Joey Bada$$, Ab-Soul Trade Bars Amid Coastal Rhyme War With Ray Vaughn
The spark came Monday (May 12), during the season three premiere of Red Bull 1250's Spiral Freestyle series, which featured a rap session with Joey, Ab-Soul, and Big Sean. Though the cypher was billed as a celebration of lyricism, it quickly turned into something far more competitive.
While Big Sean held his own with a poised performance, it was Ab-Soul who addressed the undercurrent of regional tension head-on.
Aware of the ongoing discourse around Joey Bada$$'s comments—which some took as slighting the West Coast's current success—Soul stepped up with a diplomatic but direct verse.
He gave flowers to fellow West Coast emcees Daylyt and Ray Vaughn for their defense of the coast, while simultaneously cautioning Joey that any further escalation might not work in his favor.
'Lyt was heavy and Ray definitely stepped/ But this is hip-hop, you know we still on that/ It was healthy for the sport, sticking to the roots, keeping it competitive/ Just be lucky that Soul ain't stepping in,' Ab-Soul warned.
Joey Bada$$, known for his battle-ready pen, didn't hesitate to return fire. He delivered a pointed rebuttal that not only acknowledged the players involved but reaffirmed his commitment to lyrical warfare in the spirit of Hip-Hop—not hostility.
Channeling the ethos of Kendrick Lamar's infamous verse on Big Sean's 'Control', Joey made it clear that the perceived shade was never meant as a diss to the West Coast but as a challenge to rappers everywhere to step up.
'They don't want the war with the Martian, they sendin' they troops/ At the general, but I'm the one who Ab salute,' Joey rapped, cleverly flipping Ab-Soul's name into a double entendre.
He continued, spelling out his respect for the region while criticizing what he sees as overly sensitive responses.
'First off, I could never hate the West Coast/ But since ni**as comin' for Joe, f**k it then, let's go/ Ni**as must've forgot what Dot said on 'Control'/ There's still a buncha sensitive rappers in they pajama clothes.'
Joey saved some of his sharpest bars for Daylyt, making a biting reference to the rapper's infamous on-stage antics.
'I ain't gotta lose no sleep to break Daylyt (Chill)/ Shouldn't give you ni**as time of day/ But f**k it, shine a light on 'em, I'mma light Ray/ Now how can I say this all in a nice way?/ If you need the attention, tell Top he gotta pay.'
The genesis of the rhyme war between Joey Bada$$ and Ray Vaughn stems from Joey's 2025 single 'The Ruler's Back,' in which he lamented the perceived fawning over West Coast Hip-Hop in light of Kendrick Lamar's victory over Drake.
This jab caused Vaughn to clap back with his own record, 'Crashout Heritage,' in which he responded to Joey and other figures, whereas Daylyt took his own approach with the track 'Hiyu.'
While both artists insist this is all in the name of Hip-Hop, their spirited exchange has become the latest chapter in rap's storied history of competitive bravado—reminding fans that when it comes to bars, coastlines don't matter as much as the fire behind the mic.

