British and Irish Lions show class in second half to see off battling Queensland Reds

The British and Irish Lions overcame their latest challenge in Australia with a big victory in Brisbane to continue their winning start to the 2025 tour but it was another mixed performance from Andy Farrell's latest selection.
There were some real moments of excellence from Maro Itoje's side, not least from the captain himself as the Lions ran in eight tries to two to see off a battling Queensland Reds side coached by former Ireland defence coach and future Wallabies boss Les Kiss.
It was a similar tally against the Western Force, and the Lions again kept their opponents scoreless for three quarters, having conceded twice inside 24 minutes, but their class won out, despite a string of handling errors.
Two tries from wing Tommy Freeman led the scoring for the Lions, who had conceded first through former All Black prop Jeff Toomaga-Allen and then conceded another following the Englishman's opener as Josh Flook touched down.
The Lions had led 21-12 at half-time as Andrew Porter and Duhan van der Merwe scored before the break.
The second half belonged to Farrell's men as Itoje set the tone on 46 minutes, followed by tries from man of the match Jac Morgan, Freeman again, Huw Jones and Garry Ringrose.
Finn Russell kicked four from four conversions with Fin Smith adding another couple from the tee as the Lions clicked more fluently after the interval.

GAME IN 60 SECONDS
Key Moment: Having been matched up physically by the Reds in the opening half, the Lions upped the intensity after half-time and Maro Itoje's try on 45 minutes signalled a deciding shift in momentum as the tourists flexed their muscles.
Talking Point: The Lions' ability to problem solve in game was encouraging but Andy Farrell will be frustrated by a misfiring scrum, continuing handling issues as they head to Sydney for game three on Saturday.
Yet there are clear signs of a potent attacking shape that give hope for Lions supporters that they can be a real force in the test series once the wrinkles can be ironed out.
Test-worthy Performances: Captain Maro Itoje rubbber-stamped his starting place with a commanding performance, while Jack Conan stole a march on his rivals for the No.8 jersey.
Jamison Gibson-Park's first outing alongside Finn Russell clicked instantly as a Test-ready Lions half-back partnership with the Northampton and England pairing of Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith also impressive as the back-up nine and 10.
Another Saint, Tommy Freeman's two-try haul intensified his battle on the right wing with Mack Hansen.
Ref Watch: New Zealander James Doleman officiated his second Lions game in a fortnight, having taken charge of the pre-tour Dublin game against Argentina and had the touring front row mystified at times with his decisions at scrum time, yet the Kiwi was authoritative and assured.
Penalties Conceded: Queensland Reds 12 Lions 9
Injuries: The Lions suffered a disruption to their plans ahead of kick-off when full-back Hugo Keenan was ruled out due to illness, replaced by Elliot Daly.
Yet it was Daly's removal on 67 minutes which will be of greater concern, the three-tour veteran's bang on the arm left the versatile and in-form back shaking his head as he trudged off the field.
Next Up: It's onto Sydney on Thursday ahead of Saturday's clash with the Waratahs as the first Test looms ever larger.
The Lions will be back in Brisbane on July 19 to face the Wallabies in the series opener and with Andy Farrell wanting to see further bedding in of his gameplan and a further development of potential Test combinations.
QUEENSLAND REDS: J Campbell – captain; L Anderson, J Flook (I Henry, 53), H Paisami, T Ryan; H McLaughlin-Phillips, K Thomas (L Werchon, 58); A Ross (G Blake, 57), M Faessler (J Nasser, 53), J Toomaga-Allen (S Fa'agase, 57); J Canham (R Smith, 53), L Salakaia-Loto (A Blyth, 53); S Uru, J Bryant, J Brial (C Vest, 63).

