpasses at Bhilewada. Officials said the bypass will help reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity for local commuters and long-distance travellers alike. Recalling his student days, Gadkari said the earlier bridge over Wainganga would routinely submerge, disrupting travel. "After becoming a minister, I ensured construction of a new bridge, which is now part of the upgraded bypass," he said. He also emphasized Bhandara's potential as a hub for tourism, agriculture, and industry, citing natural assets like Nagzira forests and Navegaon Dam. Gadkari revealed that a Rs20 crore watercraft is being procured from Russia to facilitate water transport from Bhandara to Ambhora via the Wainganga River. He added that the region's mineral wealth and forest resources hold immense promise for generating local employment and boosting economic activity.

NH construction in Himachal on track; state govt failed to use funds: Nadda
The construction of three out of four National Highways is in an advanced stage in Himachal Pradesh and major works would be completed in the next two years, Union Health Minister J P Nadda said in Bilaspur on Saturday. About 2,593 km long, four National Highways are being constructed in the state at an estimated cost of about Rs 38,000 crore. Addressing reporters, Nadda also lashed out at the state government for not utilising the funds allocated by the Union government. "The construction of three NHs is in an advanced stage and major works would be completed in 2026 and 2027 while the project for which Detailed Project Report (DPR) is under preparation would be completed in 2028", he said. Barring the Shimla-Mator National Highway for which preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) is underway and completion is slated for 2028, the Parwanoo-Shimla, Kiratpur-Manali and Pathankot-Mandi National Highways would be completed in 2026 and 2027, he added. Nadda raised the issue of the state government treating the construction of roads at par with industries, mandating no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Pollution Control Board every year which delays the work and argued that setting of crushers and burning of charcoal for metalling is temporary and stops after the works are completed. "Union Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari has already discussed the issue with the state government and I will also take up the matter with chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu", Nadda said and also cautioned that if the 'dredging' of River Beas, which is responsibility of the state government was not done, the Highways constructed by the NHAI would suffer huge damage. When asked about the complaints by the people whose properties have been affected during construction by NHAI, Nadda said that these would be disposed of on a case-by-case basis, adding that the government was sensitive and receptive about these issues. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday said that large companies were often awarded contracts based solely on their machinery, but they lack understanding of the fragile hill terrain of the state. As a result, they conduct hill-cutting as per their convenience, which causes damage. He advised NHAI to consider awarding such contracts to local contractors familiar with the region. The statement came after a five-storey building and a retaining wall near Kaithlighat-Dhalli four lane in the suburbs of Shimla collapsed in the ongoing week and residents cited negligence of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) as the main reason behind the damage. Nadda said that an atmosphere is being created by the state government that the Centre was not helping the state government but in fact the state government has failed to fully utilised the central funds and pointed out that under PM Health Infra-structure mission only 21 per cent has been spent while only 24 per cent of the funds allocated by the 15the Finance Commission for health have been utilised. Nadda also referred to the projects worth crores announced by Union minister Kiran Rijiju for tribal and remote areas and said that he got the Rs 1,000 crore JICA project sanctioned from Economic Affairs ministry under which the contribution of the state government would be only Rs 149 crore and the remaining cost would be borne by the Centre. He said that the Union government stood firmly with Himachal during the natural calamities in 2023 and released Rs 1,700 crore while Rs 1,000 crore have been announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah for losses suffered during the ongoing monsoon fury.
