Around 300 families were affected by a fire in Las Pinas City on Monday.
Eight people sustained injuries in two separate fire incidents in Las Piñas City and Cagayan de Oro on Monday.
In Mark Salazar's Monday report on 'Saksi,' 300 families were left homeless by the blaze in Barangay Almanza Uno, Las Piñas.
Strong winds fanned the fire causing it to reache a street in neighboring Parañaque City.
About 100 houses were destroyed or damaged by the fire.
A resident also lost P350,000 in cash that he had saved for three years and kept in his home to the fire.
Five persons were injured in the incident and were given medical treatment.
Firefighters faced difficulties in extinguishing the blaze due to quick spread of the fire among the houses built of light materials and there was only one water hydrant in the area.
Meanwhile in Cagayan de Oro, two people were injured in a fire that occurred at a residential neighborhood.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, 70 houses were damaged by the blaze, causing an estimated P4 million in damages.
Another fire at a school in Alimodian, Iloilo destroyed 14 classrooms.
The school's canteen, clinic and stage were also damaged. Several laptops and television sets were also consumed by the flames.
According to initial findings, an electric fan caused the fire.
The damage was estimated at P14 million.
The school administration said it will convert some of its facilities to classrooms.
In Cebu City, over 30 houses were damaged by a fire that lasted over one hour before it was declared under control.
According to the owner of the house where the fire started, he saw some children playing with a lighter.
The blaze easily spread as the houses were made with light materials.

Some Calumpit residents hop on boats amid neck-deep floods

Residents in some parts of Calumpit, Bulacan have to use boats on the streets amid the neck-deep floods brought by the inclement weather. In JP Soriano's report in 'Saksi' on Thursday, the people of Barangay San Miguel are already used to floods, but the effects of the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, and the series of typhoons hitting the country have worsened their situation. 'Wala po kaming lilipatan, sir,' said George, who is a longtime resident of the barangay. (We don't know where to move.) Likewise, Barangay Meysulao is also submerged in neck-deep waters. But there are some who cannot afford to get out of their flooded homes. For instance, Elmer chose to stay in his house as he cannot leave his pet dog. However, there are caged dogs that seem to have been left behind by their owners, according to the report. Meanwhile, residents who have to evacuate need to ride on boats to go to the evacuation center. 'Eh sabi po magagawan daw ng paraan. Eh hanggang ngayon hindi pa rin nagagawan ng paraan,' said Girlie, a resident of Barangay Meysulao. 'Marami ng beses ipinangako 'yan. Wala pong natutupad.' (They keep on telling us that it will be resolved, but nothing has happened until promised us several times, but none of it came true.) For his part, the barangay is hoping that at least the level of the floodwaters will be lessened. 'Hindi man totally matanggal ang tubig, kahit mabawasan lang, okay na kami doon,' said Barangay Chairperson Roland Ramos. (Even if the water can't be completely subsided, at least it can be reduced, we're okay with that.) Calumpit Mayor Lem Faustino was criticized after she posted on social media encouraging her constituents to take a selfie in the floods in a chance for raffle entry for ayuda or aid. But Faustino explained that the local government took care of the residents. 'Bago po kami mag-'e-ayuda' ay una naming pinuntahan ang mga [evacuation] centers namin. So, mayroon po kaming 43,000 families na affected… Inaabot po nang personal ang aming relief goods sa aming mga binahang kababayan,' she said. (Before the "e-ayuda", we first went to our [evacuation] centers. So, we have 43,000 families affected… We are personally delivering our relief goods to our flooded constituents.) 'Ito pong 'e-ayuda' na ito, siyempre po sa Facebook po namin pinost para lang maiwasan 'yung scammers po,' the mayor added. (We posted the "e-ayuda" on Facebook to avoid scammers.) However, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said that providing assistance during calamities 'must be based on empathy, compassion, and equity.' 'Making it a game of chance, making it a competition removes all three components from the propriety of helping people during times of crisis,' he added. The municipality of Calumpit is currently under the state of calamity. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BAP, GMA Integrated News

Evacuation center floods in Dagupan, Pangasinan amid heavy rain

A school building serving as an evacuation center in Dagupan, Pangasinan became flooded following the continuous downpour brought by the Southwest Monsoon and consecutive tropical cyclones. According to Jasmin Gabriel-Galban's Thursday report on '24 Oras,' evacuees of the flooded building were moved to the second floor, while others stayed on the stage of the school's covered court. A force evacuation was implemented in Barangay Lubo, Dagupan amid flooding caused by several day's worth of heavy rain. Over 200 families, or over 500 individuals, are in evacuation centers as floods also hit Calasiao, Pangasinan. The Calasiao Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said 24 barangays were flooded as of Wednesday, of which 18 reached above head-level flood. Meanwhile, the Calasiao local government unit (LGU) said that rescue operations are ongoing. The LGU also offered libreng sakay or free ride services to affected residents. In the midst of the harsh weather, residents do what they could to help one another. One man tied a rope for others to hold onto while braving the flood while a group of young people cooked arroz caldo (chicken porridge) and distributed the hot food to hungry evacuees. Authorities remain on alert for the effects of the inclement weather brought by the Habagat and Typhoon Emong. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos on weather systems hitting PH: This is the new normal

''This is the new normal.'' President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. made this assessment as various weather systems hit the Philippines in succession this week, resulting in torrential rains and floods across most parts of the country. During a situational briefing with key government officials on Thursday, Marcos pointed out that tropical cyclones are inevitable. ''This is not an extraordinary situation anymore. Do not think of it as a special situation, this is... I hate to use the overused phrase but this is the new normal. Ganito na talaga ang buhay natin kahit ano pa ang gawin natin,'' Marcos said. Marcos also stressed that the public must already plan to adapt as tropical cyclones could not be prevented. ''We just have to change the way we think. Everything was different from what it was in the last 40 years,'' Marcos said. A total of 40 cities and municipalities have declared a state of calamity as of Thursday morning due to the impact of Tropical Cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong as well as the enhanced Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. In its 6 a.m. report on Thursday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said these areas include the entire province of Cavite covering 23 cities and municipalities, as well as 17 areas in other provinces and Metro Manila. A total of 2,733,646 people or 765,869 families have been affected by the bad weather in all regions except Eastern Visayas. Floods, landslides, collapsed structures, and tornadoes were reported in the affected areas. — RF, GMA Integrated News
