Detroit People's Food Co-op celebrates 1 year of bringing fresh food to the community

Yahoo16-05-2025
Buying lunch at the Detroit People's Food Co-op one recent afternoon, Detroiter Idris Nia, 74, got emotional thinking about shopping at a store owned by the people, open for the people.
'We have lived through a nutritional food desert in this area, and would have to go to Dearborn for our groceries," Nia reflected, after grabbing a few vegan items from the hot bar. The co-op stands like a lone, confident soldier, adorned in chartreuse green and blaze orange paint with complementary green, yellow and orange lettering. On Woodward Avenue in the North End, the co-op is near the Fisher Building, Piety Hill and the Boston-Edison Historic District.
The term 'food desert' doesn't sit well with co-op general manager Akil Talley ― a desert, he said, is naturally occurring: 'We like to call it 'food apartheid,' because a lot of it was intentional." Observing the lack of access to fresh groceries near this location, one might agree. That's a notion that drives Talley's work ethic to do better for the residents around him. Talley also helps facilitate bringing in produce and products from locally sourced farms and creators, including D-Town Farms and hair products from F.I.G Tree Dist. and Lorraine's Premium BBQ Sauce, to name a few.
On the co-op's one-year anniversary last week, Boston-Edison resident Michelle May, 62, had produce and fresh flowers in her cart. May, also a lifetime member, said: 'It's been amazing to watch this go from idea, to this,' as she opened her arms and did a nearly 360-degree swivel 'It's so Detroit … it's community Black-led in a majority Black city.'
A lifetime membership to the co-op is $200. Members must be over 21 and residents of Michigan. Members receive certain discounts, a chance to have input on what the store carries and the ability to vote to elect the co-op's board of directors. According to the ticker posted prominently on the wall near the checkout lanes, the co-op is up to 4,279 members and they welcome an increase in that number.
As 26-year-old Detroiter Tyzhane Taylor and her 3-year-old shopped, she said, "It feels like family here."

Tesla Stock (TSLA) Faces New Trauma as European Sales Keep Sliding

Shares in EV maker Tesla (TSLA) reversed today as it suffered another European sales slowdown. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. According to new official industry data, sales of the company's vehicles declined in France and Denmark for the seventh consecutive month. Nordic Nightmare Tesla, led by chief executive Elon Musk, registered 1,307 new cars in France last month, representing a 27% drop compared to July 2024. In Denmark, the decline was even steeper, with sales falling 52% to 336 vehicles. Model Y registrations specifically decreased by 49% in Denmark during July. Tesla's struggles extended to Sweden as well, where new car registrations plummeted 85.8% year-on-year to just 163 vehicles in July, based on data released today by Mobility Sweden. The figures were down 83.3% from June's total of 976 vehicles. In July, the Elon Musk-led company registered 117 Model Y units, 44 Model 3s, and one unit each of the Model S and Model X. This is despite Tesla currently offering a 40,000 SEK trade-in bonus for customers purchasing a Model Y or Model 3 from July 18 to August 15, and taking delivery by August 30. As can be seen below, the U.S. and China dominate Tesla sales, but Europe remains an important market. Tesla Ecosystem The news today builds on figures last week from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), which revealed that Tesla sold 70,655 vehicles in the European Union in the first half of 2025. That was down 43.7% year over year. It continues a challenging year for Tesla whose sales worldwide have been hit by increased competition from rivals such as China's BYD (BYDDY), concerns over its design appeal, threats to EV subsidies in the U.S. and a hit to its brand reputation by Musk's on and very much off involvement with President Trump's administration. Not everyone is a Tesla doubter, however, with some analysts pointing to the overall strength of the Tesla ecosystem as a reason for optimism in the stock. Indeed, some see it as heading towards a staggering $10 trillion market value based on its innovations in human-like robots, self-driving and energy storage. Is TSLA a Good Stock to Buy Now? On TipRanks, TSLA has a Hold consensus based on 14 Buy, 15 Hold and 8 Sell ratings. Its highest price target is $500. TSLA stock's consensus price target is $310.84, implying a 0.83% upside.