Waratahs huge underdogs as Farrell asks for more Lions progress

ENGLISHMAN JAMIE ADAMSON will play for the Waratahs against the Lions in tomorrow's match in Sydney and then head off to Canberra to wear a Lions jersey for the tourists' clash with the Brumbies on Wednesday. Adamson will be in the stands with his family supporting the Lions next week. The 25-year-old, who is on the bench for the Waratahs tomorrow [KO 11am Irish time, Sky Sports], was released by the Great Britain 7s back in 2023 and decided to go on an adventure to Australia to play club rugby. Adamson won the Shute Shield with Sydney's Easts but then moved back home to England in the hope of returning to the 7s fold. Just a couple of weeks later, Waratahs boss Dan McKellar asked him to join the Sydney franchise on a trial basis. It went well. Adamson has racked up 11 appearances in Super Rugby this year and now he gets a chance to take on the Lions, a team he has supported all his life and probably once hoped to play for. Many others in the Waratahs' matchday 23 have intriguing stories of their own, even the famous players. 29-year-old Taniela Tupou was seen as one of the best tightheads in rugby only a few years ago but his form fell away drastically. In May, he told the Sydney Morning Herald about the mental struggles he's been dealing with. Tupou is still in the Wallabies set-up, but he has been released to the Waratahs for tomorrow's game in a bid to show that he has what it takes to face the Lions in a couple of weeks. Waratahs flanker Charlie Gamble. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo At the other end of the scale in terms of experience, 21-year-old Waratahs loosehead prop Jack Barrett should get the chance to scrummage against Tadhg Furlong at Allianz Stadium tomorrow. Openside flanker Charlie Gamble is a New Zealand native who moved to Sydney in 2018. Initially, he was playing so-called 'Subbies' amateur rugby and working as a delivery driver for an alcohol supplier. Advertisement He swiftly rose through the grades in Sydney rugby to secure a contract with the Waratahs in 2020 and five years later, he gets the opportunity to plays against the Lions. 21-year-old out-half Jack Bowen has only started two games in Super Rugby and he's preferred to Wallabies-capped Tane Edmed as the number 10 for tomorrow's game. Every single one of these Waratahs will be proud and pumped up to play against the Lions but with seven of their key players remaining in Wallabies camp, there are fears that they will struggle to compete, especially if Andy Farrell's side can deliver something closer to an 80-minute performance. There are some good pros in the Waratahs 23. Lock Fergus Lee-Warner spent time in the Premiership, skipper Hugh Sinclair has a hard edge, blindside Rob Leota has 21 Wallabies caps, wing Andrew Kellaway has been released by Joe Schmidt along with Tupou, and clever centre Lalakai Foketi has reportedly signed for the Chiefs in New Zealand. It should help that Mike Catt is the Waratahs' attack coach and will have helped to prepare them well for facing an Andy Farrell team. But the reality is that there is a major gulf in quality between the two teamsheets for tomorrow. The Tahs are massive underdogs for this one. Lions head coach Farrell has rung the changes again after Wednesday's win over the Reds, but he saw more to like in that performance in Brisbane. Now he wants things to go up another level against the Waratahs. Mack Hansen at the Lions' captain's run in Sydney. Billy Stickland / INPHO Billy Stickland / INPHO / INPHO 'A bit more continuity, a bit more putting things together,' is what he hopes to see in Sydney. 'There's a bit of a stop-start nature with our outcomes… just lacking a bit of staying in the moment as much as we possibly can. 'But having said that, I think it's getting better. There's always things to fix in every single game but we've been pleased with some of our progression. 'Our breakdown work was great the other night, our transition work – whether it be defence to attack, attack to defence – was pretty good as well. 'So, yeah, we want to keep improving our defence because that's the main thing you'd want to stand for. I know defence has been pretty good, but there's still room for improvement.' The Brumbies game in Canberra was always going to be the Lions' toughest challenge against the Aussie Super Rugby sides because they've been consistently the best for years now. The hope is that the Waratahs' obvious emotion and delight at getting a shot at the Lions helps them to deliver a credible, competitive performance tomorrow. If not, we could be in for a rout that does nobody any good. The games are coming thick and fast now as we face a Waratahs side who will want to make their mark."Tadhg Beirne, Lions Captain on Owen Farrell's arrival: "He's only going to bring some serious quality to the squad, so we're looking forward to inviting him in here and getting to hang out with him," said Beirne."Any type of leadership is only going to enhance the squad. Playing with him four years ago, I've seen all the leadership qualities that he brings, the quality of his talent as well. It's going to do nothing but boost the squad, for sure."Dan McKellar, Waratahs Head Coach: 'Nela (Tupou) at scrum-time and Kells' (Kellaway) experience on both sides of the ball will be invaluable. To go out there in set-piece first and foremost, back that up with physicality and show the ability to repeat it, they are the three things I talk to tight forwards about every day.'I want him to be really good around scrums, lineout, maul and then impose himself on the game as we know he can do with ball in hand and without just have to put them under pressure. We are playing a high-quality Test team but they've got two arms and two legs, and you just have to put them under pressure.'The Force and the Reds have been able to do that and sustain it for long periods of time is the challenge. Bohemians and St Patrick's Athletic share spoils again as Dayle Rooney and Kian Leavy go closest in derby draw

