What Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan bring to Rangers' lineup following trade from Avalanche
Knowing that they'll likely be unable to retain them in unrestricted free agency this offseason, New York decided to send defenseman Ryan Lindgren and versatile winger Jimmy Vesey to the Colorado Avalanche.
In return, New York is receiving veteran defenseman Calvin de Hahn, young center Juuso Parssinen, a conditional second-round pick, and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft.
Parting ways with two of their veteran pieces is certainly a big blow in the Blueshirts' locker room, but they are also picking up a pair of intriguing pieces who are expected to slot into the starting lineup immediately.
So what exactly should Rangers fans expect from their new additions?
De Haan is a former first-round pick of the Islanders who has appeared in 676 games with five different teams over the course of his pro career. He hasn't quite been able to live up to his draft status, but provides a serviceable veteran option on the backend for a team that badly needs the help.
He has just seven assists this season, but feels if you can look past that, his overall game has been much better.
'My stats aren't too sexy, but my underlying numbers have been pretty good for the most part this year,' de Haan said Sunday. 'I'm just try to play my game — play steady hockey, play reliable hockey, try to help the team win. At the end of the day, that's my job.'
De Haan is also an impending UFA, so it's entirely possible that in this heavy sellers market his stay in the Big Apple won't be long, but for now he is expected to slot in alongside Zac Jones on the bottom pairing
Parssinen, on the other hand, is said to be a player whom the Rangers have shown a ton of interest in acquiring in the past. In fact, they had discussions about him with the Nashville Predators before they ultimately shipped him off to Colorado earlier this season.
The 24-year-old actually scored his first career goal against the Blueshirts back in 2022.
Since then, he's produced just 18 goals and 30 assists during his professional career, but the organization believes that he posses the skillset and potential to grow into an impactful bottom-six center.
"A good young centerman," Peter Laviolette said. "He's been playing wing, but in conversations with him he wants to play center. Thinking back to Nashville, he played with some good players. This is a good opportunity to come in and show what he can do."
Parssinen will center the third line between Brennan Othmann and Jonny Brodzinski.

Can Motherwell follow-up strong opening day performance?
Former Scotland defender Charlie Mulgrew thinks a lack of quality in the final third could hinder Motherwell's top-six hopes. The Steelmen looked strong in their league opener against last year's runners-up Rangers, winning the ball back on the press and at times cutting the Glasgow side open with intricate passing play on their way to a 1-1 draw at home. However, Mulgrew thinks they can't get ahead of themselves, considering the timing of the fixture. Speaking to BBC's Scottish Football Podcast, he said: "I think it's easy to get carried away when you play Rangers or Celtic at the start of the season and get a result. "Motherwell are so good going through the lines, but I don't know if they have enough in the final third. "I think their style works better against a team like Rangers that will press high so they can play through them, but I don't imagine teams will do that often against them. Yankees-Padres trade idea would bring Dylan Cease to Bronx
The New York Yankees' starting rotation has been without Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil all season. Gil is slated to return, but the team could use reinforcements as they look to turn things around. The Yankees have also lost Clarke Schmidt for the season. They have not been a good team as of late, and may be interested in making a big move in hopes of getting back on track. Dylan Cease is a rental arm the Yankees could target. According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Padres would want a big league left fielder and/or catcher in return for a player like Cease. The Yankees could match up well in that regard, according to FanSided's Adam Weinrib. "If it's catching help the Padres want, the Yankees could dangle a package featuring JC Escarra or Rafael Flores, who is almost inarguably MLB-ready (though Jon Heyman begged them not to trade him)," wrote Weinrib. "If they'd prefer a left fielder, Trent Grisham could be available for the right price - and San Diego knows him well. Would both Escarra and Grisham packaged together net them Cease? What about either one of them, paired with a minor-league righty like Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz or Bryce Cunningham?" Cease is not having his best year, and is a few months away from hitting the open market. He has a 4.79 ERA in 22 starts and has notched 153 strikeouts. Perhaps a change of scenery could get him back on finished fourth in the National League Cy Young Award race last year. He was the American League Cy Young Award runner-up in 2022.