Crocs just teased a majorly punk designer collab — and we're so ready for it
Welcome to your one-stop shop for the biggest fashion news and announcements, as curated by the Cosmo team. Check back in for regular updates. Thank us later! Jean Paul Gaultier x Crocs is happening Yes, you read that correctly. Following in the footsteps of Simone Rocha and Balenciaga, today Crocs announced it would be teaming up with legendary French fashion label Jean Paul Gaultier. The collection will take inspiration from the house's most recognisable designs, such as the iconic corset and cone bra made famous by Madonna and Gaultier's signature safety pin motif. We've got no further details at this stage, but the collection will be available to shop in August, so there's not too long to wait. Stay tuned... Flip-flops top the Q2 Lyst Index It feels like we've been saying it for months, but shopping platform Lyst's quarterly report (released today) has confirmed that flip-flops are indeed summer's biggest must-have item. The Row's £670 Dune pair, which have been sported by everyone from Jonathan Bailey to Lori Harvey, came in at the number one slot to be crowned the quarter's "hottest product". To compile the results, Lyst analyses the online shopping behaviour of more than 160 million shoppers — and the appetite for toe-baring shoes doesn't stop there. 6 of this quarter's 10 hottest products are footwear, including Ancient Greek Sandals Iro jelly shoes and the Vibram FiveFinger V-Soul. Who would have thought feet would become so fashionable? Other top ranking products include Adidas' three-stripe sport shorts, Miu Miu's boat shoes and Isabel Marant's wedge trainers. See the full list of top brands and products here. Topshop's big comeback It seems the Topshop renaissance is almost upon us. Last week, the brand announced it would be making its return to the runway after almost a decade — but not as a part of London Fashion Week, as it once was. Both Topshop and Topman will present a 'See Now, Buy Now' show in August, which will be open to the public at a 'landmark London location'. Final details are to come, but in an even more nostalgic move, the brand are running an open casting call in collaboration with Wilhelmina Models — meaning you can apply to walk in the show. Britain's Next Top Model, anyone? As if we weren't already on the edge of our seats, today the former high-street favourite has teased an upcoming partnership with Cara Delevigne, naming her as the 'face of its bold new era'. A curated 30-piece edit will be available exclusively on from 16 August, and will feature sharp tailoring and statement outerwear, alongside reviving Millennial staples such as the Joni and Jamie jeans (IYKYK). Cara Delevingne said: "As a London girl, Topshop was the place where fashion felt fun, fearless, and full of possibilities. Coming back to Topshop now is more than a return – it's about starting something new. This collection is about owning your style, your story, and feeling empowered to express that every day." Cara has a long history with Topshop — she first made an appearance in a film for Kate Moss's 2010 collection, and later became the global face of the brand herself in 2014. She was a runway regular for Topshop Unique, opening and closing the London Fashion Week show in 2014 to coincide with her campaign (which also featured an appearance from Hailey Bieber, then Baldwin). In this full circle moment, the pair have big plans for the future. Another larger capsule collection is reportedly already in development for the 2026/27 season, and will be built around a shared vision of a sustainable, inclusive, and forward-thinking approach to fashion, with a focus on quality materials and design (which old Topshop was renowned for). 'Cara is the perfect embodiment of the Topshop spirit—bold, creative, and unapologetically herself,' said Michelle Wilson, Topshop Managing Director. 'This partnership is more than a campaign; it's a statement of intent as we reintroduce Topshop to the world. We're bringing together cultural relevance, design credibility, and a new energy that speaks to how people want to dress today.' Joey Swoll Faces Backlash For Hulk Hogan Tribute
This is fitness influencer Joey Swoll. He is the self-proclaimed "CEO of Gym Postivity," with millions of followers on TikTok, X, Instagram, and YouTube. He describes himself as "somebody who doesn't like bullies in the gym or on social media. That tries to teach people to treat others the way you want to be treated and hopefully makes the world a little better of a place." On July 25, Joey posted a now-deleted tribute to wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, 71, who died on July 24, 2025. Joey shared an old video of himself dressed as the wrestler, working out in the gym with the caption "RIP to a legend and one of my inspirations to start working out." Then, Joey received backlash for supporting Hogan, a wrestler whose WWE contract was terminated in 2015 over his use of racial slurs. In 2016, a Florida jury awarded Hogan $115 million against Gawker Media, which posted a sex tape