Tadej Pogacar wins the Liège race for the third time in an impressive solo finish

BELGIUM: Tadej Pogacar, a cyclist for UAE Team Emirates, impressively won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race for the third time.
The 26-year-old Slovenian athlete and world champion made a strong solo move 34 km from the finish. He finished a minute ahead of Italy's Giulio Ciccone and Ireland's Ben Healy. His main competitor, Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who won the past two years, was far behind and finished over three minutes later.
Pogacar has already built a legendary career, but his third win in the event, after triumphs in 2021 and 2024, strongly establishes his legacy in the sport. Furthermore, he became the second rider ever, after Eddy Merckx, to win both the Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege in the same year.
With this feat, the athlete said: ' It feels great to finish the first part of the season like this. I'm just happy that the whole season so far went perfect.' Highlights of the race
Pogacar moved on to the challenging Cote de la Redoute climb, pulling away from his competitors. He completed the 252-km race in six hours and nine seconds, securing his dominant win.
He admitted: 'It wasn't the plan (to attack on La Redoute), but it was such a hard pace before that I saw a number of teams didn't have a lot of teammates any more… I said 'OK, I'll test my legs a little bit and see if I can get a gap on the top', and then, I'll decide if I continue or not. Then, I just committed because I had good legs, also on the second climb after La Redoute.'
In a social media post, the athlete shared: 'Legs did the talking, but it took a village to get here… Liège–Bastogne–Liège—what a way to end the spring. Thank you, team, thank you everyone… Grateful for every moment, every person behind me.' View this post on Instagram

Netizens commented on the post and said: 'Once again, you performed an amazing race as the best team and rewarded them, Tadej, with an amazing victory.🏆👑🤍🌈 Thank you for a great racing experience🤍,' 'What a classic season thank you Tadej your a big champion,' 'What a performance, you did incredible ❤️‍🔥,' and 'You are POGIGOAT 🐐🐐🐐💪, the strongest cyclist of the XXIst century !!!! ❤️❤️🔥🔥.' Pogacar's athletic performance
The athlete now has nine monument wins, placing him in third place on the all-time list with Roger De Vlaeminck, behind Eddy Merckx with 19. At 26, he also became the first rider to finish on the podium in six consecutive monument races.
Suppose Pogacar finishes on the podium once again at the Giro di Lombardia this coming October . In that case, he will make history by being the first rider to podium in all five major classics in the same year.
Now, he will take a break for over a month before returning to compete at the Criterium du Dauphine in June, preparing for his next big goal: his fourth win at the Tour de France in July.

Fonseca clinches first grass-court win, Sun ousts defending champion Kasatkina in Eastbourne

FILE PHOTO: May 31, 2025; Paris, FR; Joao Fonseca of Brazil returns a shot during his match against Jack Draper of Great Britain on day seven at Roland Garros Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca claimed his first tour-level win on grass with a 6-7(8) 6-0 6-3 victory over Zizou Bergs to reach the second round at Eastbourne on Monday. The 18-year-old qualifier, who earned the biggest win of his career over then world number nine Andrey Rublev in the Australian Open first round earlier this year, will next face defending champion Taylor Fritz. Bergs edged a tense first set in the tiebreak, saving all three break points he faced, while Fonseca fended off both on his serve. Fonseca responded with a bagel in the second set to level the match. He raced to a 3-0 lead in the third. Although Bergs broke back for 3-2, Fonseca responded immediately, restoring his advantage to 4-2 as the Belgian continued to struggle. He sealed the win with a confident hold to love. "I am very happy to win my first match on grass, here in Eastbourne, in such a nice place and against a very good player," Fonseca said. "After a tough tiebreak, getting through mentally is very good. I am very happy for this one." New Zealand's Lulu Sun defeated top seed Daria Kasatkina 7-5 2-6 6-3. Sun raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before Kasatkina stormed back to lead 5-4, but the 24-year-old Kiwi regained control by reeling off the final three games to take it 7-5. Russian-born Australian Kasatkina responded by going up 4-2 in the second, breaking for 5-2 and serving it out to level. Sun broke for 2-0 and surged ahead to 3-0 in the decider, keeping Kasatkina on the back foot. The defending champion struggled to create chances as Sun dictated the rallies to secure the win. Ten-man Real Madrid show class in Pachuca Club World Cup win

