Amazon buys wearable AI startup Bee, a wrist device that hears and transcribes every word you speak

As Amazon spends this year attempting to bolster its AI bonafides, the internet retail giant is reportedly acquiring Bee, a startup that makes an AI wearable for your wrist. The announcement was made by Bee CEO Maria de Lourdes Zollo on LinkedIn who wrote she "couldn't think of better partners to help us bring truly personal, agentic AI to even more customers." Amazon confirmed the acquisition in an email to Tom's Guide, though noted that the deal "isn't closed yet" and the two entities are still two companies. What is Bee? (Image credit: Bee) Bee is a recent startup that makes a $49.99 Fitbit-esque wrist device, dubbed the Bio Pioneer edition that is still in preorder and slated to launch in September. The device is meant to listen to your conversations through your day and then use AI to transcribe everything said by and around you. From there the AI agent will generate personalized summaries of your day plus reminders and suggestions in the Bee app. You can also let the Bee access your calendar, contacts, emails, location, photos and reminders to help the AI's insights and send information. With Amazon, we were told that Bee is working on a number of new features to "provide even greater control over" their devices. Sign up to get the BEST of Tom's Guide direct to your inbox. Contact me with news and offers from other Future brands Receive email from us on behalf of our trusted partners or sponsors "We're excited to partner with the Bee team to continue inventing in this space," Amazon spokesperson Alexandra Miller said in an email. Is it any good? (Image credit: Bee) Some have tried out the device, The Verge's Victoria Song went hands on with the Bee and described it as a "glimmer of a good idea." She was skeptical that we need to record our conversations all the time and found that it confused real-life conversations with media playing in the background. Plus, there are privacy concerns around Bee, though Lourdes has said previously that Bee doesn't store any recordings. Before pre-sales opened the company emphasized that they wanted to profit via device sales and subscriptions. However, compared to the Humane AI Pin, Rabbit R1 and Friend pendant, Song did say the Bee is the "most successful AI wearable" she's tried with the cavaet that it's a very low bar. We reached out to Bee for comment on how it plans to partner with Amazon and its goals with the new partnership. They have not responded as of publication but we will update if they do. Target to end price match policy — and customers are seeing red. ‘Not a good move'

Target is planning to ditch its competitor price match policy, a decision that has some customers seeing red. Starting July 28, the retail giant said it will only offer price matching between Target stores and a company spokesperson confirmed to McClatchy News. For more than a decade, Target's 'price match guarantee' allowed customers to match the price of identical items sold at a lower price by Walmart and Amazon, in addition to its own stores, according to its website. For example, customers could match prices on in-store purchases, and vice versa. Prices can be matched at the time of purchase or within 14 days, Target said. 'We've found our guests overwhelmingly price match Target and not other retailers, which reflects the great value and trust in pricing that consumers see across our assortment and deals,' a Target spokesperson told McClatchy News in a statement July 21. The Minneapolis-based retailer launched its price match policy in 2013 in a move then-CEO Gregg Steinhafel said would offer shoppers an 'unbeatable value,' CBS News reported. The new policy will allow customers to 'continue to shop with confidence,' the Target spokesperson said. A notice shared in stores also cited 'guest feedback' for the changes, which have drawn the ire of some shoppers. 'I used to shop at Target a lot,' one person wrote on Reddit. 'Not anymore. This is ridiculous, and not a good move.' 'What, do guests not like saving money?' wrote another. 'I'd price match Amazon or Walmart at times and then use my discount (yes this follows policy),' another shopper posted on Reddit, adding: 'Well, I'll just buy less or buy it where it's cheaper.' The changes comes as Target struggles with lagging sales, due in part to ongoing fallout over the company's decision to roll back its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, as reported by KCRA and CNN. The company also pointed to backlash over LGBTQ-themed items offered at stores during Pride Month in 2023. First-quarter sales this year dipped nearly 4 percent as the retailer 'navigated a highly challenging environment,' Target CEO Brian Cornell said in an earnings report published in May. '...We're not satisfied with current performance and know we have opportunities to deliver faster progress on our roadmap for growth,' Cornell said. Target was the last to continue offering a price match guarantee on items from competitors, according to NewsNation. Walmart doesn't offer price matching for rival retailers — only online and in-store purchases, its website says. Amazon currently does not offer price matching.

Target's latest change to its shopping policy is sure to be unpopular

BY From boycotts to tariffs, it's fair to say Target has had a rough year so far, and now customers may not be happy with this change to a favorite shopping perk. Starting on July 28, the mega-retailer is altering its price match policy, which for nearly a decade, gave customers a refund if they bought an item at Target and found the identical item for less at either ' Amazon, Walmart, or with Target Circle' within two weeks of the purchase. Customers who request and receive the price match get the difference between what they paid and what the item cost elsewhere. Going forward, the new policy will only apply to the same item bought from another Target store or the Target website, not from a competitor retailer. How can I request a price match from Target? To make use of the current price match policy before it ends, or to request a price match with items from other Target stores or the website for in-store purchases, customers must provide proof of the lower price to Guest Services at their local Target store. For or Target app purchases, call Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869. Target by the numbers As Fast Company reported, after explosive sales growth in 2021 and 2022, the mega-retailer has been flatlining. In 2023, net sales dropped $1.7 billion, or 1.6%, and declined again in 2024, though comparative year-to-year sales were up about 1% (2023 was a 53-week year). In May, Target reported first quarter earnings, including net sales of $23.8 billion compared with $24.5 billion in 2024. The company cut its annual sales projections and said it expects a low-single-digit decline for 2025, after projecting a 1% increase for sales in March. Target has a current market capitalization of $48.34 billion. The super-early-rate deadline for Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Awards is this Friday, July 25, at 11:59 p.m. PT.
