MOE's cooperation crucial for safe internet campaign in schools

By: Bernama Text Size: KENINGAU: The Communications Ministry hopes the Ministry of Education (MOE) will continue to support the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) so that the programme can be carried out in schools as part of efforts to improve digital literacy among students. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said this was important as KIS educates both primary and secondary school students about internet safety, given its increasing usage today.
Advertisement She said the campaign's content is tailored to suit the students' age levels — Level One for Years One to Three and Level Two for Years Four to Six, as well as secondary schools. 'We are requesting cooperation from the MOE to allow us into schools so we can involve schools in educating students on how to stay safe online. 'For primary schools, KIS will carry out interactive activities to help them understand. They may not need too much exposure to issues like online gambling and scams, but cyberbullying is one of the key issues they might face,' she told reporters after attending the KIS programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Puteh, here, Monday. Teo said the KIS programme, launched on Jan 21, focuses on four areas — cyberbullying, online scams and gambling, child sexual exploitation and data protection and digital literacy — and aims to reach over 10,000 educational institutions by the end of this year. She said school students are also provided with information on child sexual exploitation, which is seen as one of the issues they may encounter. A total of 344 schools nationwide are targeted to be involved in the KIS rollout from May to August this year, including 64 schools in Sabah. 'As of July 1, the programme has been implemented in 221 schools, involving 31,246 participants, comprising students, teachers and parents,' she said, adding that aside from schools, the campaign also receives support from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in developing engaging co-curricular activities. Earlier, in a Facebook post, Teo shared that she attended the Mukim Luagan Community Outreach Programme organised by Pertubuhan Pelangi Harapan Sabah, in collaboration with various agencies, including the Keningau District Health Office, Social Security Organisation, National Anti-Drugs Agency and Keningau District Information Office. 'Health awareness is extremely important, especially with Malaysia expected to become an ageing nation by 2030. Grassroots outreach initiatives like this are among the best ways to ensure no one is left behind,' she said. Pertubuhan Pelangi Harapan Chairman Grelydia Gillod said the initiative aims to help the Government disseminate information to local communities about what the Madani government is doing for the people. KUALA LUMPUR: The announcement of several key initiatives by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday, as a gesture of appreciation to the people, reflects a policy shift by the Madani government towards a more inclusive approach for the middle-income group (M40). "The attention given to the B40 was necessary due to pressing needs, but the reality is that the M40 group is also grappling with the post-pandemic economic burden, particularly the rising cost of living, inflation and loan commitments,' he told Bernama. Mujibu said while the RM100 cash aid and lower RON95 fuel price might not have completely changed the M40 group's perception, it was a clear indication that the government was not turning a blind eye to their plight. "In a climate where inflation, the prices of goods and the lack of affordable housing remain key concerns, any form of assistance, even if it is a one-off, can help boost confidence in the government's fiscal policies. "The M40 requires more than just cash aid; tax relief, education subsidies for their children, affordable housing and efficient public transport are also crucial,' he said, suggesting that aid be based on actual needs rather than gross income alone. Associate Professor Dr Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) opined that the Prime Minister's announcement signalled the government's move to give more attention to the middle-income earners who were often seen as self-reliant but were equally affected by the rising cost of living. "The M40 may not qualify for the same assistance as the B40, but they still have to deal with many expenses just to survive,' he said. Mazlan said the comprehensive initiative announced reflected the government's concern in addressing the grievances of the M40 group and could help change their negative perception of government policies. In addition, he said the initiative could stimulate the domestic economy by boosting household spending, thereby supporting local sectors, including tourism. Meanwhile, 38-year-old trader Mohd Syafiq Hazman said the move provided some relief for middle-income families, who he felt were often not given due attention by the government. "It may not be much, but RM100 can go a long way for a family of four or five in easing kitchen or fuel expenses. It shows the government is aware of our struggles,' he said.- Bernama

Concession Companies Need To Understand Toll Hike Delay To Lighten People's Burden
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The decision to delay the increase in toll rates on several highways needs to be understood by concession companies in the context of the MADANI government's noble efforts to lighten the burden of the people, especially highway users among the B40. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that although the move would affect the cash flow of highway concession companies, he believed that the government's real objective would be understood by all parties involved. 'In terms of the business model, they do not like it (delay in increase) … from the beginning when making the business proposal, cash flow has been taken into account. 'We understand, and this is undoubtedly disrupting their cash flow but I hope they understand why the government made this decision to ease the burden of road users, especially the B40 group,' he said here today. Nanta said this at a press conference after the handover of the Letter of Acceptance (SST) for the Blackspot and Federal Road Maintenance Programme in Peninsular Malaysia at the Works Ministry. The event was also attended by Works Ministry deputy secretary-general (Policy and Development) Datuk Mohd Sakeri Abdul Kadir. He also expressed his appreciation to the concession companies who cooperated and understood the government's decision to help the people in the current economic situation. He said the government also acknowledged that the concession companies had responsibilities based on the agreements signed, and any breach of the agreement had to be seen from the perspective of their interests. 'When there is a breach of this agreement, we have to understand it from their perspective because they borrowed their investment money and so on, and it needs to be repaid. 'They have a business model, return on investment (ROI), so we have to understand that is their big responsibility. So whatever is good for everyone, then all parties should work together," he explained.

Fees (Pengkalan Kubor Ferry) (Validation) Bill 2025 Tabled For First Reading
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Fees (Pengkalan Kubor Ferry) (Validation) Bill 2025, which aims to validate the collection of ferry service fees between Pengkalan Kubor, Malaysia, and Takbai, Thailand, was tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today. Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, when tabling the bill, said that the second and third readings will also be conducted during this session. The bill seeks to validate the fees which were charged and collected by the Public Works Department and paid into the Consolidated Fund in respect of ferry services between Pengkalan Kubor, Malaysia, and Takbai, Thailand, from jan 1, 1999, to Dec 31, 2024.