of him. The case led to the discovery that he used racial slurs in 2007 to describe his daughter, Brooke Hogan's ex-boyfriend. According to the transcript, Hogan even said, "I am racist, to a point, f—ing n—s." Despite Hogan's contributions to wrestling entertainment, this controversy, among others, regarding his personal life and his relationship with the wrestling organization, tainted his legacy. And unfortunately for the fitness influencer, Joey learned the hard way about what it means to support Hulk Hogan in 2025. In response to the backlash he received for the tribute, Joey responded in a live stream, defending his support of Hogan. "I can post Hulk Hogan if I want to. Just because somebody makes a mistake in their life, doesn't mean that they haven't done good things," he said. "I don't know what he did. He said something 20 years ago and apologized for it. "If you're going to attack me, you better go after colored athletes, who are black and minority who posted him as well. Okay. The man was nice to me, and he made a mistake. I'm not God. People make mistakes in life. If you have a problem with that, look at yourself." When Joey used the term "colored athletes," it went viral, and everything really hit the fan. The influencer found himself in the middle of even more backlash, which led to a follow-up apology. On July 28, he shared an apology video on social media. "Instead of listening and understanding like I should have, I became defensive and said that I was posting to celebrate the wrestling icon, the person that so many of us looked up to as kids. I didn't know the extent of all the horrible things that he had done," Joey said. "Since last night, I've done a lot of research and learned all of the horrible things that man has done. Which is way more than just making a mistake and being human. I have taken the video down, and I apologize to anyone that I have offended." After apologizing for the Hulk Hogan video and his TikTok Live, he apologized using the wrong terms to address people of color. "I used the word colored instead of saying person of color, which is a very outdated and very offensive term," he added. "A few moments later, somebody educated me and told me that it wasn't okay to use that. I immediately apologized." As the backlash and criticism continued, Joey posted another series of explanations on social media that, in my opinion, only made the matter worse. On July 29, he shared an X post explaining he was "done" with back and forth. "All the good I've done, all the people I've helped, all for nothing. I truly hope all the people I've inspired do great things in their life and pay it forward to help others and carry on my message. But no matter how much good you do, people just wait for a reason to hate you and tear you down. You either die a hero, or live long enough to be the villain. Thank you for your support. I am done," he wrote. Following his apology, some fans were upset with Joey, claiming he didn't do anything wrong, and called him out for apologizing: In response to those criticisms, Joey posted a follow-up X post defending his decision to "take a break" from social media. "A lot of people upset with me calling me weak and a quitter or worse... So yea, maybe I am done with social media or need to take a break and get my head right. But I will say there so many incredible people being supportive and telling me how much I've helped them, to be stronger, and keep fighting. Thank you to everyone even those giving me a kick in the ass telling me to stop being weak and a quitter. You need to hear it once in awhile. I just need to breathe." There have been a lot of mixed reactions to Joey's apologies, which, in my opinion, highlight the worst parts of the internet echo chambers. One person wrote, "You were reactive and on top of your incredibly tone-deaf hulk hogan post, doubled down and referred to black people as 'colored' on a live stream. You are not a victim, and this is not accountability, which is ironic given you built your platform demanding it from others." "Respectfully, you used language like 'coloured', 'the blacks' & then excused racism as 'just a mistake 20 years.' I find it hard to believe that you had no idea that Hulk Hogan (who was your idol) had said racist things. Go learn from your mistakes, don't run away. Be better," another person wrote. But for every person who attempted to hold Joey accountable for his mistakes, three more doubled down on why he or Hulk Hogan did nothing wrong. "As soft as Charmin. This is some woe as me bullshit. You got called out like you call out all of the losers in your videos and now you're acting like a whiny little teenager. Sack up, Swoll. Ya need to do better," one fan wrote. Another fan wrote, "You trashed your idol, someone who was important to a huge portion of this country right after he died. Why? Some people will never forgive you complained. Don't act like we're the bad guys. You did this." After reading through all these explanations, apologies, and backlash, I want to know what you think about the situation. Sound off in the comments.

