A Minute With: Musician and writer Tim Minchin looks back
After gaining critical success as a comedian in 2005, the British-Australian Minchin went on to write the music and lyrics for hit West End musical "Matilda the Musical" and signed with record label BMG in 2020.
In an interview with Reuters, Minchin reflects on his new record as well as his songwriting and views on social media.
Below are excerpts edited for length and brevity.
Q: Your album is out, how does that make you feel?
"I feel really reflective. But also I've reached a point in my career ... where I just feel like ... here's my offer ... and because I don't read social media anymore and I won't read reviews, it's just out in the world... And hopefully people listen to it."
Q: How would you describe your music?
"I think the way I use words is slightly different from a lot of singer/songwriters... Most pop songs, they're broad, you can hear in them what you want ... whereas mine are like - ''oh no, this is what the song's about'."
Q: Is there a difference writing music for yourself or characters such as Matilda?
"I always feel like in a way, I'm placing myself in someone else's shoes... some of my songs are really personal and they're really about me. But it is a craft - songwriting - and that can mean placing yourself in a particular emotional state."
Q: What makes you feel inspired at the moment?
"My job is to put good ideas into the world and beautiful stories and make people feel things... That job of spreading empathy and joy and laughter and emotion and if I can do that and feel optimistic ... then I'm one person not being a cynic."
Q: Do you wish you had released this album in your twenties?
"The greatest thing that ever happened to me is not getting success (then) ... it's terrible for people... I'm very happy that I'm just gently putting these songs out into the world (now)."

Alleged ‘con queen of Hollywood' loses High Court challenge against extradition
A man who was nicknamed the 'con queen of Hollywood ' after allegedly impersonating movie executives and defrauding hundreds of people has lost a court bid to challenge his extradition to the United States. Hargobind Tahilramani is accused of conning over 300 victims – including actors, screenwriters and photographers – over the course of seven years. Tahilramani would allegedly convince entertainment industry professionals to travel to Indonesia at their own expense for non-existent projects. They were then allegedly charged exorbitant expenses which were never repaid. The 45-year-old is wanted in the US to face eight charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud and five counts of aggravated identity theft. He faced extradition proceedings in 2022, and in June 2023 Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring approved Tahilramani's extradition, which was later ordered by the Home Secretary. Tahilramani brought an appeal to the High Court in London in April. Judge Mr Justice Sweeting dismissed the bid in a decision on Tuesday. Tahilramani's lawyers argued that the chief magistrate had been wrong to allow his extradition, considering his mental health and risk of suicide. They also said the judge was wrong to find that extraditing Tahilramani would be compatible with his human rights given the risk of inhuman and degrading treatment, including sexual assault. Mr Justice Sweeting said in a 28-page ruling: 'The applicant's case is that he would almost certainly face confinement alone in protective custody due to his sexual orientation and effeminate demeanour.' The judge found that any differences in treatment Tahilramani could face in prison would be aimed at preventing inter-prisoner violence, and that the previous judge was right to conclude that it 'would not be oppressive due to his physical or mental condition to extradite him'. Mr Justice Sweeting concluded: 'The differential treatment claimed by the applicant, even if established, would relate to protective measures taken due to vulnerability, and not as a result of a discriminatory intent or practice based on his sexual orientation. 'Such measures … are not inhuman or degrading and serve a legitimate purpose within the US penal system.'

Games Workshop to open new stores in US, Europe and Asia this year after Space Marine 2 success
Games Workshop is plotting dozens of new store launches around the world after the Warhammer creator's profits were supercharged by the launch of 'Space Marine 2'. The group cheered a record 2025 on Tuesday with pre-tax profits soaring by nearly 30 per cent to £262.8million, beating guidance of £255million, as sales jumped 19.6 per cent on a constant currency basis to £628.7million. It came as licencing revenues jumped from £31million to £52.5million after Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, a third-person shooter video game launched last year, performed 'well above' the group's expectations with seven million copies sold. Games Workshop is best known in the UK for its tabletop miniatures and high street stores across the country. But it has increasingly moved into video games and books, and a film and TV deal with Amazon that was finalised last December and is expected to be fronted by Superman actor Henry Cavill. Games Workshop cautioned that the next 12 months would suffer tough comparisons owing to the success of Space Marine 2, while the group thinks tariffs could impact profit before tax by around £12million. It said tariffs would be 'dealt with in our normal pragmatic way'. Nevertheless, Games Workshop outlined plans to boost manufacturing capacity and said it aims to open around 35 new stores globally over the next year. These are set to be focused on North American, continental Europe and Asia. The Nottingham-based firm's chief executive Kevin Rountree, CEO of Games Workshop said: 'After a record year, we remain focused on delivering our operational plans and working tirelessly to overcome any significant obstacles that get in the way. 'We will continue to give ourselves the freedom to make some mistakes, constantly working on improvements in product quality and manufacturing innovation. 'Despite our recent successes we will never take our hobbyists' support for granted.' Games Workshop declared and paid dividends worth 520p per share last year, up from 420p in the previous 12 months. Games Workshop shares were up 5.6 per cent to 16,110p approaching midday, having more than doubled over the last three years.
