Pro-Ject Audio Updates Its A1 Automatic Vinyl Turntable With New Features
Sales of vinyl have been rising for almost two decades now, ever since millennials discovered the joy of music held on physical media. On the back of this revival, many turntable manufacturers like Pro-Ject Audio have seen healthy growth in their business.
Pro-Ject Audio Systems has just unveiled the A1.2, its latest fully automatic turntable in the company's AUTOMAT range which makes the playing of vinyl more accessible. The new turntable retains the core design principles of the original A1 model, but the A1.2 refines the performance with a series of important upgrades.
The A1.2's new die-cast aluminum platter is at the heart of the turntable's improvements, replacing the stamped platter of the original A1. Pro-Ject has also introduced a CNC machining process that ensures precise and consistent production of the platter which reduces resonance.
The new A1.2 turntable has a new die-cast aluminum platter that replaces the previous model's ... More stamped version.
The new deck has an 8.3-inch ultra-light aluminum tonearm with a redesigned headshell made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. This construction enhances the arm's stability but keeps its weight to a minimum—a key factor in automatic turntable design. The maker has paired the tonearm with a pre-adjusted Pro-Ject Pick it MM E cartridge.
The engineering of the A1.2 extends to fully mechanical operation, eliminating motors or electrical components from the tonearm. By eliminating any potential source of interference, unwanted resonance is avoided. Once a record begins playing, the mechanics are disengaged completely, preserving the playback quality.
Like its predecessor, the A1.2 is handmade in the same German factory but with the final assembly taking place in Czechia. The result, says Pro-Ject, is a 'super-reliable, high-performance product at an accessible price.'
The chassis of the A1.2 is made from resonance-damped wood and has silicone-damped feet for isolation, while semi-symmetrical Connect it E phono cables continue Pro-Ject's reputation for making high-performance automatic turntable.
The new A1.2 turntable from Pro-Ject has its counterweight and anti-skating mechanism preset at the ... More factory.
Setting up the turntable is easy because the tracking force and anti-skating device are adjusted at the factory prior to shipping. The A1.2 also comes with a fitted cartridge that has been factory-aligned and is ready for playback straight out of the box.
All the user needs to do is unpack the turntable, place it on a level surface and remove the platter's protection and the tonearm's twist tie. The user just needs to clip on the dustcover hinges before sliding them into the turntable's hinge holders. Finally, the power supply is plugged into the socket on the turntable's rear before turning on the mains power.
The A1.2 includes an integrated phono preamp with an on or off switch which is set by lifting the turntable's mat and adjusting the switch manually. Once the turntable speed is chosen, the user just needs to lift the lever and press the Start/Stop switch. The platter begins spinning and the tonearm automatically moves to the correct position before gently lowering the stylus onto the record surface. Once the music is over, the tonearm automatically returns to its resting position.
The new Pro-Ject A1.2 turntable is available in black and white finishes and will start shipping in April and is priced at £469. The turntable should be available in the U.S. soon but no price has been published. The Pro-Ject A1.2 turntable is available in the U.K. and Ireland from Henley Audio. In the U.S., Pro-Ject Audio is available here.

Musk Suffers New Blow as Tesla Sales Drop for Second Quarter
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Elon Musk's Tesla reported another decline in deliveries in the second quarter, deepening the electric vehicle company's slump after a slower start to the year. Newsweek reached out to Tesla's press team via email for comment. Why It Matters Musk, once a vocal supporter and informal adviser to President Donald Trump, has stepped away from his government role leading the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and returned to focus on his companies, including Tesla. Musk and Trump's public split and fallout included character jabs as well as policy disagreements, including Trump's prized "big, beautiful" bill, which seeks to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent while cutting Medicaid funding and ending electric vehicle tax credits. Musk enjoys numerous lucrative contracts with the government across companies, including SpaceX, which Trump has threatened to revoke. The drop in sales and deliveries may signal an extended consumer backlash against the Tesla brand. Protests and vandalism targeting Tesla, which began in response to Musk's time in the Trump administration, have continued since his departure. What To Know On Wednesday, Tesla reported its second-quarter production and delivery figures, producing 410,244 vehicles, primarily Model 3 and Model Y cars, and delivering 384,122. Deliveries are considered a proxy for sales. The figures are about 14 percent lower than in the second quarter of 2024, when Tesla produced 410,831 vehicles and delivered 443,956. The second-quarter findings are also lower than those of the first quarter of 2025, which reported 362,615 vehicles produced and 336,681 deliveries, representing a decline of approximately 13 percent from the first quarter of 2024. The first-quarter slump coincided with Musk's formal affiliation with the president and his appointment to the DOGE position. AP Photo/Chuck Burton This quarter, production and deliveries increased from the first quarter but remained below the levels of a year earlier. The numbers represent a longer three-year