2026 Land Rover Defender Octa Black Is a More Sinister 626-HP SUV

Car and Driver6 hours ago
The 2026 Land Rover Defender Octa Black is the newest variation of the range-topping Defender.
Land Rover says 30 exterior components are finished in either gloss or satin black, with the exterior painted in Narvik Black.
The Octa Black follows the rest of the 2026 Defender lineup with new headlights and taillights as well as a new 13.1-inch center touchscreen.
Along with giving the 2026 Defender its first facelift since the nameplate returned to the United States in 2020, Land Rover is also adding a new visual package for the iconic model. It's called the Defender Octa Black, and Land Rover says it's an even bolder look for the range-topping model.
A Blacked-Out Octa
As the name implies, the Octa Black takes the newest Defender and covers every inch of it in black paint. Land Rover says that 30 exterior elements were given the Rolling Stones treatment. That includes the scuff plates, recovery hooks, exhaust tips, Land Rover badges, wheels, and brake calipers finished in a variation of satin or gloss black. The exterior bodywork is finished in Narvik Black, which the automaker calls the "truest black" in the Defender lineup.
Land Rover
The interior maintains the theme, with carbon-fiber trim throughout. The crossbar spanning the dashboard features satin black, the leather seats are finished in an ebony color, and the armrests and seatbacks use Carpathian Grey.
As it's joining the lineup for 2026, updates to the Octa Black follow the rest of the Defender lineup. For the outside, that means newly standard fog lights, a new LED graphic for the headlights, and taillights that now sit flush with the body. Inside, the Octa Black gets a new 13.1-inch center touchscreen, which replaces the old 10.0-inch unit.

Land Rover
Power is unchanged from the standard Octa. A twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 sits under the hood and pumps out 626 horsepower. Given that a 518-hp V-8-equipped Defender 90 we tested hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, we expect the Octa can make the same sprint in fewer than 4.0 seconds.
Official pricing and availability haven't yet been announced, but we don't expect the price to stray too far from the current Octa's $153,625 jumping-off point.

Slate Auto's electric pickup is no longer ‘under $20,000' — thanks, Donald

Slate Auto's American-made electric pickup — the one with no paint, no stereo, and no touchscreen — is no longer priced 'under $20,000.' The increase is a result of Trump's 'Big, beautiful bill,' which will end the federal EV tax credits on September 30th when signed into law later today. That sub-$20,000 price for the Indiana-built pickup was a big selling point for the EV startup backed by Jeff Bezos, and was only possible after applying the $7,500 tax credit to the retail price. The price promotion was scrubbed from the Slate Auto site as recently as yesterday, according to TechCrunch. The website now shows an expected price of 'mid-twenties.' Slate's under $20,000 price tag for a vehicle it won't start delivering until late 2026 was always accompanied by an asterisk, with fine print highlighting federal incentives that were 'subject to change.' And change was certainly expected: Trump campaigned heavily on the promise to end President Biden's fictitious 'EV mandate,' because electric cars are for socialists in MAGA world. Trump's embrace of oil and gas, while simultaneously dismantling incentives meant to spur the adoption of EVs and clean energies, is a gift to Chinese makers of electric cars, solar panels, and batteries. The US is now on course to own the past while China is firmly positioned to dominate the future.

Caitlyn Jenner's manager Sophia Hutchins dies

Caitlyn Jenner's longtime friend and manager, Sophia Hutchins, has died in a vehicle accident. According to editors at TMZ, the businesswoman was driving an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) on the road where Caitlyn lives in Malibu, California on Wednesday morning when she "struck the bumper of a moving car". The impact of the collision forced the ATV over the shoulder of the road, and Sophia plummeted approximately 350 feet (100 metres) into a ravine. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene. She was 29. The two people in the other car weren't injured. It's unclear if Caitlyn, 75, was at home at the time of the tragic accident. Representatives for the media personality have not yet commented on the sad news. Sophia and Caitlyn met in 2015 - around the time the retired athlete came out as a transgender woman. The socialite appeared in several episodes of the TV documentary series, I Am Cait, and previously served as the chief executive officer of the Caitlyn Jenner Foundation. More recently, Sophia founded LUMASOL, a company that makes sunscreen mist products.
