Wrongful arrest at King Shaka International Airport: State to fork out R580k in damages

The treatment meted out to a woman arrested at King Shaka International Airport on vague suggestions that she may be involved in fraud, and her subsequent 10 nightmare days in custody amounted to horrific suffering.
This is according to the Supreme Court of Appeal in awarding her R580,000 in damages. Cynthia Khedama earlier won her case in the KwaZulu Natal High Court against the police. She was initially awarded R580,000 in damages, but on appeal before a full bench of the court the amount was reduced to R350,000.
Khedama appealed before the SCA against the reduced amount. She initially claimed R1 million in damages from the police. The SCA, in upholding the appeal, commented that in considering the treatment and conditions which prevailed in almost all places where she was detained, she rightfully must have thought that it would be better for her to rather die.
'The cruelty displayed by the police towards her leaves one with no room to imagine that the police thought that they were still dealing with a fellow human being. The treatment meted out to her was so harsh that one would perhaps be justified to think this was an effort to enable the appellant to be so frustrated as to rather take her life…It was even forgotten that she belonged to the human race,' the court remarked.
Khedama was arrested in December 2011 while she was on route to Turkey for a business visit, alongside her employer. Two police officers approached her, and she was led to a room at the airport where she was questioned.

She was asked where she was going to and whether she had any fraud matters pending. She was accused of being associated with a 'kwerekwere' - a derogatory term for a foreign national - as her boyfriend was from Cameroon.
The officials demanded her suitcase to check whether she was carrying drugs. Although no incriminating items could be found on her, she was arrested. Khedama's explanation to the police that her ID document had been stolen and that she did report to the SAPS that the perpetrators were using her document, fell on deaf ears.
This was the start of her nightmare ordeal, as her hands were cuffed behind her back and she was taken to the police station. She was placed in a small cell, which was dirty with faeces and smelled terribly. She had no blanket with which to cover herself. She described how breakfast, bread and tea were thrown through a hole in the door.
Khedama testified that she was so distressed that she thought of taking her own life. A few days later she was told she was being transported to Cape Town. On the way, at Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, she was detained in a filthy police cell overnight in a leaking cell while it was raining. She spent the whole night crying.

'The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) will investigate the shooting as per standard protocol,' Gantana stated. Alleged extortion of teachers Teachers at Dalibhunga Senior Secondary School in Ngqeleni lodged a complaint on 26 July regarding a gang that was extorting money from them. 'Teachers at the school discovered a threatening note on the premises. The note, allegedly from an extortionist group, demands a monthly protection fee of R1 000 from each teacher,' confirmed Gantana. Provincial police commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso described the alleged crimes as 'an attack on our education system and community stability'. Police are still searching for additional suspects and are urging members of the community to assist authorities with information that could lead to arrests. 'We are treating this threat with the utmost urgency. The organised crime unit is utilising all available resources to identify those responsible,' stated Kupiso. Former Durban pastor's car window smashed in alleged road rage attack
A former pastor from Chatsworth, Durban, and his family are left traumatised after the side window of their vehicle was shattered in an alleged road rage incident along the N2 recently. According to Rising Sun, Ernest Manikam (71) was returning from a family funeral and driving along the N2 freeway with his family when they were involved in a horrific road rage incident that almost cost them their lives. Manikam explained: 'The drama unfolded when we were returning from the Stellawood Crematorium on the N2 southbound on July 3. We just laid our close family member to rest, and I had a car full of people chatting. I was travelling in the fast lane at a speed of around 100km/h when suddenly, a red Volkswagen Polo slowed down in front of me. I immediately hit the brakes, causing everyone in the vehicle to jerk forward. The driver continued going at a slow speed, so I moved to the centre lane to avoid him. He followed and blocked me. He continued doing this until we came to the Chatsworth off-ramp. 'There was a truck on the left side and he jammed us on the right. We were all in shock and feared what would happen next. The driver of the vehicle then got out of his car and came towards us swearing. We were not sure if he had a gun or a knife in his possession. My daughter screamed and told me to close the window. Luckily, I was able to do so. He tried to punch me on my face but ended up hitting the driver's side window, causing the glass to shatter. By God's grace, I managed to swerve the vehicle and made my way to the Bayview police station.' Manikam is unsure what triggered the attack. 'I don't understand why this occurred. The driver was an Indian male. As a pensioner, it is very unfair to me. The costs I incurred following this incident amount to R1 953. I am a pensioner, and this is not easy on me. He should be found and brought to task for this incident. My daughter recently had a stroke, and this has negatively impacted her health. Both my daughters and I needed medical attention due to this reckless behaviour. All passengers, including myself, are still traumatised. We battle to sleep at night. It was one of the scariest experiences of our lives. Road rage is real and we have just become victims of it,' he added. Manikam's daughter, Amelia Isaac (48), also commented. She said: 'To date, we have no clue as to why we had become the target of such abuse and trauma. It was only through the divine intervention of God that we are all safe and alive. My father is still shaken from the ordeal, but we pray that the perpetrator is identified and brought to book. My father is a well-known figure in community circles. He had preached in many churches across Durban. We appeal to law enforcement to deal with the matter decisively.' Image: File A Limpopo pastor who lured teenage girls, aged between 14 and 17, to his church under the guise of spiritual guidance has been sentenced to two life terms and an additional 45 years in prison for multiple rapes and sexual assault. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the Naphuno Magistrate's Court on July 31, 2025, found 39-year-old Confidence Monyela guilty of a string of crimes involving minor girls aged between 14 and 17, committed between 2016 and 2017 in the Maake policing area. "The rape incidents were committed while the accused was allegedly inviting the victims to come to his church in the evening for spiritual sermons. Upon their arrival at the premises, Confidence Monyela prayed for the victims and later raped them," Ledwaba Ledwaba added that Monyela used religious threats to silence the victims. "The minor girls were threatened not to tell anyone because the Holy Spirit would kill them if they did not comply with the instruction." He would then drive them home after the assaults. The abuse came to light in August 2017, when one of the victims confided in a social worker, who informed the girl's parents. A case was opened and Maake police registered five counts of rape. Monyela was later released on R15,000 bail but was taken back into custody on the day of sentencing. The court handed down the following sentences: Count 1: Life imprisonment for Rape Count 2: Life imprisonment for Rape Count 3: 10 years for Rape Count 4: 10 years for Rape Count 5: 10 years for Rape Count 6: 05 years for Sexual Assault The sentences for counts 3, 4, 5, and 6 will run concurrently with the life imprisonment imposed on the first two counts.
