Cambodia bans Thai fruit, vegetables in border spat
One Cambodian soldier was killed on May 28 as troops exchanged fire in a disputed area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos meet.
The Thai and Cambodian armies both said they acted in self-defence.
Thailand has imposed border restrictions with Cambodia in recent days, while Cambodia banned Thai dramas from TV and cinemas, closed a popular border checkpoint, and cut internet bandwidth from Thailand.
On Monday, Cambodia's influential former leader Hun Sen Monday issued an ultimatum to Thailand to lift border crossing restrictions within 24 hours or face a ban on all Thai fruit and vegetable imports.
Cambodian authorities said Tuesday their Thai counterparts still imposed the border restrictions, and Hun Sen's ultimatum took effect.
'We have implemented the ban on imports of Thai fruit and vegetables since this morning,' Sok Veasna, director general of the General Department of Immigration, told AFP.
He said visitors could still cross the border between the two countries.
Cambodia has formally asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to help resolve the border dispute in four areas -- the site of last month's clash and three ancient temples.
Hun Sen said on Monday that his country had to go to the ICJ because Cambodia wanted 'peace' as the two countries would never reach an agreement in the four areas.
Hun Sen also called on tens of thousands of Cambodian migrants working in Thailand to return home, saying they would face increasing discrimination as the border spat drags on.
The row dates back to the drawing of the countries' 800-kilometre (500-mile) frontier in the early 20th century during the French occupation of Indochina.
Cambodia has previously sought help from the ICJ in a territorial dispute over a border temple.
In 1962, the court ruled then the disputed Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia and in 2013, the ICJ awarded an area next to the temple to Cambodia too.
Thailand said it did not accept the court's jurisdiction.
Violence sparked by the dispute has led to 28 deaths in the region since 2008.

PARIS: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in Paris to begin his maiden official visit to France. The aircraft carrying Anwar and his delegation landed at Pavillon d'Honneur Orly Airport at 4.10pm local time from Rome. KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has embarked on an inaugural official visit to France from July 3 to 4 at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. Malaysia's Ambassador to France Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim said the visit carries an official status and signifies France's strong commitment towards its diplomatic ties with Malaysia since Anwar assumed premiership in 2022. "This official visit status is also significant for the continued strengthening of our bilateral diplomatic ties," he said to the Malaysian media through an online conference from Paris on Wednesday. Eldeen Husaini said Anwar would be received by the French top leadership at the airport, followed by an inspection of a guard of honour and an engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in France. Anwar is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with Macron at the Élysée Palace, with key agenda items including trade, investment, renewable energy, semiconductors, defence, education, digital economy, and artificial intelligence (AI). New Delhi says fuel ban on old vehicles not feasible
NEW DELHI: Two days after India's capital stopped fuel sales to ageing vehicles to tackle the sprawling megacity's hazardous air pollution, authorities on Thursday said the ban was not practical. New Delhi is regularly ranked as one of the most polluted capitals globally with vehicular emissions being one of the worst offenders, according to several studies. At the peak of the smog, levels of PM2.5 pollutants -- dangerous cancer-causing microparticles small enough to enter the bloodstream through the lungs -- surge to more than 60 times the World Health Organization's recommended daily maximum. The fuel restriction was introduced Tuesday to reinforce an already-existing but widely disregarded ban on petrol cars older than 15 years, and diesel vehicles older than 10. But Delhi's environment minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, told reporters the fuel ban was not feasible because of 'crucial issues related to technological glitches'. Number plate-recognising cameras and loudspeakers installed at fuelling stations were 'malfunctioning', Sirsa said, leading to 'fights and arguments'. The ban had resulted in public 'discontent', he added. Sirsa said he had written to the area's pollution control authority, explaining the problems in implementing the ban. 'Unless there is a robust system and the ban is everywhere, it will not work,' he added. The ban was to be extended to satellite cities around the capital, an area home to more than 32 million people, from November. A study in The Lancet medical journal attributed 1.67 million premature deaths in India to air pollution in 2019. Each winter, vehicle and factory emissions coupled with farm fires from surrounding states wrap the city in a dystopian haze. Cooler temperatures and slow-moving winds worsen the situation by trapping deadly pollutants. Piecemeal government initiatives, such as partial restrictions on fossil fuel-powered transport and water trucks spraying mist to clear particulate matter from the air, have failed to make a noticeable impact. – AFP
