Dubai solar park's 6th phase reaches 53% completion, 600MW operational

Zawya04-03-2025
The sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world's largest single-site solar park, has reached 53 percent completion, with 600 megawatts (MW) out of its total 1,800MW capacity already operational, according to an update from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
The project is being developed by Shuaa Energy 4, a joint venture between DEWA (60 percent) and Masdar (40 percent), under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.
The 5.5 billion UAE dirhams ($1.5 billion) IPP project spans 20 square kilometres and utilises bifacial solar photovoltaic (PV) technology with single-axis tracking to enhance energy output, DEWA said in a press statement.
Once fully operational, this phase will supply clean energy to approximately 540,000 residences and cut 2.36 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
The sixth phase achieved Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) of US$1.6215 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), which is the lowest price for the solar park's phases. The financial close was achieved in February 2024.
DEWA said in August 2023 that the project would be operationised in stages starting from the fourth quarter of 2024.
Currently, the solar park's total production capacity stands at 3,460MW, with an additional 1,200MW under construction.
By 2030, its total capacity will reach 7,260MW, contributing 34 percent of Dubai's total energy mix and advancing Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.

DEWA encourages travellers to activate ‘Away Mode' for smart water, energy use this summer

Dubai, UAE: As part of its 'Expand Your Smart Choices This Summer' campaign, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has urged its residential customers to activate the 'Away Mode' feature before travelling. This feature helps ensure efficient electricity and water use by allowing customers to monitor their electricity and water use while travelling. It can be activated through DEWA's website and smart app, with options to select the service activation period. The 'Away Mode' feature also provides daily or weekly data by email, thus facilitating early intervention and reducing waste. DEWA also recommends turning off all lights and setting timers for garden and exterior floodlights before travelling. Additionally, customers should close water valves and inspect for potential leaks through regular maintenance of electricity and water connections. DEWA recommends using specialised technicians for maintenance work. Through the DEWA Store on its smart app, customers can hire reliable technical service providers in the event of internal building faults. Furthermore, DEWA advises customers to benefit from the digital services and features it provides within the Smart Living initiative to reduce waste. This initiative allows customers to monitor their bills and tariff brackets, and to track electricity and water consumption daily, weekly and monthly through a dedicated data panel. The Consumption Assessment Tool helps customers analyse their consumption patterns and identify opportunities for enhancement, providing a detailed report and customised tips to boost efficiency. The High-Water Usage Alert service instantly notifies customers of unusual consumption beyond the meter, helping them to identify detect leaks early on. DEWA launched the 'Expand Your Smart Choices This Summer' campaign in June to raise awareness of its innovative digital tools that allow customers to proactively monitor consumption and adopt a more efficient, sustainable lifestyle, particularly during the summer. General tips and guidelines on consumption management can be found on DEWA's smart app and website, under 'Consumption Management During Summer'.

AppleCare One: Features, benefits, and what it means for consumers

Image credit: Apple/Website Apple on July 23 introduced AppleCare One, a new service plan designed to provide simple, flexible coverage for multiple Apple devices under a single subscription. For $19.99 per month, customers can protect up to three Apple products, with the option to add more devices at $5.99 per month each. The new plan builds on the features of AppleCare+ and expands protection across devices including iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. US customers can sign up for AppleCare One starting tomorrow through their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or by visiting an Apple Store, Read- 'At Apple, we're focused on creating and delivering exceptional experiences,' said Bob Borchers, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. 'Built on the trusted foundation of AppleCare+, AppleCare One extends that same reliability and makes it easier than ever to protect the products you love and depend on.' All-in-one coverage and support AppleCare One offers all the benefits of AppleCare+, including unlimited accidental damage repairs for incidents like drops and spills, 24/7 priority access to Apple experts, certified repairs, and battery service. Notably, theft and loss coverage, previously limited to iPhone, has been expanded to include iPad and Apple Watch. The plan's pricing structure remains the same regardless of which devices are enrolled. According to Apple, users could save up to $11 per month compared to purchasing separate AppleCare+ plans for each device. Add existing devices, up to four years old In a notable shift from Apple's previous policy, customers can now add eligible devices they already own, as long as they're in good working condition and up to four years old. This expands protection opportunities beyond the typical 60-day purchase window for AppleCare+. Flexible management for a growing collection AppleCare One also streamlines plan management. When a user trades in a covered product directly to Apple, the device is automatically removed from their plan and replaced with the new one. As a month-to-month subscription, customers can keep coverage going indefinitely and can adjust which devices are covered at any time. Apple says AppleCare One is ideal for users with multiple Apple devices who want comprehensive protection, convenience, and predictable monthly costs, all from a brand they trust.

Acronis Reveals Malware Targeting Middle East Gamers

Home » Emerging technologies » Gaming » Acronis Reveals Malware Targeting Middle East Gamers Acronis has revealed details of a sophisticated malware campaign targeting consumers, particularly gamers, across the Middle East. The Acronis Threat Research Unit (TRU) reported that the attackers are exploiting the rising popularity of online gaming in the region, which is valued at over US$7 billion and continues to grow rapidly. The malware campaign focuses on users aged 18–35 and spreads through platforms like Discord. Victims are lured with fake beta versions of indie games such as Baruda Quest , Warstorm Fire , and Dire Talon . Instead of actual games, users unknowingly download infostealer malware like Leet Stealer, RMC Stealer, and Sniffer Stealer. According to Acronis researchers, the malware steals sensitive data including login credentials, payment information, and crypto wallets. This can lead to account takeovers, financial loss, and extortion. The campaign is notable for targeting individuals rather than corporate networks. Affected countries include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye Malware is often spread through fake game promotions on Discord and YouTube Jozsef Gegeny, Senior Researcher at Acronis TRU, stated that the team uncovered the threat by analyzing suspicious files and websites disguised as legitimate game content. Many of these files were not detected by major antivirus tools. The campaign was first detected in Brazil and the United States but has now expanded globally. The Middle East has become a hotspot due to its young, digitally active gaming population. Attackers use fake branding, promotional sites, and even dedicated YouTube channels to distribute the malware. Some installers display fake errors to hide their real intent. Acronis urges gamers to remain vigilant and download games only from official or verified developer websites. They also recommend enabling multi-factor authentication for added security. Gegeny added that even tech-savvy users can fall victim to such threats, especially when malware evades mainstream security tools.
