FifPro release scathing statement against Fifa president Gianni Infantino: ‘The man who thinks he's god'
The inaugural rendition of the revamped tournament has come under heavy criticism for the increased strain it's put on players, further packing an already crammed football calendar. The heat of midday fixtures in the United States has been an additional player welfare issue in the United States.
However, The Independent understands FifPro were not invited to a meeting that Infantino staged on Saturday over 'key issues concerning player health' ahead of the Club World Cup final.
The player union has responded with a scathing statement that lambasts Infantino for 'silencing' the game's key protagonists.
'While the recent Club World Cup generated enthusiasm among numerous fans and allowed some of the world's leading figures to be seen in a single tournament, FifPro cannot fail to point out, with absolute clarity, that this competition hides a dangerous disconnect with the true reality experienced by most footballers around the world,' the statement read.
'What was presented as a global celebration of football was nothing more than a fiction created by Fifa, promoted by its president, without dialogue, sensitivity, and respect for those who sustain the game with their daily efforts. A grandiloquent staging inevitably reminiscent of the 'bread and circuses' of Nero's Rome, entertainment for the masses while behind the scenes inequality, precariousness, and the lack of protection for the true protagonists deepen.'
FifPro has called for Fifa to learn from the shortcomings of the Club World Cup ahead of next year's World Cup, which will also be held in the United States alongside Canada and Mexico.
'The tournament was held under unacceptable conditions, with matches played at extremely hot times and in temperatures that put the players' physical safety at risk,' the statement adds. 'This situation must not only be denounced, but must be firmly warned against. What happened cannot be repeated under any circumstances at next year's Fifa World Cup.
'At FifPro, we have been warning about the overcrowded schedule, the lack of physical and mental rest for players, and the lack of dialogue from Fifa. This way of organizing tournaments, without listening to the Federation that represents the world's professional footballers' associations, is unilateral, authoritarian, and based solely on a logic of economic profitability, not human sustainability. We cannot continue to play with the health of players to fuel a marketing machine.
'There is no spectacle possible if the voices of the protagonists are silenced. At FifPro, we reiterate our commitment: we will firmly defend every right, denounce every abuse, and demand that Fifa adopt a truly inclusive policy that respects the integrity of footballers and places them at the center of every decision.'

'Normal to have to build your confidence'
Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot says pre-season wins can "build confidence" for upcoming Red Devils came out 2-1 winners over West Ham United in their opening game of the Premier League Summer Series in the United States on Saturday, with captain Bruno Fernandes netting preparation for the new campaign is the first time boss Ruben Amorim has had the chance to have a pre-season with the team after arriving in after the game at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Dalot said: "It's been good [having pre-season with Amorim]. We train a lot, we train hard. Today you saw also what kind of intensity we can bring."I think we're still at the beginning. We have a lot more potential to show in that aspect, but I think for today it was good intensity and a good performance."Last season was not good enough, we know that, and now we have to find a way to improve. I think we've made some good signings already. You saw already Matheus [Cunha], he can bring a lot to the team."I like the mentality of us today, high pressing, a lot of intensity."After just 11 league wins and a 15th-place finish, 2024-25 was regarded as the club's worst campaign since the 1973-74 relegation season and Amorim and his players will know they need to do better this time around."After a season like that, it's normal to have to build your confidence," Dalot added. "That's why I think a win like today is really important. I think with winning, you become more confident. You start to believe more in what you're doing."[This win] was a good example of what we can show, and hopefully with this the group becomes even better."