BOHEMIANS were sporting their new Oasis shirt but their old Dublin Bus kit would have been more appropriate. Because having waited ages for one draw, two came along at once. A case of win or bussed? Advertisement 2 St Pat's and Bohs played out a goalless draw in Dublin on Friday night 2 Both sides went close but could a winner wasn't found in the Dublin derby Bohs did not share the spoils once in their first 21 games of the season, coming out on top 12 times and being defeated in the other nine. But, just as winning and losing can become habits, so, too, it seems, can drawing. A week ago, an injury-time equaliser from Jamie Clarke saw them take a point against Sligo Rovers. There were no goals here which was remarkable given St Pat's hit the woodwork, had a goal for Simon Power scrubbed for offside when he was on and had an effort cleared off the line. Advertisement read more on football But they could also have lost it because, after all that, Dayle Rooney shaved the outside of the upright and both James Clarke and Colm Whelan went close at the death. It is now six games without a win for St Pat's, hardly ideal ahead of their Conference League clash against Hegelmann Litauen here on Thursday but, then again, Europe sparked an upturn in domestic form last year. The last time these sides met, at Dalymount Park 10 weeks ago, St Pat's were leading in the final minute and contrived to lose 2-1. The man who scored the stoppage-time winner that night, Sean Grehan, has since left but Bohs handed a debut here to an arrival earlier this week, Douglas James-Taylor. Advertisement Most read in Football The Englishman arrived on a free transfer from Walsall after a successful year-long loan with the Saddlers' sister club Drogheda United. And, although he did not see much of the ball in the first half, he did have one opportunity to instantly endear himself to the Gypsies' faithful. From Liam Smith's throw-in, James Clarke outmuscled Barry Baggley, allowing him to lay the ball off to the striker but his first-time effort was just over the bar. That came at a time when St Pat's had the upper hand, although it was the visitors who had started the brighter of the two teams in the opening exchanges. Advertisement Ross Tierney was picked out after getting beyond the St Pat's defence from a free-kick but - when he drilled the ball across the face of goal - it was knocked behind for a corner. St Pat's weathered that early storm and began to get a grip on the game and, for a moment, it looked as though Aidan Keena had gotten away from Rob Cornwall to set himself up for a one-v-one with Kacper Chorazka. But the centre-half did enough to put his opponent off with the ball spinning loose to Niall Morahan to clear as the striker appealed more in hope than expectation for a penalty. Later, Keena picked out Kian Leavy with a clever clipped pass but he was quickly crowded out in the box. Advertisement Jake Mulraney had one effort comfortably saved by Chorazka but Bohs needed the woodwork to save them in stoppage time following a move involving Mulraney. As some St Pat's fans berated him for not trying to get past his man he instead pulled the ball back to Ryan McLaughlin. The full-back's deep cross was only partially cleared by Smith with the ball falling to Jason McClelland with a shot which rattled the crossbar. Soon after the restart, Power fired home but after the whistle had sounded when he had been incorrectly flagged for offside. Advertisement Then, Leavy skipped his way through the Bohs defence and fired towards the far corner before Flores made a timely intervention. At the other end, the underworked Joseph Anang was happy to see Rooney's curler glance the outside rather than the inside of the post. And he was even more relieved when a free out was awarded when Clarke nicked the ball from his grasp, although Axel Sjoberg had reacted well to clear up before Whelan was just off target with a header from Tierney's cross.
