Toyota MR2 may be delayed due to 'braking, steering, and driving' difficulties

7NEWS29-07-2025
The return of the Toyota MR2 may be delayed as the company is having troubles sorting out the driving dynamics of its mid-engine Yaris race car.
Toyota unveiled the GR Yaris M Concept (top and below)at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon in January, which featured the company's new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mounted behind the rear seats and driving the rear wheels.
At the concept's unveiling, the company said the concept would be developed and honed by racing it in the Super Taikyu endurance series. It was hinted the race-bred mid-engine platform might then be used in a production car, widely believed to be the long-awaited successor to the MR2.

Over the weekend, Toyota announced it wouldn't enter the Yaris M in the fifth race of the Super Taikyu series at Autopolis due to 'difficulties unique to midship-mounted vehicles in terms of braking, steering, and driving'.
The car maker said it was still committed to entering the car in future races, but didn't commit to when this might happen.
The new 2.0-litre turbo powering the Yaris M is reportedly set to do duty in the upcoming front-wheel drive Celica, as well as the mid-engine MR2.
According to Japanese magazine Best Car the engine will make 221kW/400Nm in base spec, and around 294kW/550Nm in performance guise. A racing version of the engine could output as much as 441kW.
It's unclear if the delay will impact just the MR2, or the Celica as well.
Production of the Celica ended in 2006 as affordable sporty coupes fell out of favour across the world. Although it's now remembered a front-wheel drive model, it wasn't until the fourth generation launched in 1985 it made the switch to the layout.
The axe fell on the MR2 in 2007, with the third generation roadster never gaining the sales or the cult status bestowed on the boxy original or the Ferrari-lite successor.

Jaguar Land Rover appoints Tata executive as new CEO

Come November 1 PB Balaji will become the first executive from parent company Tata Motors to lead Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The automakers confirmed Mr Balaji will replace Adrian Mardell, who announced late last week he would retire by the end of the year. Mr Balaji has been chief financial officer at Tata Motors, and a JLR board member since 2017. Prior to that he held various senior financial executive roles around the world with food, drink, personal care and household products giant Hindustan Unilever before becoming its CFO in 2014. Although his listed career history is all within the financial sphere, he has a bachelor of mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and a graduate diploma in management and finance from Indian Institute of Management. Supplied Credit: CarExpert In a statement Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Jaguar Land Rover, as well as the Tata Group, said the board had been doing a candidate search over the last few months and decided on Mr Balaji with Tata Motors for the 'past many years and is familiar with the Company, its strategy and has been working with the JLR leadership team'. This, he claims, will 'will ensure that we continue to accelerate our journey to Reimagine JLR'. Jaguar Land Rover was established in 2008 when Tata Motors bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford for US$2.2 billion. Along with Aston Martin, Lincoln and Volvo the British marques were part of the Premier Automotive Group established by Ford's Australian CEO Jacques Nasser in 1999. With losses piling up at many of the brands, then CEO Alan Mullaly began selling off Ford's collection of luxury brands. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Supplied Credit: CarExpert While Jaguar and Land Rover never consistently made money under Ford's ownership, the JLR has been profitable for 10 of its 16 as part of Tata Motors. Although it has swung back into the black under the leadership of departing CEO Adrian Mardell, the luxury automaker faces storm clouds on the horizon. Tariffs, which have seemingly been rising and falling on a daily basis in the US, caused the manufacturer to pause shipments to one of its more important export markets. While many countries are now slapped with a 25 per cent or higher tariff, there's now an agreement with the UK, which sees the first 100,000 cars per year from Britain taxed at just 10 per cent. A deal with the EU for a 10 per cent tariff is nearly complete, which will come as a relief to JLR as the Defender is produced in Slovakia. On top of this, Jaguar's new brand identity and design direction, as previewed by the Type 00 concept, has garnered plenty of attention and caused much gnashing of teeth on the internet. With three production cars set to launch from 2026, it remains to be seen whether the marque's relaunch will be successful, both critically and financially. MORE: Everything Land Rover

Mercedes-Benz GLC EV: New mid-size SUV gets modern twist on brand's classic face

Mercedes-Benz is having another crack at the mid-size luxury electric SUV segment, with the GLC with EQ Technology teased ahead of its reveal next month. The battery-electric version of the German premium brand's best-seller will debut at the Munich motor show (aka IAA Mobility) on September 7, 2025. Mercedes-Benz has released a teaser image showing off its distinctive grille, and there are echoes of the grilles of classic models like the W126 S-Class – but with a catch. While the chrome-surrounded grille has three rows with dozens of small square segments, reminiscent of Benzes of yore, it's closed-off and features integrated contour lighting and a 'smoked-glass-effect lattice structure'. The central star and the integrated surrounding contour of the panel are also illuminated. The nod to the past is part of Mercedes-Benz's move away from the controversial design language employed on its Electric Vehicle Architecture-based EQE sedan, EQE SUV, EQS limousine and EQS SUV. Mercedes-Benz has already facelifted the EQS in Europe, giving it a more conventional grille, and has paused deliveries of the quartet in the crucial US market due to slow sales. The company has said it's moving to a 'coherent design language' across its portfolio, with its EVs to more closely resemble their combustion-powered counterparts even if they use different platforms – a strategy rival BMW already employs. As seen in spy photos and teasers, it appears to have a more rakish silhouette than the combustion-powered GLC, but is much more athletic-looking than the blobby EQE SUV. Mercedes-Benz is also ditching its EQ nameplates, which is why this new mid-size electric SUV is called the GLC with EQ Technology instead of the EQC. Inside, the electric GLC will feature an 'all-new, seamless' MBUX Hyperscreen that will see the vehicle's screens under one layer of glass. It's also the first model in a 'completely new family of vehicles' featuring a 'superbrain' that will power every new Mercedes-Benz. The electric GLC will debut the brand's new dedicated electric vehicle (EV) architecture, and rides a wheelbase 129mm longer than the combustion-powered GLC – so just over three metres. It'll be offered in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations with system outputs of up to 500kW. Batteries range from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit that's likely to deliver a WLTP-rated range of just over 500km, to a 94.5kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery that boosts WLTP range to more than 800km. This battery's highly efficient silicon carbide anodes and the 800V electrical architecture also allow charge rates of up to 320kW, which mean it can be topped up to give 400km more range in as little as 15 minutes. A prototype we drove in Sweden earlier this year was reasonably close to what is likely to be the top-spec, non-AMG GLC 4Matic with EQ Technology. Its dual-motor powertrain had a system output of 360kW, a two-speed transmission, the 94.5kWh battery, air suspension, and rear-wheel steering.
