Perry's James Beard-Winning Japanese Chef Credits Mom For Cooking Skills

Eater3 days ago

Plenty of tears were shed late last month as Perry's executive chef Masako Morishita and her mother, Ryoko Morishita, served Japanese comfort foods reminiscent of Masako's childhood and her family's nearly 100-year-old restaurant in Kobe, Japan, that she has been introducing to D.C. palates for almost six years.
When Masako was asked by Resy to put together her own 'Dream Team Dinner' for the national American Express and Resy dinner series, she could only think of one chef she'd admired for decades. Her mother has been leading the kitchen in their family-owned tachinomi (a small standing bar and restaurant) for almost 50 years and has always been her go-to person for questions about a new dish or advice for switching up a menu. But Ryoko, like Masako, is not a classically trained chef. She was a sake brewery sales representative when she met Masako's father and it was daunting task to cook in a restaurant kitchen when they took on the family business. That led to her taking more risks, incorporating non-Japanese ingredients into her cooking and inspiring her adventurous daughter.
Masako easily plays with traditional Japanese dishes, like okonomiyaki with black garlic aioli and prosciutto at her first gig at Maxwell Park and Perry's famous shrimp katsu burger that ties together togarashi tartar, lemon cabbage slaw, and cheddar on a deep-fried shrimp patty.
For their first-ever crossover dinner on May 29, weeks after Mother's Day, Ryoko flew in from Japan to prepare favorite family dishes with her daughter in Adams Morgan. Gyu suji nikomi, beef tendon stew, starts the meal with a small bowl of extremely tender wagyu tendon with deep sake and soy flavors cooked down for three days. This stew is always Masako's first dinner request when she visits her family in Japan. House-made dashi broth, one of Masako's favorite comforting ingredients to make from scratch, was featured in the tofu skin-wrapped first course and a childhood of enjoying shabu shabu inspired the second course of thinly sliced wagyu ribeye in a sweet soy sauce broth.
The multi-course dinner culminated in an unconventional dessert. Midori, a Japanese sweet melon liqueur, and soda were poured over vanilla gelato, making a float reminiscent of the melon soda Masako used to have as a special treat growing up.
'I used to have really severe asthma growing up. So since I was two years old, so my mom had to take me to the doctor every single week so I could get a shot,' Masako explains. 'But of course, I hate it. I was kid. I didn't like it at all, but there was a cafe nearby the doctor's office, so she always took me there and then let me pick whatever I wanted to eat or drink to make me feel better… that's that drink I used to order all the time.'
That thoughtful treat at the end of their collaborative meal sums up decades of ups-and-downs in Masako and Ryoko's relationship. As an admittedly headstrong teen, Masako constantly clashed with her parents and even forged their signatures for a foreign exchange program that sent her to a small town in Wisconsin at 16 years old. 'I was a little crazy,' Masako concedes. But even when they disagreed, Ryoko was always cooking for Masako, serving up dishes with warmth and comforting flavors that 'melted the ice' of their disagreements.
She constantly forged her own path, becoming a cheerleader for the Washington Commanders and then a chef as her parents urged her to stick to a reliable desk job. But her passion and drive won over the James Beard Foundation in 2024, when she won the Emerging Chef award at the Oscars of the food world.
'Even though I was working almost three years full-time in this career, they kept telling me, 'Oh, don't you want to go back to your office job?'' Masako remembers. 'But the award really made them think, 'Okay, I think she's doing okay.''
Today, food still connects the mother and daughter, with Ryoko even coming to her for advice on dishes and cheering Masako on from afar. This is the first time they've collaborated in a restaurant kitchen together, but Masako hopes it won't be the last.
'If we have a chance to do it again, of course I would,' she says. 'Because I'm really confident we can create something different and delicious'

Dandyism, decadence and a taste of rebellion at Junya Watanabe's vision of Paris

PARIS (AP) — A new kind of dandy took over Junya Watanabe's runway on Friday — not the traditional gentleman, but a sharp-dressed rebel with a streak of punk at Paris Fashion Week. Watanabe, the pioneering Japanese designer known for mixing classic tailoring with a wild, creative edge, unveiled a lineup of bold, offbeat looks at the Lycée Carnot. The show was sharp but rebellious, rich in history but full of energy. It wasn't about looking back. It was an explosion of new ideas. Watanabe has built his reputation by smashing the line between elegance and rebellion. This season, he didn't just mix old and new, he turned history into a weapon. His spring men's collection borrowed from the past — rich brocades, jacquards and a hint of Rococo flair — but reimagined them with a bold, punk attitude. Jackets worthy of Venetian nobility were paired with rugged workwear and raw denim, creating looks that felt both grand and streetwise. The music followed the same energy, starting with a traditional piano piece breaking down into a thumping city beat. Classic style was pulled apart and rebuilt right on the runway. Some outfits showed off sharp, careful tailoring, but the order quickly fell away — seams went crooked, sashes trailed loose, wild patterns took over. Even the ties broke free, knotted multiple times in ways that broke from tradition. Despite the wild mix of styles, the show was more than just patchwork. Watanabe was making a statement about taste itself — a constant tug-of-war between old ideas and breaking the rules. Familiar touches — a monk's robe, the rooftops of Florence — were turned into clever fashion puzzles. Throughout the collection, Watanabe's eye for detail and contradiction remained. He's known for boldly mixing sharp tailoring with street style, blending Japanese tradition with punk energy. This season, he sharpened that approach into clothes that were both smart and full of electricity, pieces that challenged the idea of what it means to dress well. By the end, the dandy wasn't just a gentleman —he was sharper, braver, both thinker and rebel.

Justin And Hailey Bieber Marriage Update June 2025

It sounds like things aren't going so good between Justin and Hailey Bieber. As you know, there's been talk about the pair's relationship for months – years even — but things recently intensified following a series of cryptic posts from Justin, including one venting about relationships and another about getting the silent treatment. The posts notably came after he faced huge backlash for his public treatment of Hailey, including his underwhelming response to her summer Vogue cover, his short reaction when her makeup brand, Rhode, made a billion-dollar beauty deal with e.l.f. Cosmetics, and his "vile" Mother's Day post, which partly said, "mothers day sucks ass." While neither Justin nor Hailey has addressed the latest round of speculation, a source tells Entertainment Tonight that "things have been rocky" between the couple. "Justin has been super moody," the source said, "and they've had a lot of unpleasant conversations and arguments." That apparently includes "fights about simple things like what they're having for dinner," which has reportedly made Hailey feel "drained." "Hailey has been frustrated by Justin's antics on Instagram ... and feels unsupported by him," the source shared. Another thing that she's reportedly found "upsetting" about Justin, who's been on hiatus since his 2021 album, Justice, is his "lack of motivation." But she's not the only one with alleged issues in the marriage. Justin reportedly has his qualms, too. The source said, "Justin has been getting irritated easily and feels like Hailey can be superficial about the way their relationship looks in the public eye." Reps for Hailey and Justin didn't immediately return BuzzFeed's request for comment, but Hailey previously shared that the majority of the news about her is "not real." "And that's the thing," she told Vogue. "I have a real life. My real life is that I get to wake up to my beautiful family and my son and my friends and I have people that know me and love me and I love them." Meanwhile, Justin told the outlet that "the smartest thing I've ever done was marry Hailey." "I'm walking in the days I always dreamed of," he said of becoming a husband and father to their 10-month-old son, Jack. I hope everything is OK with the two of them! We'll see if either of them comments on the report.