CHARLOTTE - Real Madrid shrugged off an early red card to defeat Mexico's Pachuca 3-1 and take a big step towards the knockout stage of the Club World Cup on June 22. The result leaves Madrid, under new head coach Xabi Alonso, on top of Group H with four points while Pachuca are eliminated after two defeats. Saudi club Al Hilal, who held Real in their opener, face second-placed Salzburg later on Sunday. The Spanish giants were in trouble after just seven minutes when Raul Sencio was shown a straight red card after he pulled down Salomon Rondon with the Venezuelan clear on goal. That left the Liga MX team sensing the chance for an upset in front of 70,248 fans at the home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers. Pachuca quickly went close when Brazilian Kenedy saw a shot parried out by Thibaut Courtois and the Belgian keeper did brilliantly to deny Alan Bautista's follow up shot. But Real were able to get a grip on the game in midfield and slow the pace down, limiting opportunities for Pachuca. It was a superbly worked team goal that provided the breakthrough for Madrid in the 35th minute. Gonzalo Garcia's clever flick released Fran Garcia down the left and he looked inside to Jude Bellingham who took the ball in his stride and then buried a left-foot shot into the corner. Pachuca were not disheartened through and Courtois had to be alert again to push away a low drive from the dangerous Kenedy. But two minutes before the break Real doubled their advantage when Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled a low cross in from the right and Arda Guler collected Gonzalo's deft lay-off and fired home. Pachuca created a pile of chances after the break, peppering Courtois's goal, but the Belgian was up to the task denying Brazilian substitute John Kennedy and efforts from Rondon and Bryan Gonzalez. Javier Eduardo Lopez missed the best opportunity for the Mexican side, firing wide after some sloppy defending from Madrid. The outcome was put beyond doubt in the 70th minute when Federico Valverde slid the ball home after a smart exchange with Brahim Diaz. Pachuca finally got some reward for their determined effort when Elias Montiel's shot on the turn was deflected off Aurelien Tchouameni and flew past the wrongfooted Courtois. Liverpool shatter club transfer record to sign Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz

LONDON - Liverpool have signed Germany's Florian Wirtz from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, the Premier League champions said on June 20, as they smashed their transfer record to seal a deal for the attacking midfielder. Leverkusen will receive a guaranteed amount of £100 million (S$170 million) and a further maximum of £16 million in potential bonuses. That makes the 22-year-old Liverpool's most-expensive signing ever, ahead of Netherlands centre back and captain Virgil van Dijk who joined for £75 million in 2017. Wirtz, who signed a five-year contract, also becomes the fifth £100 million plus signing in Premier League history, joining Chelsea midfielders Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, Arsenal's Declan Rice and Manchester City winger Jack Grealish. 'I feel very happy and very proud. Finally, it's done, and I was waiting for a long time – finally it's done and I am really happy,' Wirtz said in a statement. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.' With two years left on his Leverkusen contract, Wirtz was also heavily linked with a move to German champions Bayern Munich and Pep Guardiola's City, who were looking to replace Kevin De Bruyne after the Belgian playmaker's exit. Wirtz was instrumental at Leverkusen, leading them to an undefeated domestic league and Cup double in the 2023-24 season while they went two league seasons without an away defeat. The German bagged 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen, having joined the club from Cologne in 2020. He scored 16 goals, with 15 assists, in 45 matches last season as Leverkusen finished second to Bayern. Capped 31 times by his country since his debut in 2021, Wirtz is the only player to register 10 or more goals and assists in the last two Bundesliga seasons. Midfield options While his arrival will add to Liverpool manager Arne Slot's midfield options, alongside Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones, Wirtz's versatility means he can also play on the left wing or as a false nine. His signing is a statement of intent from Liverpool as they look to build on their success under Slot, the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League and the sixth coach to win the title in their first season. 'I would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work,' Wirtz added. 'In the end, we want to be successful. Last season, they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.' He becomes Liverpool's second addition of the transfer window after they signed Dutch right back Jeremie Frimpong, also from Leverkusen. Bournemouth left back Milos Kerkez, 21, has also been linked with the Merseyside club. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
