Boca raced into a 2-0 lead through Miguel Merential and Rodrigo Battaglia.
Benfica fought back to draw the game after goals from Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi.
However, it was the poor discipline on show that added to the excitement of the clash.
Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera was shown a red card despite having been subbed off, while Andrea Belotti was dismissed for Benfica.

Jorge Figal was also sent off by referee Cesar Arturo Ramos in the closing stages.
But there was some confusion as the Mexican official appeared to flash either a bank note or a playing card when showing the red.

A fourth guessed: "It's an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe - a religious symbol in Mexico."
A fifth joked: "Probably the keycard to his hotel room."
Another added: "Glorious haha."
Ramos quickly realised his gaffe as he could be seen grabbing the item and put it back into his pocket.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are the only English team to have played in the tournament so far.
The Blues ran out 2-0 winners against MLS outfit LAFC but tempers flared in that match too.
Goalscorer Pedro Neto had to be held back from scrapping with Denis Bouanga.

Guardiola unsure if Club World Cup will affect City's Premier League campaign

Pep Guardiola concedes he does not know if Manchester City's next Premier League challenge will be 'destroyed' by their Club World Cup campaign or not. England manager Thomas Tuchel recently said the involvement of City and Chelsea in this summer's tournament in the United States would hand the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal a 'huge advantage' in the title race. Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has also described the event as 'the worst idea ever implemented in football' because of concerns over player welfare. Guardiola, however, insists City – who face Al-Hilal in a last-16 tie in Orlando on Monday night (2am Tuesday UK) – are focused on rediscovering their best after a frustrating 2024-25 season and claiming the prize. The City manager said: 'I try to relax, enjoy the days here and the good vibes that we have, the competition and we try to win it. 'The most important thing is to recover and find within ourselves what we were. That's my main target in this tournament. 'I want them to feel that this is our path again to be competitive like we have been in eight of the last nine years. 'After this, let's see what happens. Let's see what happens after the final. We will rest for the time the Premier League allow us. 'Maybe in November, December or January it will be a disaster, we are exhausted and the World Cup has destroyed us. 'I don't know, it's the first time in our lives that this has happened. We will see when we come back.' Guardiola says he can understand the viewpoint of his old rival Klopp, now head of global soccer for Red Bull, who had a team involved in the tournament in Salzburg. Yet he suggested people complaining might be jealous. Speaking at a press conference, Guardiola said: 'I fought a lot with Jurgen many, many times. I know where his idea comes from. 'I respect him, I would defend his argument as well. At the same time, as managers, we are in a job. We don't organise the competitions. 'Once we are here, we are proud. Many, many teams complain about these competitions because they are not here, otherwise they might love being here.' Weather problems have been a recurring issue in the tournament both in terms of intense heat and thunderstorms. Chelsea's last-16 victory over Benfica on Saturday was suspended for almost two hours due to lightning in the vicinity. Guardiola said: 'I am an extraordinary manager but to control lightning and thunder, still I am not good enough! 'If it is (suspended) here the same reason as why they suspend the other one, I will go inside and we will continue to be active and play again. 'It is not the ideal situation but I grew up to understand not to be worried about the situations that I can't control. So no problem.'

Chelsea agree deal to sign Brighton striker Joao Pedro for reported £60m

It has also been reported the 23-year-old has agreed a seven-year deal with the Blues and could feature for them in the on-going Club World Cup after flying from Brazil to the US for his medical. Pedro could make his Chelsea debut in Friday's quarter-final clash against Palmeiras in Philadelphia. The Brazilian, who will become Chelsea's sixth summer signing, scored 10 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for Brighton last season. He has scored 30 goals and made 10 assists in 70 appearances in total for the Seagulls. Newcastle have been reported to have had a £50m bid for the striker last week turned down. Chelsea, who defeated Benfica 4-1 after extra time in Charlotte on Saturday night to reach the Club World Cup, have signed midfielder Kendry Paez, goalkeeper Mike Penders, winger Estevao Willian, striker Liam Delap and defender Mamadou Sarr since the end of last season. They are also reported to be poised to complete the £50m signing of winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.

Club World Cup could ‘destroy' Manchester City's season, says Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has admitted the Club World Cup could 'destroy' Manchester City's 2025-26 campaign, with the manager ignoring its potential impact to avoid feeling anxious. On Monday, City face Al-Hilal in the last 16 at Orlando's Camping World Stadium. While some of Guardiola's players had only five days off before the start of the tournament, others enjoyed a three-week break. All the squad can expect at least three weeks off following the Club World Cup. Earlier this month, England coach Thomas Tuchel stated that the champions, Liverpool, and Arsenal, who finished second, have a 'huge advantage' next term due to not being at the tournament in the United States. Guardiola was asked about the England boss's claim. 'I try not to think about it, otherwise I will be so anxious,' Guardiola said. 'We will rest the time the Premier League allows us to. And game by game, month by month, we will see. And maybe in November, December, January, ask me, Pep. I may say: 'So listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us.' I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened [32-team CWC]. So we will see. 'So I try to be relaxed, to enjoy the days here, the good vibes that we have, the competition, to try to win it. And the most important thing, to recover, to find or re-find ourselves what we were. This is my main target in this tournament.' At the weekend, Jürgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, stated that the tournament winners will be the 'worst of all time' due to the relentless schedule. Klopp is now head of global soccer for Red Bull, with one of the teams he oversees, Salzburg, eliminated at the group stage. Guardiola responded to the German. 'I know where his idea comes from,' he said. 'We fought a lot [together] when we went to the Uefa meetings [or] especially when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality to it. [We discussed] giving the managers and players more rest. So his comments [on the Club World Cup] didn't surprise me a lot. I understand him. I respect him. I've had an incredible relationship with Jurgen for many years as rivals. 'Now he's stepped back from that position [as a manager] and I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well. At the same time, as managers we are in a job. We follow the Fifa, Uefa, Premier League rules. 'Many, many teams complain about these competitions because they are not here, otherwise they might love being here. They would have their media and supporters here, and there would be income to be here, and they would be happy to be here. Of course, it's not an ideal situation for the manager. Would I love to have two months to prepare for next season? Yes. Would I love to be refreshed for next season? Yes. But it is what it is.' Guardiola laughed off any concern. 'I am an extraordinary manager but to control lightning and thunder, still I am not good enough,' he said. Al-Hilal's captain, Salem Al-Dawsari, and the No 9, Aleksandar Mitrović, are both unavailable due to injury.