decline in sales. In Europe, Tesla sales have dropped notably, with the company selling 8,729 vehicles in the European Union last month, a 40.5 percent decrease from the 14,682 sold in May 2024, according to data released on Wednesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Musk has also been pursuing a political agenda in Europe, with recent interventions in the German election and British politics. The electric vehicle market has become increasingly saturated since Tesla's inception, with numerous other manufacturers now producing hybrid electric cars, including BYD, BMW, Volkswagen, and others. In addition to its fleet, Tesla is also focusing on its robotaxi, self-driving service. What People Are Saying Tesla CEO Elon Musk, during a conference call in April, said he was "extremely optimistic about the future of the company," which will be "fundamentally based on large-scale autonomous cars and large-scale—being large volume—vast numbers of autonomous humanoid robots." Musk continued: "The value of a company that makes truly useful autonomous humanoid robots and autonomous useful vehicles at scale, at low cost—which is what Tesla is going to do—is staggering. I continue to believe that Tesla, with excellent execution, will be the most valuable company in the world by far." President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday: "We might have to put DOGE on Elon," adding that "DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon." What Happens Next Tesla remains one of the largest suppliers of electric vehicles in the world, but competitors have taken note of the disappointing numbers and are likely to move to secure a greater market share. On Tuesday, Trump noted that he will "have to take a look" into deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a naturalized United States citizen more than two decades ago.

Heidelberger Beteiligungsholding AG Begins Acquiring SQD Tokens and Prepares to Rename as SQD.AI Strategies AG
Heidelberger Beteiligungsholding AG has announced that it has commenced its strategic accumulation of SQD tokens. The German investment firm, whose shares are traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (ticker: IPOK), will soon be renamed Strategies AG, indicating its commitment to backing SQD's data network. The acquisition of SQD tokens initiated by Heidelberger Beteiligungsholding includes a combination of OTC deals and market purchases, signaling the start of a broader long-term investment strategy. For the fiscal year 2025, the company plans to raise up to €50 million to acquire, hold, and stake SQD tokens, reinforcing its intent to support and grow the SQD ecosystem. Chairman Clemens Jakopitsch, who made the original investment in SQD on behalf of the Piëch Family Office, commented: 'We see powerful crypto tailwinds on multiple fronts. The broader crypto market is gaining institutional momentum, especially with two landmark regulatory frameworks expected to pass the U.S. Senate in July. At the same time, the convergence of data and AI is emerging as the most critical technological shift of our time. SQD is uniquely positioned at the heart of both.' "This marks a pivotal moment for SQD,' said Marcel Fohrmann, Co-Founder of 'The commitment from Strategies AG reflects growing recognition that real-time, intelligent data infrastructure is now core to competitive advantage. As AI systems become more autonomous and tokenized economies scale, the demand for high-performance, onchain-native data is accelerating—and SQD is built to meet that demand." Crunchyroll's lazy AI subtitles have anime fans furious
At the start of last year, Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini told The Verge the company was "very focused on testing" generative AI tools for subtitling and captioning speech to text. The comment came just months after the streamer temporarily took down the debut episode of one of its newest shows, The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons, after people complained about poor subtitles. Much of the translation was nonsensical, with missing punctuation in many sentences. At the time, some fans speculated the company had used AI to translate the episode. Now there appears to be definitive proof Crunchyroll is using ChatGPT to translate new anime episodes, and the results are about as bad as you would expect. On July 1, Bluesky user Pixel spotted that the German subtitles for Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show , one of the new series Crunchyroll is streaming this anime season, read "ChatGPT said..." during a pivotal scene in the show's debut episode. Engadget was able to independently verify the episode contains the AI-generated translation. If you're curious, the English subtitles aren't much better, as seen in the screenshots above and below. Crunchyroll did not immediately respond to Engadget's comment request. People are understandably upset about the subtitles. Crunchyroll subscriptions start at $8 per month, and since its acquisition by Sony, the service is the dominant player outside of Japan. "This is not acceptable. How can we be expected to pay for a service that clearly doesn't care about the quality of its products?" wrote Pixel in their original post. As of the writing of this article, their post has been quoted more than 300 times and reposted by thousands of other people. Many fans say they're turning to torrented fansubs, calling the official AI-generated translations "unwatchable." Ironically, when Purini revealed Crunchyroll was testing generative AI tools for subtitles, he said part of the motivation was to prevent piracy. He reasoned the tech would allow the company to start streaming new, translated anime episodes as close to their original Japanese release as possible, adding the lag between official releases was sometimes what pushed fans to torrent shows.