Beyond The Gates Recap: Kat Lies to Her Father About Tricking Eva originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Beyond The Gates recap: Orphey Gene's: June is freaking out about seeing Regina. Jacob tries to deescalate the situation, and both sisters get teary eyed. June sees the picture of her children on Regina's phone and wonders where she got it. She grabs Regina's phone and begins to break down. Regina says the picture is June's and they had the picture taken together. June says it never happened and she simply found the picture. Regina is stunned June doesn't recognize her own children. Naomi apologizes thinking June was told too much too soon. June insists her sister is lying to her as she has no children. Regina can't believe June abandoned her children and wonders where in the world they could possibly be. June asks for everyone to leave her alone and walks out. Regina thinks Naomi is wasting her time as she has tried for years with her sister. She was done when she left those babies all alone. Naomi wonders what happened in her life to put her in this position. Regina is finished and asks not to be called again. Andre's Pad: Ashley is thrilled by Andre bringing Paris to her. He says they are going to pretend they are in Paris for the evening. This evening, they will be dancing in a Parisian dance club. He kicks things off with champagne and pops the cork. They toast to Ashley saying yes to the desires of her heart. Ashley says she loves not knowing what comes next in her life. She loved Derek but he was offering her the opposite. Ashley doesn't want to discount what's right in front of her. The two enjoy dinner and then a dance. Joey's Gambling Pit: Joey thinks Vanessa looks amazing who is only there to talk business. Vanessa says he was outbid for a property which pisses him off. She thinks it's best to walk away from the deal as she is looking out for both of them. Joey reluctantly agrees and then asks to double the money being funneled through her business. Vanessa doesn't quite know what to say when Joey says they have each other's backs (Girl, he will throw you under the bus the first time he gets). Just then, a tipsy Doug arrives and says he is ready to gamble. He sees Vanessa with Joey and then takes a seat to play his hand. Vanessa is furious as Doug said he would stop gambling. Joey motions for the dealer to leave and he does quickly. Vanessa says they can't afford to go into debt again. Doug goes OFF saying every dollar he spends at the casino will get funneled through his wife's company because she and Joey are in bed together… figuratively, of course. Joey wants Doug to head out but he still wants to play a round of cards. That being said, Doug knows he's as likely to play cards tonight as he is to see under his wife's dress. With that, Joey throws him against the wall and tells him to get gone. (I'm so curious where folks stand with Doug. He was rude, but I'm not mad). Hotel – Ted's Room: Ted writes Eva a check and she promises to pay everything back. Ted has questions about something else and mentions Leslie's words about the accreditation issues being Kat's doing. Eva says she should have done her due diligence despite Kat's actions. She says she is trying to let go of Kat's actions to make peace. Eva asks her father to let it go. Ted says Kat has crossed a line for the last time. Leslie's Apartment: Leslie looks through designer fashion choices and says she has to buy everything she sees. Eva arrives and is pissed off about Leslie outing Kat. She wonders how her mother knew and Leslie says she just figured it out and there should be consequences to her actions. Eva just wants to make peace but her mother says they are just getting started. Eva needs to lock in and get ready for the battle and eventually get ready to move into the #1 daughter's seat. Eva plays with her mother who thinks Ted turned her down. She goes OFF before Eva pulls out the check. Eva wishes her mother would learn to trust her as she is good on her own. Leslie gets fresh and asks if she could ask for more next time as she has needs and dreams. Eva thought her mother needed money for the basic necessities. She says she does but also wants to invest in her future. Eva and Leslie get snarky with one another before parting ways. Fairmont Country Club: Kat rolls her eyes when she sees Tomas' call. He wants to hook up with some takeout from Orphey Gene's, but she says she's about to work out. He asks to meet up later and pushes until she agrees. Just then, she gets a text from her father. Orphey Gene's: Eva arrives to see Tomas (Ooooh, he double booked?). He says he didn't reveal anything she said to Kat. Eva realizes their last encounter was good (wait til you hear the details, Eva!) and says she is happy for Tomas. He apologizes for what almost went down between them and thanks her for putting on the brakes. He says he wasn't playing games and if he wasn't in love with her sister… Those words stop and stun Eva. After he hems and haws, she realizes he and Kat did the deed. With that, she tells him to go find Kat and wishes him a good night. Afterwards, she begins to break down. Hotel – Ted's Room: Kat arrives and says she can't stay long. Ted goes in about her vendetta against Eva. Kat counters saying Leslie and Eva are trying to ruin their lives. Ted asks about tricking Eva into missing the accreditation deadline. Kat is all kinds of evasive until her father calls her 'Katherine.' Kat says if Eva misunderstood it's on her. Ted simply asks her to steer clear of her sister (Did y'all hear her call Eva a nepo baby with a straight face?). She never admits anything and makes a quick exit. Previous Beyond The Gates Recap: Endings Joey asks his goon to put a tracker on Doug's car. Andre and Ashley get very close and she gets all kinds of uncomfortable. She turns around but before they kiss she says she needs to go and thanks him for the amazing evening. Tomas and Kat meet up at the country club. He is thrilled and she seems mortified. Tomas goes on about how beautiful she is and asks if she's ok about their time together. Kat refuses to communicate her true feelings and Tomas continues to not read the room. Eva sits and thinks back to her intense passion with Tomas. She says he and Kat belong together and Tomas can never be hers. Keep checking back for the latest Beyond The Gates recaps!