Ian Wright speaks out England's change for Euro 2025 final against Spain
Ian Wright says he is 'really pleased' to see Jess Carter recalled to England's starting XI for the side's Women's Euro 2025 final clash with Spain. England head coach Sarina Wiegman has made one change to the team that came from behind to beat Italy in the semi-finals, with Esme Morgan dropping down to the substitutes bench. Prior to the win over Italy, Carter revealed that she had been subjected to racist abuse throughout the Lionesses campaign and would therefore be 'taking a step back' from social media. The rest of Wiegman's England squad have rallied around the 27-year-old defender in the intervening days, while FIFA president Gianni Infantino came out condemning the vile online messages. Though Carter had started all four of the holders' games in Switzerland heading into defeat of Italy, there was some uncertainty over the centre-back's inclusion considering Morgan's impressive performance last time out in Geneva. Spain, the reigning world champions, have made two changes to their team that got the better of Germany in the semi-finals, with Laia Aleixandri and Athenea del Castillo coming in for Claudia Pina and Maria Méndez respectively. On Carter's return at the heart of Wiegman's defence, ex-England striker Wright said on ITV:'I'm really pleased, to a certain extent, to see Jess Carter in there. 'That says to me she's got a lot of faith in her. 'She's playing in the same position where she had a little bit of a torrid time, so for her to come in, playing in that position, she's putting a lot of faith in her. 'Hopefully Jess can repay that faith.' ITV colleague Karen Carney, meanwhile, called on Carter's team-mates to 'help out' when playing it out from the back at Basel's St Jakob-Park. 'I think what we've seen from Sarina is that she's always picked her players and I think Esme Morgan was sensational,' the former Arsenal, Chelsea and England winger said. More Trending 'But obviously with Sarina, she likes to play with her tried and trusted and in Jess, she believes in that. 'What I will see is we have to move the ball quicker. Teams have, perhaps, tracked Jess a little bit so Alex Greenwood has got to help her out, our other defenders and midfielders. 'They have certainly got to help her out, particularly when we play out from the back today.' More to follow. MORE: Who is commentating on England's Euro 2025 final vs Spain? New Liverpool signing's FaceTime with team-mate before agreeing transfer revealed
Ryan Gravenberch is set to link up with Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield this season, and the Liverpool midfielder has lifted the lid on giving the full-back advice on what to expect from Arne Slot's set-up Ryan Gravenberch has explained that he shared a FaceTime call with Jeremie Frimpong before the full-back signed for Liverpool. The pair of Dutchmen have already shared the pitch on occasion for their nation, and will now link up at Anfield with hopes of defending the Reds' Premier League title in 2025/26. But before Frimpong committed his future to Liverpool, he shared a chat about the club with Gravenberch. Speaking about Arne Slot's summer signings thus far, the midfielder said: "Jeremie, obviously I know him for a long time already so I have a really good relationship with him. So I'm really happy that he is here." He added: "We had a little FaceTime [before he signed]. We spoke to each other and he asked me about Liverpool and everything and I gave him really good advice! I am happy that he is here." Gravenberch joined Liverpool in the summer of 2023 in a £34.2million deal with Bayern Munich and quickly became part and parcel of Jurgen Klopp's plans - making 26 appearances in his maiden season. Last season under Slot proved even more fruitful for the 23-year-old, who missed just one Premier League clash for Liverpool, and was instrumental to the club winning the title. Frimpong, meanwhile, was recruited by Slot at the turn of this summer's transfer window, with the manager eager to find a suitable replacement for a departing Trent Alexander-Arnold who joined Real Madrid ahead of the Club World Cup. As a result, his £29.5m release clause with Bayer Leverkusen was activated, and he has enjoyed his time on Merseyside since. However, Frimpong isn't the only high-profile signing that Liverpool have acquired this summer. The club also struck a £40m deal with Bournemouth for left-back Milos Kerkez, before securing the services of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a £79m move. Slot's marquee signing, however, comes in the form of Florian Wirtz, smashing the club's record transfer fee in bringing the attacking-midfielder on board from Leverkusen for a staggering £116m last month. And Gravenberch showered the former Bundesliga star with praise as he joined the ranks of Anfield. He said: "I think everyone knows Florian and also here in training he is a really good player: technical, really good vision, so I am really happy that he is here and I can't wait for the season to start also to play with him." It comes Liverpool are currently amid a pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan as they ready themselves for their 2025/26 Premier League campaign. The Reds kicked off their preparations for the fresh season with a 3-1 win over Preston North End at Deepdale on July 13, before securing a 5-0 win over Stoke City at the AXA Training Centre a week later. A 4-2 loss to AC Milan then ensued at the Kai Tak Stadium, with Liverpool's next fixture coming in the form of a friendly with Yokohama FC at the Nissan Stadium come Wednesday. Upon their return, Liverpool will play host to Athletic Club at Anfield come August 4, and face Crystal Palace at Wembley for the Community Shield six days later. Their seasonal opener with Bournemouth then takes place come August 15 on home soil. Outlining his goals for the new season, Gravenberch said: "To make it a really nice season again. My aims are like last season, I just want to be there for the team and to show myself again and be as consistent as I can."