Hyundai Offers Killer 2026 Santa Fe Lease Deal for August

The 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe looks like the South Korean brand took a 2016 Land Rover LR4 and created its own, fresher, and more attractive version. Fully redesigned last year, the Santa Fe departs completely from its sleeker predecessor in favor of a more upright and boxy look. With sharply defined fender arches, distinctive H-pattern headlights and taillights reminiscent of Minecraft blocks, an extra-wide tailgate, and a confidently boxy silhouette, the Santa Fe delivered one of the boldest and most original designs in recent memory. It's now the brand's second best-selling SUV (behind the Tucson) and third best-selling vehicle (the Elantra takes the #2 spot). The competition in the midsize SUV segment is fierce, and the Santa Fe's bold design and airy cabin stand out in a field that's packed with competitors like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Kia Sorento, and Mazda CX-5. The fifth-generation Santa Fe is easily the boxiest in the set, and it's the only one to offer a standard third row. It has space galore, brilliant storage, cutting-edge in-car technology, and some of the best standard features in the industry. The August lease deal makes it even more appealing. August is a great time to get into a new Santa Fe SE with a lease deal at $349 per month for 36 months. $3,999 due at least signing, which includes the first $349 monthly payment and $3,650 capitalized cost reduction. No security deposit is required. Does not include registration, tax, title, license, processing or documentation fees, insurance, or any emission charge. The mileage limit is 10,000 miles per year. A $400 disposition fee is due at the end of the lease (except for CO, IN, IA, KS, ME, OK, SC, WI, WV, & WY, where the disposition fee is subject to the limitations of state laws). Not all lessees will qualify, and higher rates may apply for those with lower credit scores. Lease offer ends September 2, 2025. Learn more here. The Hyundai Santa Fe SE is the base model in the lineup. It features a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. It comes in front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive, using an 8-speed automatic transmission. EPA estimates are 20 city, 29 highway, and 24 combined with front wheel drive. All-wheel drive drops a smidge with 20, 28, and 23, respectively. Standard features on the SE include 18-inch alloy wheels, 235/60 R18 all-season tires, LED headlights and DRLs, LED taillights, automatic headlights, heated side mirrors, a handsfree smart liftgate with auto open, proximity key, power lumbar driver's seat, power folding rear seats, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with OTA updates, a 4.2-inch driver information display, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a proximity key with push button start. The robust set of standard safety features includes blind spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic avoidance assist, parking distance warning, forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian/cyclist/junction turning detection, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, safe exit assist, and lane following assist. The Santa Fe also earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2025, a remarkable achievement given the rigorous testing and high standards required to earn the title. The Santa Fe's total passenger volume is 166.6 cubic feet, and the second row provides a truly spacious 42.3 inches of second-row legroom, while the third row offers 30 inches of legroom. The cargo area provides 14.6 cubic feet behind row three, 40.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row, and 79.6 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded flat. The 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe is one of the most original SUVs on the road today. It offers tremendous versatility with its lounge-like rear section and wide liftgate. Great standard features on the base model, such as a wireless device charger, adaptive cruise control, and a 12.3-inch color touchscreen, are great examples of how much value Hyundai bakes into its vehicles. With three rows of roomy seating, the Santa Fe can accommodate big families without any trouble, and it does so in style. The very affordable monthly lease payment makes it even more attractive in the month of August. Before signing the lease agreement, be aware of the costs due at signing, including taxes and registration fees, etc. Read the lease agreement carefully and inquire about potential additional costs at the dealership. *Disclaimer: This article is provided for informational purposes only. Why Black entrepreneurs flock to Martha's Vineyard every August

Martha's Vineyard has long been a summer vacation destination for Black families, but August in the Massachusetts beach community is becoming an important hub for Black entrepreneurs, investors and financial firms, too. "I would say the magic of it is really about introducing your network to someone else's network," said Calvin Butts, founder of East Chop Capital, a private equity firm named after a neighborhood on the island. "We found great success raising capital there, we've had our portfolio companies speak as well, we've done very, very well with deal flow." A wide range of companies including Disney, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, McDonald's, Google, Ford, Mckinsey and CNBC parent company Comcast are hosting or sponsoring business-focused events on the Vineyard this month. The Black Economic Alliance is hosting an event called "The Gathering," bringing together corporate leaders to discuss ways to help increase the opportunities for Black employees and companies. "The Vineyard is a spot to capture an audience who wants to have an intellectual and financial conversation about how to uplift Black culture," said Melissa Bradley, general partner of the BEA Venture Fund. Martha's Vineyard became a popular vacation destination for Black families over a century ago with the opening of the first hotel that allowed Black visitors, Shearer Cottage, in 1912. Since then, Black families have bought homes and created a community centered around the town of Oak Bluffs and Inkwell Beach, a name that is a nod to the segregation on the island in the past. This year, clothing brand Ralph Lauren released its Oak Bluffs collection looking to recognize and capitalize on the history and prestige of the island that hosts visitors like Michelle and Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Spike Lee. Eden Bridgeman Sklenar, CEO of Ebony Magazine, is hosting an event with the founders of Black-owned spirit brand Uncle Nearest and said she sees the vineyard as a way to bring the history and the future of the magazine to life for its target audience. "For EBONY, being present on the Vineyard in August is both strategic and personal," Sklenar said in a statement. "It's an opportunity to connect with a powerful cross-section of our community, deepen meaningful relationships, and position the brand not just as a cultural icon, but as a modern business driving impact, visibility, and growth." Donae Burston, founder of La Fête du Rosé, said he also sees tapping into the culture of the Martha's Vineyard community as an organic way to grow sales among a consumer base that aligns with his marketing as a luxury brand. "For us it would mean so much to have the acceptance of people in Martha's Vineyard," said Burston. "Being able to go to Martha's Vineyard and focus on [high-net-worth] individuals from all over the world who appreciate wine — It's visibility, it's helping them become evangelists to go back home and spread the gospel." For four generations, Erin Goldson and her family have spent summers in Martha's Vineyard. This year she is launching a new event called the "Vineyard Icon Awards," sponsored by Diageo and Estee Lauder. The honorees are business and political leaders who are helping to shape August on Martha's Vineyard as a place where culture and commerce meet. "Over the last five or so years, a lot of companies are realizing that there is a wealth of successful, accomplished, driven Black professionals, who decide to come to the vineyard in August," Goldson said. "You can come to the vineyard for rest and relaxation," she said. "But every year here there is also a growing legacy, where Black ambition and aspiration are celebrated in a very unique way."
